I try hard, but lately I've been doing very poorly. I'm not sure if it's because my room is like an oven or that I've been in a negative mood lately... I always have hard time with small teams... I need a lot of practice with competition style play.

Yeah, set it to auto-join, but keep refreshing and trying to join. I think if many people are queued who ever's system connects first will auto-join and others will continue to wait, so keep hitting that join button just in case.
