Hi ppl..i'm in nd of some help..if you guys/gals are willing plz visit this thread >.<

http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/642896

Thx in advance..

Read a few posts back. A pet shop owner once told me that to differentiate the sex of the star tortoises is to see if the back of the shell is going straight down or curves out like a skirt. Obviously the one with the out curved 'skirt' is a female n the one with the back of the shell going straight downwards is a male. For me, it was quite accurate because the male has been caught 'humping' the female many times over the course of 8 years. heh blush.gif but no offsprings though >.<

ok..thx uzairi.. so i've talked to my dad and we are planning to totally change their diet and all. So do u still give them pellet food once a week? If so, wat brand/name do you recommend.

Plus my dad has asked wat brand for the calcium supplement do you all recommend? For both indoor and outdoor coz sumtimes when its rainy season, its hard to take them out for basking plus the whole area would be wet.
Thx in advance.

>.< I juz got back from ikano. I tried looking for the Repti-Vite & Repti-Cal but they don't even have the brand there so i got JBL Microcalcium and JBL Herbil pellet food. Is this alrite? I took this brand coz dzi921 said in pg 6 that the MicroCalcium can be used. And there is no JBL TerraVit Powder, oni got fluid form juz now. Expiry at 2010.

If both are alrite to be given, den like inexsis said, should wet pellet 1st?

@dzi921 : I saw that the other day but closed d >.<

will try looking for Repti-Vite now. Btw, even if the brands are the same rite, can u mix both vite and calcium together in the food? Plus, do you add the cal n vite to pellet food?

Just an update coz reading the previous threads, you all seem to be scouting for TTT. At ikano, there are:

3 leopard tortoises
1 star tortoise (about 3 inches) [price tag: RM250]
1 big head turtle
1 (big) ally snapper
1 (small) snapper (dunno ally or common)
1 (I THINK) red-footed tortoise

How do you all choose the wattage for basking lamps? *this is juz for my info coz my torts are outdoor kept*

Thx in advance >.<

Actually its all talk and no action coz if there was a case of pet shops being raided den i'm sure most of the pet shops will keep their torts d. Many places still selling.
Btw, there are a few star torts at Damansara Uptown shop name called Galaxy.

Her story :
It was a cold windy evening before anyone noticed the epic battle that has ensued. She already had swollen eyes and neck by that time. We did everything we could to help her cause.
Rushing from vet to vet only to find that it has to be the next morning before a vet that handles exotic pets can see her. However she endured the night waiting to see the person whom might be able to give her a solution.

The next morning, she went out to bask in the bright yellow sun for a lil while hoping that it would stop her running nose. When she finally got to see the vet, she must have been in so much pain that her head couldn't even retract to the safety of her shell. During the examination, with tears in her eyes she allowed the vet to check her symptoms without letting out a squeak. The vet said that it was a serious lung infection. She could not hold her tears back when the vet injected her but the medicine seemed to have allowed her pain to subside as she was a lil more active now, moving around to find a better place for her to lie down and sleep waiting for the medicine to take its full effect.

She slept throughout the day, not even having the energy to eat but still made the effort to give her supporters eye contact to let them know that she's still here fighting her battle the hardest she could. She wasn't able to do much until it was time to meet the vet again. However this time she was able to retract back into the comfort of her shell which was a good sign. The vet wanted to confirm her condition therefore an X-ray was performed. The X-ray showed that her right lung was filled with water due to the infection. Another jab was performed, maybe she was used to it, maybe she just didn't have the strength for another tear, she accepted it without any acknowledgment. Thinking that she needed her rest like the last time, her supporters placed her in her sleeping area.

Come feeding time, her supporters found her not moving, not even a smallest reaction when gently nudged. Stroking her softly, her supporters was unwilling to believe that she has left them. Still believing that she might have still been fighting hard, her supporters left her there, checking whether she moved even if a little. However, body started to get even more stiff and there was still no sign of movement. Still doubting the fact, her supporters left her in her sleeping area over night, waking early in the morning to check on her but sadly she did not even move throughout the night.

