Got mine on Friday for 1450 (black AP biggrin.gif ) full set with screen protector.
Its not particularly fast, but it is pretty reliable, which is ok for me.

Btw, the new firmware is already out, but not for the Singapore CDA sad.gif
And I can't find out how to flash it to generic world or something else. Does anyone here know?

And one more stupid question. I made a bunch of notes. Now how do I make them sticky notes? So that they show in standby mode??? blink.gif It should be obvious...but its not :|

wat is Singapore CDA?
*
Well, from what I understand from reading posts on the internet:
The firmware of Sony Ericsson smartphones has two parts, one is the PDA and Phone software (the Symbian OS), and the CDA (which is usually fixed).
The PDA/Phone software is what runs on the phone, the CDA is for identification of the phone's region. There are different ones like Arabic (for Middle East), Hong Kong, Hebrew, German, Singapore, World, etc.
When you run the Sony Ericsson Update Service, it checks your phone's CDA first, then sees if theres an update for that region.

There is already a firmware upgrade out which fixes some issues (forgot what), and its out for World, Arabic, Hebrew, German, and some other ones, but NOT for Singapore mad.gif

I think the World CDA is the one that receives upgrades first.

Btw, you can see the version your phone has by using this code:
CODE
>*<<*<*
when its in standby mode. Then open Service Information, then Software Information.
My CDA is R6H815, and the phone software is R9L004.

And can you please tell me how to sticky the note? smile.gif

Added on July 21, 2008, 6:03 pm sad.gif
I don't think it can display notes in standby.
Not without an app anyway.

You might be able to upgrade the firmware then.
Did you try it?

By the way, if anyone has installed Swiss Manager on their G900, can you check the system tab? It detects my phone as W960 :S
When I connected it to XS++ it also detected it as W960 :S
I'm guessing both the programs have phone models listed internally and not reading the firmware of the phone or anything.

yup I installed Swiss Manager Pro 1.60, it detects as w960i too. I find it's quite difficult to connect WIFI most of the time. But once i delete the previous profile and scan again it can connect again. But the process is quite time consuming.

And is it possible to check the sms counter?
*
The WiFi problem is actually solved in the new firmware, but since we have the local CDA we can't upgrade now (not released for Singapore/Malaysia yet)

Can't find the messaging counter yet.

XS++ also doesn't work with this phone sad.gif so I can't change the CDA.

Ok, I'm writing a guide for it now.

Btw, you will lose any chinese support though. I think only the eastern CDAs (Hong Kong, Singapore, etc) support Chinese). If you need Chinese language you'll have to wait for the new firmware.

BTW, changing the CDA will voied warranty on my ori g900???

As far as I know...yes. But I only know from searching on google tongue.gif One guy's theory is if you put back the original CDA and firmware, no one will know. Not sure about this.

But mine is AP, and I'm leaving Malaysia, so warranty is no use for me.

How to change the CDA of your G900

Sorry for the almost 1 month delay, but heres how to change your G900 to generic world (or any other firmware if you have the CDA code). It should be pretty easy to understand, if you have any questions pm me, but I might not reply soon (and I don't know everything too).
This also works for M600, P1i, W960, P990, and other SE UIQ3 Symbian smartphones. (not sure about older ones).

DISCLAIMER: If you do something wrong, it is possible that you will BRICK your G900. DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK
This most probably will VOID your warranty. (not sure about this).

Why would I want to change it?
o Firmware updates are released for the Generic World CDAs before any localized CDAs (especially eastern ones).
o You can change it to any localized firmware too, if you know the code.

Any side effects?
o No Chinese support with the Generic World CDA. You can change yours from Singapore to Hong Kong etc if you still want Chinese, but it wont make much difference.

What do I need?
Hardware:
o The phone, of course.
o PC with USB port, and preferably Windows XP. If you have Vista, run XS++ in XP compatibility mode to be sure. Make sure SEUS is working first!!!
o DCU 65 or DCU 60 (USB data cable). The one that comes with your phone (in Malaysia) usually is DCU 65.

Software:
o Sony Ericsson Update Service (SEUS). You probably have this on the CD that came with your phone. If not, download it.
o XS++. You can download it from here.
o HexWorkshop from here. You can use any hex editor of course, but this one is pretty good with built in checksum calculators (which will be needed).
All the software is free. It won't cost you anything if you do it right (except time).

Finally, thanks to mut@nt's post describing the procedure for an M600, which works the same with the G900.

