Hey there, planning to get a new laptop soon, currently shopping around so will need some ideas and recommendations.

Brand: Along the lines of Dell and HP/Compaq. Not Acer (Some say quality kinda sucks, not long lasting). Not Sony (I think the extra costs for style and design isn't necessary).

Use: Typical work (eg: internet surfing, emailing, downloading, work, assignments, etc), and also to properly run games (no lagging or hang) like Sims 2 and DotA.

Size: Hopefully not too heavy (Less than 2.8 kg). and not too big (Less than 15')

Budget: Max RM 2.6k

Really need your help and suggestions, need recommendations on:
- Brand and model
- Specs

Hehe thanks thanks =)

Dell Inspiron will be sufficient.

Alright, then how about the specs?

- Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, would 1.8GHz be enough, or more than enough?
- Memory: Would 2G RAM be enough, or more than enough?
- Graphic Card: Would the NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS be necessary?

Thanks for d insight =)

Erm... This is what we could see as brand power. As we know, Sony has its reputation good in the electronic field. Therefore, its product is always having good quality compare to others. Not to say other not good. This can be see in Apple also, as you can see the spec of apple macbook and ipod not really that superb also but the price is ridiculous. However, there are some consumer who like and believe in brand for its reputation. Of course, you have to pay for the brand also instead of the parts. However, its still up to you to choose which is the best that suits your budget and needs. As for myself, I choose Dell bcso it provides me with the customizeable spec which I could add in graphic card as I like. This couldn't be done in other brand. Besides that, they also provide me with the price within my budget. So, what you need to do is, think again of your budget and needs. If you have a budget thats high enough for a sony and you like to own a "BRANDED" laptop, then go for it. If you are looking for one which is worth for money, I would say, DEll will be a good choice. If you need help to decide which laptop is best for you, tel me your budget. Besides that, Dell provide better service as all dell warranty is onsite while sony is carry in(onsite need to pay extra to upgrade). kianchun555.

Hi all,

I'm looking for a laptop for .net development, can anyone provide me spec?

while I was doing .net development I can see it only use max 50% of my cpu usage on my core 2 duo desktop pc, does this mean the .net dev env only use one of the core?

in this case, would a single core or dual core with high "ghz" run faster for development?

after some research, a 7200rpm hdd helps a lot, how bout ram?

appreciate help from you all, thanks ya.

Added on June 11, 2008, 10:00 pmHi all again,

a website said that P4 CPU generate more heats than any others, heat is not good esp. for laptop.. is that true?

thanks all.

in my opinion, the only great thing about FZ35g is the nice and bright 15.4" lcd screen which is using technology borrowed from bravia. but the 8400M GT graphics its using is not on par with 8600M GT on Dell models at the same price. if youre not a gamer then i think its not an issue. but if you really want this FZ35g, pls do consider CR35g too. if you like a shiny and glossy design, and prefer smaller lcd screen then i say go for CR35g instead. CR35g selling for RM4288 now and FZ35g selling for RM4988(including free 2gb ram upgrade). tough choice actually rclxub.gif

Hi.. I would like to buy a laptop (budget about RM3k, but the lower the batter). I primarily wanna use it for surfing, office work, photoshop, and some heavy Flash or powerpoint presentations. Any reccomendation?

I'm currently looking at the Acer 4520, which is going at about RM2k with the following specs:

AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TK-53 1.70 GHz 256 KB L2 cache
Linux
1GB DDR2 667 MHz RAM
Nvidia GeForce 7000M (256 MB of system memory)
Nvidia nForce 610M (MCP67-MV)
Deatiled specs here (http://www.techtree.com/India/Reviews/Acer_Aspire_4520/551-84197-616.html)

Any comments or suggestions? Any other models I should consider?

Thanks in advance.

am using FZ35G. 8400M GT definitely can play game but very much depends on what sort of games you playing. however this machine not design for hardcore gamer, good for watching movie.

i would recommend you to use Intel processor...TK chip is slower as compare to TL, but generate less heat and energy saving.
as for graphic, go for dedicate graphic, Nvidia geforce is not really a good one,
at least a 8400Gs/8600GT, but @ your budget 3K, 8400GS is what you can get.
acer generally cheaper, get yourself at least a 4920G model...
as for dell, go for 1420/1520 with 8400GS...

Hi, my dad is planning to get a laptop soon. he's using it just for work and some internet surfing only.

1. Brand - any one that suits my budget. prefably not acer.
2. Budget - around RM2k
3. Specs - anything that suits the budget, prefably dual core, 1GB or 2GB RAM, windows OS not necessary

i saw compaq c700 series and also v3700 series. both also around rm1.8k range, but the v3700 series got nvidia 7150 intergrated gc which i think should be better than intel's x3100. at least can have occasional light games. which one is better? or got any other brands that are recommended?

thnx in advance. biggrin.gif
