ROME: Ronaldo ruptured a tendon in his right knee during AC Milan's 1-1 draw at home to Livorno on Wednesday and faces nine months on the sidelines, according to Gazetta dello Sport.
AC Milan confirmed the extent of Ronaldo's injury on their website, which he suffered just minutes after entering the fray as a second-half substitute and was taken to hospital.

Gazetta claimed the former three-time world player of the year's career could be over as well.

"It's an injury that could end the career of 'Il Fenomeno'," it said on its website.

"The recovery time is dramatic: from nine months to a year."
Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti refused to call time on Ronaldo's career, though.

"We're all very sorry and worried about what happened to Ronaldo, I don't want to say it's the end of his career because only time can decide whether it is or not," he said.

Ronaldo was taken to hospital from where Milan's Brazilian scout Leonardo, said the striker had all but confirmed those worst fears.

"Ronaldo said it was exactly the same thing as last time," said Leonardo, referring to the time when Ronaldo ruptured the tendon in his right knee in November 1999.

Ronaldo underwent an X-ray at hospital and Milan's club doctor Jean-Pierre Messerman later confirmed he had indeed suffered the same injury that inflicted his right knee eight years ago.

Another doctor, Walter Pascale, however, did have some good news for Ronaldo.

"Surgical techniques to repair this kind of injury have improved a lot over the last eight years," he said.

Ronaldo went under the knife in Paris yesterday where he also underwent surgery in 1999.

He fell awkwardly just three minutes after replacing Alberto Gilardino in the second half on Wednesday.

He was challenging for a ball in the air with Jose Vidigal, although the move resulted in a penalty to Milan which Andrea Pirlo converted to level the scores.

"I heard a horrible sound, like a bang, it was a strange sound," said Livorno goalkeeper Marco Amelia, who was close by when Ronaldo fell to the ground.

The last time Ronaldo suffered the same injury he managed to make his comeback in April 2000 but lasted only seven minutes before re-injuring his knee.

It was 20 months before he made a proper comeback for the 2002 World Cup, during which he finished as top scorer as he guided Brazil to a record fifth triumph.

However Ronaldo is now 31 and his contract at Milan runs out at the end of the season. - AFP

it's more like el' paracetamol now..... kinda sad it has to end this way.
no disrespect to him for he is among one of the biggest name from the samba country but
imo, once he gained the excess baggage, his career is oficially over!
his fragile knee no longer can handle the excess weight.

inter milan nurtured his injury until he fully recover and all he did in return was signing with real madrid!
and now back with the san siro's neighbour again.

He was probably the most feared striker in his prime years in Inter and Real Madrid. He's got some really sublime footwork and skills and his finishing is second to none back then. I'd say he epitomised the samba style of football that we used to see last time.

And then fame kinda gotten into him. He started dating supermodels and got into controversials over many matters. And then h got injured and came back strongly to single handedly win the World Cup for Brazil. He moved to Real and continue to do real well. If you check out his stats during his stay in Real, its really quiet an amazing strike rate. Despite being somewhat overweight, he did amazingly well.

Personally i think he will come back when he recovers from injury. I think Pires had a similar injury and came back quite strongly with Arsenal and he was almost the same as as Ronaldo now. Michael Owen too had a similar injury and he's back for Newcastle. So did Van Nistelrooy. But of coz age was a factor in both RVN and Owen case. You have it young, you're always gonna recover faster. As for Ronaldo, i think he'll be back but he probably won't be the same Ronaldo as everyone feared 8-10 years back. One thing for sure, at this age your recovery rate is slower and there's always the physchological point of view. He's probably gonna be extra careful when he returns and that will take a toll in his performance.

He was better than any other modern day striker was he not, especially during his early days with eindhoven and barcelona.
A striker who had/has it all - power, pace, skills and an eye for goal. Even when he squandered most of his talents and after all those injuries he was still better than most. notworthy.gif

No matter how he looks or how he acts, the man deserves a big respect due to his skills and effort during his prime.
This may be his final exit, I'd say whether he goes or stay, in comparison, he still can beat any Malaysians (professional footballer or just anyone) here in a 1-on-1 match biggrin.gif

Hah, celebrity life huh? Maybe he may start his career in acting or probably open a pub or something.

Anyways, lets not put it as though he's retired or dead. The media are making it look bad, though i agree there's a chance he may retire altogether.

in the words of Journey, dont stop believing!

Mr R9 was my childhood hero. IMO he was the best of the best during his prime time. he was awesome at PSV , Barca and Inter. overcame injury after injury. but still did well at Real. and was massive for Brasil.

get well quick Ronaldo. how i wish Livepool signed him.