First of all you can see your firmware versions by opening the Menu. Touch More, and touch System Information. It will give you the firmware versions. Write them down somewhere.

Steps:

1. Run SEUS. Follow the instructions. If it doesn't find new software for your phone then continue.
2. Disconnect the phone, and remove the battery.
3. Put the battery back in again.
4. Unzip XS++ in a folder (don't run it directly from the zip file, it needs a folder).
5. Run XS++
6. Tick the box called "SMARTPHONE CONNECT".
user posted image

7. Turn the phone off if you turned it on again. Remove the battery and put it back again.
8. Click on the "Connect" button in XS++. It will ask you connect the phone in the same way you did in SEUS.
9. Hold down the "C" button on your phone.
10. Connect the USB cable to the phone (and the PC if you removed it, of course).
11. It will start detecting the phone and give a few messages. DO NOT RELEASE THE "C" BUTTON!
12. When its done you'll get a message "Ready for Operation". Now its safe to release the button.
user posted image
NOTE: When you have the old CDA, XS++ might detect it as a W960 (I took this screenshot AFTER modding). It does not matter, its ok.

13. Don't touch anything else in XS++.
14. Click on the GDFS circle in the Configuration group.
15. You should see a button called "Backup GDFS". Click on it.
16. It will start saving the GDFS file. It will take about 30 seconds - 1 minute.
17. After its done, go to the folder where you unzipped the XS++ software. There should be another folder called "Backup" inside.
18. In the Backup folder, there will be one .BIN file with its name something like "W960_************_GDFS_BACKUP.bin".
19. Make a copy of the file, and don't touch it.

20. Install Hex Workshop if you haven't already.
21. Open Hex Workshop. Click on Options>Preferences, and under Columns, there will be a drop down box titled "Group by:". Select "2 (short)". Apply and click OK.
22. Open the BIN file in Hex Workshop.
23. You should see something like this:
user posted image
Most of won't make sense, but we don't need most of it.

24. Scroll to the very end of the file.
25. Now on the right you will see the firmware versions of your phone. This is what we need to change.
user posted image

26. The one at the very end is the CDA firmware. You need to change it to the Generic World 1 version. The code for the Generic World 1 is:
CDA: 1204-3148 R6J825
(The one you see in the screenshot is my old CDA firmware versions.)

27. When changing the text, you cannot select all and replace. You need to place the flashing thing before the letter you want to edit and type. It will automatically overwrite it.
28. So put the cursor before the CDA code starts and type "1204-3148" and click before 'R' and type "R6J825" (without the quotes of course). Don't type in the periods, it will change the hex code.
user posted image
Left: Before
Right: After

29. So now you should have the same number of letters. Only the letters are different.
30. This is the important part. If this is not done right, it WILL NOT work.
Select exactly the same letters (on the right side) as in the picture below. Starting from the 2 dots before the first version number, to the last letter of the CDA version.
user posted image

31. Click on Tools, then on "Generate Checksum".
32. Just click on "Generate"
33. On the bottom right you will see a lot of checksums and CRCs.
user posted image

Note the value of the 8-bit checksum (Checksum-8, the first one). This will probably be different for you, its ok. The value will have two letters/numbers.

34. On the left side, (as in the picture) there should be a block "000D" after the selected part. In the next block, change the first two letters to the value of the 8-bit checksum. Be careful not to change anything else.
user posted image

35. Save the file under another name (but as a .bin file).

34. Connect and turn on the phone the same way as earlier using XS++.

35. Under the GDFS tab, beside the "Restore GDFS" button, select the modified .bin file.

36. Click on Restore GDFS. Might take a minute or two.

37. After its done, and XS++ disconnects the phone, take out the battery, put it back in and restart. You should now see TWO firmware versions under CDA. This is normal. But if you don't see two versions, it means you did something wrong.

38. Update the phone using SEUS, it should now detect it as Generic World 1, and will download the updated firmware. It will take a while though, depending on your internet connection.

39. After SEUS finishes everything, restart and you should see the latest firmware version and only one CDA version.

If it doesn't work, just restore the original GDFS, and your phone should be the same as earlier.

Hi Kee,

If there was a script for the G900 it would've been much much easier, but unfortunately there isn't. Which is why I posted the guide. (I don't know how to make a script.)

Can you upload the original bin file? The unmodified one. If it did not have 000D you weren't supposed to add it tongue.gif though I don't know how you managed to get 2 CDAs anyway.

