What are the solutions for you guys? Using the licensed Office 2007/2003 to do your assignments?
*
Buy the Office here as Microsoft has a promotional offer for tertiary students (only $75 for Ultimate edition). There is no reason to use a pirated version. You can spend so much for a laptop, but are not willing to shell out for productivity software?

Anyway, you don't really need Office as you can use open source alternatives.

Ah, damn it. That shopkeeper tried to convince me to spend hundreds ringgits to purchase a license for Office 2007, telling me the airport checking stuff. Luckily i was not convinced.

To be safe, i will make sure my laptop is not containing any pirated software before entering the airplane.

What are the solutions for you guys? Using the licensed Office 2007/2003 to do your assignments?

Im still using Office 2000.Not ori one.

I really doubt that they gonna check every single software in your com.

I have like 10+ games,Maple,AutoCAD and the list goes on.

How are they going to check all of them?I even have an ori game that it like a pirated game. You dont even need to touch the CD Key at all.How are they going to differentiate the pirated copy and the original copy of that game?

If they are so concern about piracy, they might as well block BT since most people just download softwares from there.

Would the HDD survive through? I don't trust the post with my documents, let alone something with moving parts!

The price difference between 3.5 inch HDD's in Australia (Brisbane at least) isn't that great. Usually about RM20 or so, and delivery costs to Australia will be more than that. Is it worth it?

U can use bubble wrap.. wrap more layers, then find a better box. Well, u use other courier servicer beside POX lAMBAT. (if you mind to pay more)

If you have worries, why don't buy hard disk at here.. then download.. I know tat here got bandwidth limit. Im not sure whether you can download at uni. if you have unlimited download available.. u can use rapid share or megaupload//

Thanks for the replies, guess i'll just use open source software. By the way, i don't think there is unlimited bandwidth package in Australia, at least i didn't find one in broadbandguide.com.au. Is there any?

See you guys at Sydney. thumbup.gif

Oh yeah, my handphone died a few weeks ago. And I'm finding a replacement.
But my cousin at aussie said it's better if I can get a 2 years contract for a free phone.
What do you think?

i need some help guys please, im going to study in curtin perth this july and the accommodation thing is really getting on my nerves. the uni im going to put my status under waiting list which doesnt seem too good, my parents are bugging me to go like 1 week pre orientation to sort things out, thats like 3 weeks before class starts and i dont think its reasonable to stay that long.

so should i go early, which i have to stay in a hotel until i get it, or later a day before orientation. im like having half a mind to skip the orientation to fix the settling down issues.

how hard is it to get a damn room in perth? my family is like claiming its the hardest thing to do ( damn relatives)

and where can i look for accommodation, the site given in the first page doesnt seem helpful. it doesnt really offer rooms.

Well it's good to sign up for the 24 months contract once you get here and get a free phone, but in order to sign up for that you'll need to provide bank statement and other relevant documents, which I reckon will take some time before you receive them. Hence, prior to signing up for one, you'll have to rely on a prepaid first, so I reckon it'd be a good idea if you have a temporary phone with you.

Yeah, you can get a free phone that cost around 1k in Malaysia.

Im using 3 now.I manage to get my new phone and number in 1 day's time. You should be able to that.

The disadvantage of using 3 is the signal can be very weak at times.

Hi, Curtin University of Technology (Perth), actually has it's own accommodation (Vickery House), which i think u're on the waitng list now. The 1 week orientation is really important as an introduction to you in Perth, plus accommodation around Curtin (Bentley) are sometimes avaliable if you run around finding around the notice boards in the shops and stores.

To be honest with you, it is really hard to find rooms when u are not here. about 2 years ago i was too looking for rooms available near nedlands which is in UWA area, and i had such trouble getting a room. My uncle who is a citizen here practically tried renting more than 10 houses for me but all were rejected. I was lucky enough to get a room through my dad's friend.

So it is best for you to come earlier to settle down. As for orientation, i think its crap for me, thats for UWA i am not too sure for Curtin.

Everyone coming to Australia should keep in mind it is a buyers market in most major regional capitals.Finding a place can be a nightmare.

If you want to stay on campus, it all depends on which college you want to be in. I've never had the luxury of staying in the Residential Colleges, but prices are about $250/wk on average.

My advice? I strongly recommend 1st time, 1st year students at least try to find university managed accomodation. Trying to fight with the Brisbane rental market will be murder. At least stay there for 6 moths, get used to the place and environment, and after sem 1 you might consider moving out.

Average rent for a room off campus minus utilities around the St Lucia area is about $150/wk.

And if you find "any units that could accommodate 1 person per unit" thats not unilodge, please tell me. biggrin.gif
