iPhone Pre-Release Speculation/Discussion
iPhone Megathread 1.0
Iphone all VERSION & 1.1.3 upgrade GUIDE
Here's the summary for u guys who wanna update V1.02, V1.1.1, V1.1.2 to Official 1.1.3 from iTunes itself. This is for OTB 1.02, 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 iPhones. So many questions about this in iPhone thread n my answer keeps getting buried so this is for u guys to refer back. This is by far the easiest n safest way to get to 1.1.3. All this will take only about 10 minutes. Time taken will depend on how fast your internet connection is, while downloading V1.1.3 update in iTunes.
1. Plug in the 1.02 or 1.1.1 iPhone to iTunes.
2. Click on upgrade to 1.1.3. The phone will be upgraded to Official 1.1.3 from iTunes after this.
3. Now just use the ZiPhone method to Activate n Jailbreak. U can see complete pictorial guide on ZiPhone method here.
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=656
Your phone will be Activated n Jailbroken after this. It will even install the Installer App for u. ZiPhone will take just 45 seconds to
Activate n Jailbreak ur phone.
4. Now u need to use AnySIM 1.3 to unlock ur sim card. U can see the complete pictorial guide on AnySIM 1.3 method here.
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=635
5. Remember to reboot the phone after everything is done. U must turn it off n do a reboot. Reason is, in my case, I lost all ringtones after I did the succesful activation, jailbreak n unlock. After I did a proper reboot everything works perfectly.
6. Congratulations! U now have a proper V1.1.3 from Apple iTunes itself. Enjoy!

Stupid iPhone Tricks
* Scroll up to the Address bar with one touch:
When browsing a long web page it can take a while to flick all the way again back to the top if it, instead of flicking just touch the very top bar (the one with the AT&T text and time on there) and it'll shoot you right back to the address bar.
* Hard Reboot
If for some reason your iPhone freezes up and holding the sleep/wake button doesn't fix it you can perform a 'hard reboot'. To do this just hold the sleep/wake button and the home button for 10 seconds then all should be back to normal again.
* Force-Close a Program
If an application freezes up on you during use, you can press and hold the home button for about 6 seconds to force the app to quit.
* Way too Much Information
* Making Punctuation Easier
* Using a custom audio file for your Voicemail.
See this article on iPhone Alley for details!
The Awful iPhone FAQ
Please note - most of this information is for the USA - if someone wants to share more UK/France/Germany info, I'll add it.
Where can I get one?
* CORPORATE AT&T Stores -- store locater here: http://www.wireless.att.com/find-a-store
* Apple Stores
* Apple.com
What kind of plan will I be able to use with the iPhone?
Go look here.
Does it require a contract?
Yes, 2 year Contract needed.
Is there any way to get Insurance on the phone?
AppleCare is available, but it does not cover accidental damage. Your best bet is to add the phone into your homeowners/renter's insurance policy.
How will the sign up process for AT&T work at Apple Stores or Apple.com?
You buy the phone, then activate it through iTunes. Number transfer is also handled through iTunes.
What about the UK?
The iPhone will be released in the UK on the 9th November. The phones will be sold in O2 stores, Carphone Warehouse stores, Apple retail stores, and online at the iPod UK Store. It will cost £269 including VAT. The iPhone will be on the O2 network. It will be on an 18-month contract on a tariff of £35 (200 minutes and 200 texts), £45 (600 minutes and 500 texts) and £55 per month (1200 minutes and 500 texts), all of which will include unlimited mobile data usage.
Can I pick my own sounds for Mail, SMS, alarms, etc?
No, and it's kind of f***ing annoying. Well, actually you can, but it requires a hack and use of FTP and SSH. See the hacks section in the posts below.
Can we use the keyboard in landscape mode?
Yes.
Can I tether it to my laptop and use it via a modem? Either by Bluetooth or USB?
No.
Why not?!
Because.
Why no 3G / HSDPA support?
Lots of reasons. Apple's official reason is that AT&T's HSDPA doesn't have enough penetration (read: coverage) to be worthwhile yet. Others have suggested that 3G really uses a TON of battery life, which is a valid point.
Either way, the iPhone doesn't have it. Future revisions probably will. If 3G is a deal killer for you, fine, just don't shit up the thread about it.
Is the SIM removable or not?
Yes. And prior to 1.1.1, you could use the phone on T-Mobile.
What kind of processor does iPhone have?
Engadget reports that it has a 620mhz ARM processor.
Can I use my iHome Speakers / In-Car Adapter / Dock-Enabled iSqueegee with iPhone?
It may work - it will probably offer to switch into Airplane mode to reduce interference. (This means no Wifi, no EDGE, no phone calls!)
How come my photos are 480x640 when I email them from the phone? I thought this thing had a 2MP camera?!
It does - but the mail app on the iPhone resizes them for easier mail-sending on the fly. If you need full res copies, use iPhoto when you sync, or for Windows guys, when you dock iPhone it should show up as a drive - and you can pull your photos off with Windows Explorer. So far, there is no way to turn the auto-resize off.
Why can't I use MMS? This blows!
MMS is not supported on iPhone.
My Gmail account downloads every message I've sent back into my iPhone Inbox? WTF?
In your Advanced options for your Gmail account, disable Recent mode.
Do I need a screen protector for my iPhone?
According to this video of PC Magazine trying like heck to damage it, probably not.
I have a 64-bit version of Windows. Why doesn't iPhone work with it for syncing and activation?
According to Apple's Minimum System Requirements page: "64-bit editions of Windows are not supported"
My WiFi says it's connecting, but it won't work!
How do I stop iPhoto from launching every time my iPhone is docked?
So is there a way to downgrade from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2?
http://iphone.fiveforty.net/wiki/index.php..._1.1.1_to_1.0.2
Also is there a way to put custom ringtones on 1.1.2 yet?
Yes. You can create ringtones in Garageband, and add them to iTunes.
Is there actually information in this thread?
Well, at least for the first 8 pages, it's basically a wankfest of people b****ing at each other. Hopefully there'll really be something useful someday.
How do I update / rejailbreak my 1.1.1 phone?
Two ways:
1) Here is a guide that is as simple as possible, with a picture for every step:

2)
See this post: Me in Reverse Says How!
