Lets say that the manufacturer's guide is a little outdated. There has never been a rule of thumb on what pressures to run. It depends on the tyre manufacturer, vehicle weight, driving style.

The only thing you need to look out for is the crowning of the tyres, aka, faster wear at the middle. However, most people suffer from under-inflation more than over-inflation. Keep checking your tyres. I'm running mine at 40 front and 38 rear, as per my vehicle weight distribution of 55% front and 45% rear. So far no problem.
