I would say these are just casual snapshots. For chapter 3, the first 2 pics probably can go with wider angle, coz can't see much from the river stream.

Butterflies are underexposed and soft/oof/blurry.

Hmm, what do you mean by casual snapshots? Mind to elaborate on there? Still noob here.

I just folowed the child wherever he goes and managed to capture his expressions which i think is very natural.

As for chapter 3's river stream, i don't have a tripod and i only rest it on a rock. The rest of the pics is awful, that is the best angle i can get.

Can you suggest how can i improve the shots of the butterfly?

Most of these pics are very point and shoot lookalike apart from the out of focus effect.

The butterfly pics are underexposed. Next time you could try use spot metering and meter on the subject (ie: the butterfly). Use faster shutterspeed to prevent blurry subject. Closer would be better also. If dark, use a bounced flash to lighten dark areas.

AFAIK, I'm not supposed to use any flash whenever taking photographs of animals or insects. That is why I did not use the flash.
Maybe its a myth, I do not know. But animals don't like such flare right?

Too near later the butterfly fly away-lah!

For close up portraits, if there's not much interesting with the face expression, try play around with texture, utilizing light and shadow...that will give better impact.

my commends:

chapter 3
#1-sky over exposed, for long exposure, better don't include too much of bright sky, like the #2 is good.
#3 & #4-bit out of focus, bump up ISO to obtain faster shutter speed or uses bounce flash.

chapter 2
#3-i like this, nice composition.

chapter 1
i like all of them, just need more skill to manipulate your flash and understand WB.

Yeah i'm still having problem understanding flash and getting the right colour for the WB settings.

its not Point n shoot issue...
i think u need to adjust ur white balance control to restore the skin tones...washed portraits

chapter 3 looks dull. something to do with the colors. i think it can be improved.

I think a little post processing wouldn't hurt the pictures. At least it will help sharpen some of the pictures and correct the WB.

Post processing is pretty much part of a photographer's workflow these days. No need Photoshop as even a simple program like Picasa can help out