But remember, if it doesn't work, just restore the original GDFS tongue.gif

GW1 is noticeably faster, especially the touch scrolling of zoomed images. smile.gif

zombie, and those who can help to change G900 to GW1,

Here's my .bin file. anything sharp eyes to see what's wrong ? p.s. sorry, had to zip it because lowyat no allow to upload .bin

I followed step-by-step, (no problems with XS++), as well as highligting the strings, and ensuring 000D and 02 (8-bit checksum) is there, and send the new bin file to phone, and i got 2 CDAs, but SEUS still say phone is updated..
HELP!

I've got Garmin XT (using holux m1000) installed on my G900 (previously from p1i). not a problem...

Added on August 19, 2008, 6:29 pmmy CDA:
1210-0066 R2A
1205-0646 RGH815

Added on August 19, 2008, 11:07 pmis there any script for XS++ for G900?? Previously, when i flash my P1i, it was simpler.

anyway, zombie, on the 000D part, my hex did not have that! ??? mine was different. I changed it to 000D, and didn't work. I left it as it is, and didn't work too. SEUS still say, no update available. I followed your instructions to the d.o.t.!

so sad.. i want GW1, because on my previous P1i, i successfully changed the CDA to GW1 and updated via SEUS, and it ran faster, fonts had anti-liasing, yada, yada.

Hi,

Thanks for uploading it.
But when I download it, it says the zip file is corrupt or one part of many :S

Also, if your CDA is one of the small ones (R5A, R9A, etc), DON'T INCREASE it. Like I said in my earlier post, you shouldn't change the size of the file, just replace the letters. Also make sure you're not confusing the phone/organizer versions with the CDA version.

I'm not sure, but there might be a shorter version of Generic world (maybe generic world 2), but I don't know the code. So I'm sorry, you'll have to find that code and try to replace it.

Again sorry for the (very) late replies, I'm still travelling.

Yes, you should not use a GDFS from any other handset. It might be that some models have generic ones, while some have unique ones.

QUOTE(kee leong @ Aug 21 2008, 12:41 AM)
Hi Masterzombie,

Here is my original GDFS.

Note to the rest, please do not use other GDFS (even your friend's same model) except your own (or your own modified). I read around and they say if you do use other GDFS from other phones (same model), it will brick your phone, i.e. kaput!

Hmmmm... re-comment.. somebody else said, no problem using other GDFS because like XS++, it's a generic GDFS..  i confused liao..

I've discovered that there ARE photo frames and clip arts in this phone too (same as the ones in the old SE phones. Even my old K500i has these).

But since they're low resolution, they're not available in the main camera program.

Create a new MMS and take a picture, and then you can add frames and clip arts to it. You get the same picture editor as in the old ones.

I don't think it matters at all. Just some older card reader firmwares could not support cards bigger than 2GB.

To check the firmware version, open the Main Menu, press(touch) the More button, and select System Information.
My firmware is Generic World, not Singapore (no Chinese support), and I just updated it, the latest one is 1203-8784 R6K842 (Organizer) and 1204-3148(CDA)
Theres no memory card with the phone, but maybe the shop might offer you a deal.

Well, I don't think that can be done, unless you send the mms to yourself maybe...? blink.gif

This phone does have a few simple features missing, silly isn't it? tongue.gif

Another thing I miss is being able to start a slideshow with pictures in one folder only. You can't even browse by folders in the Media program, and the file manager doesn't have slideshows, and is pretty slow working with big pictures.

In case of any problems, and in case you have no problems (in any case tongue.gif), update your phone before using it. The latest firmware is very stable, and noticably faster. The new default theme is light and fast too (and looks great).

Symbian was founded by Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola, and maybe others. Now, Symbian is completely owned by Nokia AND is open source (or going to be soon). UIQ and S60 are only user interfaces, so any app written for S60 theoretically can be easily ported for UIQ if the author wishes to. So don't worry, only the UI of the G900 is going to die, not the OS wink.gif Even so, its not like UIQ is completely useless.

Btw, "G" stands for "Generation Web".

i dont think that they will completely stop it. i think it might slow down a bit. but i dont think it will be killed off.

if it really is opensource then there is a possibility itll end up being better than windows mobile. hahahah. at least thats what im hoping tongue.gif

It already is better than WinMo. You don't need to tap the screen 5-6 times just to open the task manager tongue.gif

I think its because "there aren't enough users". But then that is SE's fault. There are...6 or 7 UIQ models. Compare that to...I don't know how many, but there are a lot of S60 models by Nokia compared to 6-7 by SE (and 2-3 by Motorola - no one knows they exist tongue.gif).