There's already a Ronaldo looong before Cristiano is famous.

Why is he a 'fat b*****d'? R9 is a legend, one of the best in the world and he's a joy to watch on the pitch. He might be the fattest player on the planet but his strike-rate is absolutely phenomenal, and considering his weight problem for the last 4-5 years, he's just incredible, even after he had a career-threatening injury while at Inter.

QUOTE(Hevrn @ Feb 15 2008, 08:12 AM)

3 on 1 should be easy, mind you while he was at Barca he stormed the opponents half and took them single handedly and scored a goal. notworthy.gif

Get well soon Ronaldo. I hope he'll still be able to play for the WC2010.

P/S: If anyone notice, the famous Ronaldinho's 'zig-zag' skill was used by Ronaldo in his younger days.

Ron surgery successful
Friday 15 February, 2008

Ronaldo's knee operation yesterday evening was a success as messages of support continue to pour in from the world of calcio.

Milan's striking star severed a tendon in his knee during Wednesday night's game against Livorno at San Siro and there are fears that his career may be over.

El Fenomeno turned to the same medical team that restructured his other knee in 2000. The surgery took place in Paris' Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital where Ronnie is staying in the same room as he did eight years ago.

"It went well," Gerard Saillant, the doctor who performed the surgery in 2000 explained having supervised colleague Eric Rolland during the procedure.

"The operation took close to two hours and there were no complications.

"Now Ronaldo must rehabilitate the knee and that will take around nine months. Whether he will play again depends on him."

News of the injury has prompted tributes from all over the peninsula and Empoli Coach Alberto Malesani is the latest man to offer his best wishes.

"It's such a shame," he said. "I really hope that he can come back, even if it will be very difficult.

"I believe that after Diego Maradona he is the best player of the last 30 years, so I am devastated that he has been hit by another bad injury.

"It's such horrible news because he is a great lad as well as a pleasure to watch.

"Unfortunately he has had too many of these accidents in his career and now he will have to fight doubly as hard as he did with his other knee.

"He would be a big loss to the world of football and I hope for the good of calcio that he returns," the former Panathinaikos man concluded.

'Too early to tell' if Ron will recover
Friday 15 February, 2008

Ronaldo's doctors admit it is "too early to say" if he will ever play again, but Leonardo tried to be reassuring.

The Milan striker snapped the tendon in his left knee during Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Livorno and underwent surgery in Paris.

The diagnosis is to be out for at least nine months, but doctors in the La Pitie' Salpetrie're hospital released a less confident statement this evening.

"It is too early to say what the chances are of Ronaldo playing competitive soccer again," the statement said.

"That will depend not only on the surgery, but also on physical therapy and the motivation of Ronaldo - currently 31 years old - to return to high-level sports."

Ronaldo was accompanied in the ambulance from San Siro by former Rossoneri and Brazil star Leonardo and went with him to Paris for the operation.

"It was a relaxed night. Now he just needs to rest, that is all he has to do right now," said the club director.

"These have certainly been very intense days full of emotion and for this reason he has to relax. He slept and just needs to recuperate the energy he lost."

Ronaldo's father has told newspapers in Brazil that this great career is not over and Leonardo agrees.

"His father is optimistic and I think optimism always helps. Only time will tell Ronaldo what he needs to do.

"The only positive aspect of all this is that Ronaldo is well aware of what comes ahead and what he has already been through. I think he is ready."

Ron 'offered contract renewal'
Saturday 16 February, 2008

Ronaldo's agent has thanked Milan for offering a contract renewal days after a career-threatening injury.

Even the surgeons who operated on the snapped tendon in his left knee cannot say if the striker will ever play again, but his representative is hopeful.

"Ronaldo is a warrior who has fought and won so many battles in his lifetime," said Fabiano Farah.

"He is the type of person who goes all the way in his challenges and I think he is ready for this latest fight."

There had been talk of Ronnie's contract before the horrific injury in the 1-1 draw with Livorno on Wednesday.

One would've thought the setback - which at the very least will keep the 31-year-old out for nine months - would preclude any paperwork, but the agent revealed that is not the case.

"Every indication suggests the Rossoneri are interested in renewing his contract and Vice-President Adriano Galliani has already expressed this intention.

"Ronaldo wants to get back to playing football, but his primary objective right now is to be healthy and go through a successful rehabilitation process."

A contract renewal could be an important motivating factor, as even surgeon Eric Rolland warned today that the psychological aspect is crucial in coming back from such a serious injury.
