It is much better to find a place which is within walking distance. Taking a tram to and fro is definitely time consuming yet exhausting. By the way, it is now a bit (or rather too) late to find a place to move in during july. Most of the accommodation which is near uni is almost fully booked. Finding a place not-so-close to uni is still possible. You may try unilodge, college square, s-h-a etc. to see whether places are still available.
As a quick guide, rooming house (hostel type, own bedroom with shared bathroom and other facilities) will cost approx. AUD180-200 per week, maybe much lower if far away from city and uni. Apartment with single bedroom costs approx. AUD250-300 p.w., two-bedroom (means if u share with another person) costs approx. AUD200-250 p.w. If u live in private rented house with friends, it is much lower providing everyone shares the cost, maybe only AUD150-170 p.w. But the problem it is usually unfurnished and you need to spend extra on establishment costs. Living in residential college can be considered very expensive, it costs AUD450-500 p.w. including three meals per day. But you can get extra academic support in college, i.e. extra tutorial program offered to enhance your understanding.
Try calling up college square (lygon and swanston) or arrow on swanston which are both close to uni. There should be some people moving out. The res colleges require you to go through interviews and they won't necessarily guarantee you a place too since they require you to have good sporting/music/etc abilities and not many students move out after sem 1. But, it is still a good choice for one semester and you can shift you next year.

Hello guys, i might be 'officially' joining this 'Studying in Australia' club in July. I find that you guys are experienced in living overseas so i would like to ask for your advice and opinion before i do anything stupid.
1. How many of you guys actually plan to live and work in Australia after your studies? What are required in order to get a Visa to live and work in Australia? There are so many different types of Visas, i am really confused.
2. I was offered to study a Degree in Business Administration by USQ, but my first preference is Bachelor of Commerce Majoring in Finance, although the assessment of my application is not released yet. What i am worrying is that DBA has no major, and that might make me less competent in the job market. Can anyone advise me regarding this issue?
The above questions are important for me to decide on what course to study, so i thought i should seek some advice from you guys.
Thank you very much.
What you need now is a higher education student visa(class 573 i think)-which will come with permission to work (20 hours a week) if you applied after April the 26/28. This visa will last you throughout all your years in uni.
If you fail an exam and need to study longer, then you'll need to apply for a visa extension, so try not to fail.
Once you graduate, you might want to apply for a PR. Then, you'll need a bridging visa to stay in australia while you wait for your PR to be granted
There also tourist visas for tourists and a bunch of others, but right now you'll just need to worry about your student visa.
