exactly!! that's the point of HDR. in my opinion anyway. i mean. once your images go thru photomatix. that itself dah tak original. its already an artistic representation of what you captured. blending is just another neat way to get more out of your original image. You're not adding things that are not in the original image. but instead bringing out more of it. and at the end of the day, we mostly do HDR to create surreal,stunning images otherwise impossible with conventional methods.

try doing HDR without tonemapping and then you'll understand what im talking about. the image you get after photomatix combines the differently exposed images. thats the actual HDR image. doing it without photomatix you'll get pretty crap images. if you don't believe me, try merging a hdr image in photoshop without any major adjustments afterwards. to get something tonemapped as found in photomatix you're gonna be processing layers upon layers of masking and blending to get similar results.

therefor if you use photomatix you are already processing the HDR image beyond its actual scope. trust me, i've done my homework lol.

for the 2nd one obviously yes.
the first one is just some tonemapping, burning and blurred the sky.
the last one is HDR. with levels adjustment.
