Saw their ad stating that <<Fresh Graduate will be paid a salary not less than RM2800 a month>>
Sounds interesting eventhough I'm no longer fresh..
Wish to know more about their offer, environment, and culture, pls share!

Of course yes, but i cant say i worked with them before, I has been with SBB Mutual and took the unit trust exam, now registered under Public Mutual, but never utilize my lisence to make money... but basically it is like this:
First i want to ask you, do you know anything about unit trust and unit trust company? -> No (if yes skip this) Unit trust is one of the investment tools, like stock market, just that it is more easier, cheaper to invest and manage - just buy and wait at as low as RM1000. And it will not fluctuate as fast as stock market. This is not some get-rich-quick scheme, when you but a unit trust fund, you put in money to a cache of fund, where the fund managers will monitor your funds and use them to invest in diversified portfolio... sort of like EPF. And your investment will multiply over a long term period, like 3 years. Unit Trust company, like Public Mutual, sells and manage unit trusts. So as you can see, their main income came from selling unit trusts. Usually they will have their investment manager to manage a particular unit trust following certain rules. So the rest are the Unit Trust Consultants aka UTC. -> Yes Most likely you will be at the position as an Unit Trust Consultant, your job is educate people about unit trust and encourage people to buy your unit trust. Usually as an UTC, they do not have any basic salary, furthermore, they need to bear the cost to take the exam(very simple exam) and the registeration fee under Public Mutual. For Public Mutual, UTCs are their salesmen, of course the more the marrier, and they have a structure of rewarding your senior if bringing you into the business, sort of like a upline downline system. As you can see, this job do not offer basic salary, what you get is what you worked out for, you have no income upper limit, but no lower limit too - consider not only the cost to take exam/register, but also the expenses to call up potential clients and transportation fees to meet them up. Unit Trust business can be very rewarding if you do it the right way, similar to every kind of salesmen job, your income depends on your performance. You have all your freedom you want as you can be considered as self employed. You do not have retirement age, as long as you are productive, your company will want your to work till 110 years old. In short, you tell your friend about unit trust investment, and help them make money while you earn your commission. BTW, public mutual is the largest UT company in Malaysia. - - - - - - So, still feel like joining UTC? IMHO, it worth a try, you can even start it as part time. The least is you can at least learn about unit trust. |

Hey All,
Thanks for the reply. I'm actually not referring to become a Consultant (sales). I'm seeking advice from their employees, working directly under Public Mutual, how's the benefits, environment, and feedback.. |

As i know, working inside Public Mutual for normal employee are seem like you are working for normal bank withdraw counter employee....if you wan to earn more money, the sales line is only high income in public mutual company.

But then when interview that time, the interviewers were very friendly and they asked damn alot of questions. It was about 30 minute session. Alot of candidates were present so had to wait 1 hour for the interview... |

Oohh, guys can I ask something?
I'm finishing my A levels and before starting Uni I'd like some work experience. I'm going to study Actuarial Science. I believe some exposure in insurance companies / financial institutions / banks / unit trust firms / fund management firms would be great. I don't know too many firms hiring people without degree, and most post-A level/STPM jobs are for clerks and admin etc. Hence I was thinking of working as an adminnistrative assistant in any such company, such as Public Mutual - since I saw their job ads. Any advice on what I should do? Anything at all will be appreciated. TY |

I went for an interview with public mutual recently, for analyst position. What I can say is that the company condition is
not very good, dark and old (just like small sdn bhd companies but public mutual is so big in Malaysia). The desks look like old furniture that are thrown out by public bank and they just move them to public mutual to save money. They had 2 people to interview me separately, but they ask the same questions, so I have to repeat what I said (after a 2 hour test!!). Some of the things that make me feel extremely uncomfortable with the company: 1. Unwilling to introduce themselves with their position in the company even though I asked. What is there to hide? That’s when I started feeling something is not right with the company culture – lack of respect for candidates / employees. 2. Then, one of the interviewers look impressed by my uni results, but when he ask me about some stock market views, it is very obvious that he started to look down on me. I don’t know why, maybe because my views are different from his views. For example, he seemed surprised that my views are contradicting with his views about a company in the stock market. To me, differing opinions are normal but it seems that he is unable to accept that, and he was not ready for open discussion with me. I have a feeling that if i join this company, i will not be able to voice out my own opinion on my work, and they will give me “the look” again and will not approve on my recommendations or stocks. The way they treat their candidates also tell me that they will treat their staff the same way! No respect for employees, bad culture! I will decline any job offered by public mutual. |

QUOTE(RedJacket @ Feb 15 2012, 04:28 PM) I went for the interview for research analyst position with public mutual as well,... may i noe why u quit cf? from which ib?I was interviewed by 3 of them at one go. one of them was a fund manager, Cynthia. She really tembak me like shit. Just like you, i realised that they seem to enjoy rejecting ideas and opinions i had. To them, there is no right answer, unless it is the same answer as what they are expecting. The 2 hour test and essays went very well, but during the interview, it went so badly that i told the interviewer off. I said to her that an interview is supposed to be a 2 way conversation. It is a chance for you to learn more about me , as well as for me to learn about you instead of being grilled throughout by you. I also told her that so far, you hadnt answered any of my questions, but continue to question me. After that, she insulted me even more.. lol.. she said that my CV is one of the best already with experience in corporate finance and wealth management and yet i cannot answer questions properly. SHe then started to say that she had to start from the bottom when she joined, and i just got the feeling that she looked down on me , with disgust. lol... Honestly speaking, i felt that i could answer the interview questions quite well already. It just that the answers i gave were not HER ANSWERS. sighhh..... back to job applications again,.. cf better than research wat? |

sorry to hear bout the troubles. some tips in interview:
1- keep the ball on your turf, not theirs- keep the conversation within the topic you know better than the interviewer, which is your own experience. this way, theres very little room for interviewer to tembak u. tell them your experience. 2- when answering a question that doesnt really have a right answer, just pick the answer that you think is the most important and elaborate it using your experience. when the interviewer start saying out his version of answer, just agree and support him. look for common ground, not the difference. 3- show that you are interested and know about what kind of investment the company is involved in but never try to speculate or show u have superb knowledge cuz theres little chance you will know about that portfolio better than them. 4- when asking question to interviewer, ask a question that allow them to show you how great theirr job/achievement is. when they are done, says "interesting". "great". 5- when u give wrong answer or dunno the answer, apologize and ask the interviewer to share with u the answer. good luck. This post has been edited by luqmanz: Feb 16 2012, 01:46 PM |

have not went for interview but got similar experience with other asset management companies. Basically the role is to analyse and interpret financial data. Hence you need to know how basic investment stuff such as Price Earnings ratio, dividend yield, earnings per share growth and macro indicators such as GDP etc. Also maybe test on question such as if you have 50k, how long will it take to grow to 200k if the rate of return is 3% p.a. You have ample time because it is either you know or don't know the questions.

do some homework then, you can google the investment terms. Least of all, you must find out what is shares or unit trust as this what the department does.

The salary and benefit are as below:- Salary is RM2800 if you are a degree holder, otherwise if you are a diploma holder, or master degree holder I am not so sure about the salary. Annual leave- 21 days for executive, as your grade/ranking goes higher the leave will increase. Dental- RM300 per year Optical- No more optical starting from year 2014 Medical- If you visit any of the panel it will be free of charge, hospital plan is rm150 (per night for a room). Medical leave- up to 14 days for entry level :1 to 2 years serving in the company (as your years or serving increase, medical leave entitlement will also increase same with annual leave) Family medical expenses- RM800 per year (Spouse/Parents/Children) Maternity leave- 90 days Marriage leave- 10 days Compassionate leave- 2 to 3 days Examination leave- 7 days No service charge if you invest in Public Mutual Fund. Car/housing loan- You get lower rate than outside (subject to approval) Working hours- 8:30-5:30 If you need to work OT, the pay are as below:- 0-2 hours RM0 2-3 hours-RM35 3-4 hours-RM50 4 hours and above-RM65 Public bank staff visa card and master card- credit limit RM6000 Still got much much more benefit the list is too long and I'm lazy to type it all out, if you have anything in particular that you would like to ask can kindly pm me =) Working environment and culture I would preferably tell you in pm, so again feel free to pm me if you have any other enquiries. For me the interview process was sweet and smooth, no harsh question, no difficult question, the whole conversation is more like chit-chatting, easy-going or maybe I am just lucky. So far I'm okay with my job scope and environment, of course I have much more to share so feel free to pm me. |

QUOTE(Mel_sa @ Feb 3 2012, 11:11 AM) I went for an interview with public mutual recently, for analyst position. What I can say is that the company condition is Yeah, had a similar impression of Public Mutual's work environment. Just need to show that you can take the bs with a smile i guess. Lots of fund managers at investment houses here have a similar kind of attitude.not very good, dark and old (just like small sdn bhd companies but public mutual is so big in Malaysia). |
