bamboo is a good start, i have 1 bamboo my self

but there is a limit to what bamboo can do, its hard to explain

its like if you want to do detail work you need at least intuos 4, where there are more arsenal in your hand,
especially doing line art and other detail stuff

i cant help much but you better check this out first

http://dreadlock13.deviantart.com/gallery/...set=48#/d2nx90x

and make sure you download the video

the video consist a well tutorial on anatomy and most important is how to color them

good luck

bamboo pen is good for starter, intuos is better but then i think you get bamboo first for practice it. since as the level detailing you can use zoom in function for that. no need so high end tablet like intuos for these.
learning anime? if you have some basics of human anatomy then anime is pretty similar stuff to draw. observe the manga you like to read then ya, pretty general for that.

man i forget which of my old was using graphire4 which is half performance of the bamboo only...i think this was using the graphire 4 .

set the colored layer to multiply

the line art are to thick if you using the vector layer or some sai version say the linework layer

after adding line and curve use the weight tool to re size the line foe example
if you use the line layer as 1 pixel then use the weight layer as 2 or 3 pixel

after that use the pressure tool to adjust the line at curve point so it look like it was sketch from pen

enhance it or reduce the layer thickness using this pressure tool

i ll try to work with your art and show you how it look like soon

there are many style
1 is like your friend say
those are color over

but you need to understand the concept first

and that is layers

with your friend style the line art it at top

other style like mine is line art bottom

try this

line art layer bottom layer = normal
colour layer top layer = multiply
