I agree that your first guitar can be very sentimental. Heck, I still keep my first crapstrat, but it's going for a MAJOR overhaul soon...... I've been saying that for over a year and still haven't done anything though......
But when I had my cash saved up, I went for a new guitar. I figure, they both have their own individual sound, and if I have two, I can alternate between them..... I still do play the crapstrat (but the tuners makes me FURIOUS!) when I want that Single Coil pickup tone, and then play my Les Pauls for the heavier stuff....... BTW, I still play ALL my guitars. My LP-100 is now setup for downtuning and alot of low-end riffing stuff, while my ZW Les Paul is the more general Go-To guitar which handles most of the songs I play and the RR3 is for the shredding or soloing stuff......
The only thing I lack is a general guitar that can also shred, which is where my new E-Gen (Coming to my studio when it's released) will fit in.
My very long winded answer is that I think you should get a new guitar. Don't worry..... GAS will always be there.