She lost the battle but she will always be remembered by her supporters. Her name was Decimus.

*sry for such a long post but i just wanted to vent it out*

The doctor said that she most probably died due to pneumonia. At the vet, the doctor said that torts metabolism rate is very slow which may be one of the reason why they can live so long but it was a setback in this situation as it took the medicine much longer to take effect. So as an advise, if theres anything wrong with ur tort, administer med as soon as possible as it takes longer for them to heal. Btw Uzairi can answer sum questions at the previous few posts bout the food n all plz. Tq.

@slackers: They will choose when they wanna bask. Maybe its just too hot or they wanna explore. I think its normal but should get them sum UVB from time to time. Plus can share size and all?

Thx for ur condelences..Salad hurh, i will try if i fail 2 introduce mustard greens..yea,haf to get a pumpkin soon..dunwan to intro 2 many things at once..

Ur STs haf RNS everytime it rains? Thats weird..do u administer any medication? Coz i only have one incident with RNS but mine is severe till it became pneumonia and subsequently death. Whenever RNS accurs, got bubbles coming out from nose? U'll have to constantly sun them in natural sunlight if you wanna get rid of RNS plus give them multivites. U'll also need feedback from other ppl as i have lil experience with RNS.

Err slackers, u shouldn't pm me info..lolz..u should post here so more ppl can help u..like i said, i have little experience as my Torts' RNS was a severe type which had blood coming out. One side of the lungs was filled with water.

About finding a Vet, you can check Dr. Yeoh at Tmn Megah. The address can be found at the pinned up section 'list of vets'. Med was injected into the torts because if i remember correctly, someone in v2 mentioned that torts wun open their mouth willingly or unwillingly so easily.

Off topic: I juz read finish v1 and v2..took me a while >.<

Edit: The best time to sun ur torts would be from around 8am till around 10am coz after 10am (i feel) tat its too hot especially for younger torts. Ur torts bout 3inch i think about 20 - 30 minutes is enuff d and should alwiz haf a place for them to be in the shade so that they can avoid the sun if its too hot already.

If i'm not wrong..sum1 posted be4 (most prob uzairi or Samperth) that pellets tend to make them grow faster than normal therefore shortening their lifespan and natural greens are the best. But let the pros confirm tat 4 ya..

Chop up the mustard greens or any other veggies that you want to give them so that they won't choke on their food. Of course make sure you give them calcium and multivitamin supplements. For babies that small, i think it was mentioned be4 that the calcium supplement should be everyday or more frequent than adults. They should be given a variety of veggie and pumpkin like once an month like uzairi mentioned for de-worming. You should also read all the care sheets at the 1st post. Your baby STs are so small that it needs much more attention till u can make sure that they can survive. I only had a 50-50 chance for torts that small. Oh, and make sure u gif them have natural sun rays for vit D3.

Thx uzairi for answering my doubts. Another question: Can i give my tort hibiscus leaves as staple? Coz it refuses the mustard green until the point he uses the front leg and pushes it all away..=.=

QUOTE(uzairi @ Mar 17 2008, 02:42 PM)
How about mixing the mustard greed with the hibiscus leaves ? And do try the starving method.

*
I did the starving method already..he rather starves than eat it..even when he does eat, its juz a few munches and thats it..Thats wat i'm doing now.. Chop the hibiscus and mustard green 2gether but doesn't eat as much as when given the hibiscus itself. So i'll keep trying until theres a change i guess..

Skatila : Thats a bit too long sun bathing for such a young ST. Like the others have mentioned, make sure theres shade and better yet water. Another reminder is to be with them during that time for a few reasons: 1) make sure that they are safe from other animals/insects (there was a bad case in v2 where the STs were bitten to death..)
2) u get to observe and get to know their habits
3) u get to play with them tongue.gif
