1720 - S.M.A.R.T Hard Drive Detects Imminent Failure
FIRST! - BACKUP YOUR DATA then proceed read my recommendations below:
This is due to SMART feature affects the drive, its either your HDD does not support SMART feature but previously the SMART has been turned ON and the feature affects your HDD.
or
If your HDD supports SMART but the feature is turned OFF in CMOS, this is also could affect the HDD.
SMART is a technology built into hard drives the past made in the past 10 years or so. It monitors several key operating attributes of the drive. When one or more of these attributes reach a certain threshold, the drive is deemed as "failing" and it will report this status to the system. The BIOS, if it has SMART support enabled, will then give you a POST error telling you that the drive is failing so that you can perform a backup and replace the drive before it fails completely.
Now, SMART isn't 100% perfect - there are times when you might get false SMART Failure reports, but this is rare. If you get a SMART failure warning, there are two things you can try:
1. Check for a firmware update for your drive - this will ensure that the drive isn't producing a "false" report. If no BIOS update is available, then the failure report is probably accurate.
2. Check for a BIOS update for your system. Again, sometimes the BIOS will report a false SMART error - if the BIOS is up-to-date and the sMART error still occurs (even with a drive firmware udpate), then the error is accurate and the drive is failing - time to get a new drive.
One last thing you can try is to download the drive diagnostic utility for your specific drive. Maxtor, Western Digital, and Hitachi (IBM) provide a diagnostic utility that will check the drive and fix "simple" problems. You can download them from their websites:
