Hugh Jackman’s Mantra In ‘Wolverine’ Movie? ‘Consistently Bad-Ass,’ Says Former Fox Exec

Sure, any comic book fan worth his longboxes knows that Wolverine is the best there is at what he does — but will his upcoming debut as a solo act in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” live up to the hype? Former 20th Century Fox exec (and comic book author) Jeff Katz, who returned from the set of “Wolverine” just a few months ago, certainly seems to think so, bub.

“I think it delivers — so I’m not particularly worried about that,” Katz told MTV, only to add exactly why he thinks Logan’s upcoming solo debut will be his best story yet.

“I’m of the belief that you can boil down these characters to a couple of key words, phrases or images that sum up the tone and tenor of what they should be,” explained Katz. “And to me and [Hugh] Jackman, our mantra for Wolverine has really been one term: ‘bad-ass.’ As long as Wolverine is consistently bad-ass, people are generally going to go with you. That’s what they want from that character.”

“Iron Man comes out and it does a tremendous business, Batman comes out and it does a tremendous business, and the inclination in the movie biz a lot of the time is, ‘Well, that thing just worked, so we have to chase that,’” continued Katz. “But as comics people know, Batman is not Iron Man is not Superman is not Wolverine — they’re all different.”

According to Katz, it’s that grasp of comics and their characters that informed production of “Wolverine” from the start, and the exec — who left Fox earlier this year for a project he’ll announce any day now — heaped praise upon Jackman for his appreciation of the ol’ Canucklehead.

“Jackman is an actor who gets the character innately. He understands that he owes his career to that character,” said Katz, who added that he’s dead-serious about “Wolverine” showing a side of Logan that’s considerably darker than anything we’ve seen in the “X-Men” films thus far.

“If you saw that Comic-Con trailer, that bit at the end where he tells [Schreiber] he’s going to cut his goddamn head off,” said Katz, “that is very much Logan’s tone throughout the movie.”

“At the end of the day, it’s a more personal ‘X-Men’ movie. It’s a darker X-Men movie,” added Katz.

The former exec was quick to add that, while Jackman is certainly the star of the show, Logan will be joined by quite a few other fanboy-friendly characters who will vie for audience’s attention — characters who could live on outside of “Wolverine.”

“The dynamic between Jackman and Liev Schreiber is excellent, and ultimately informs their arc together, but the fun of this movie is just to freshen it up and get some new faces, in terms of the characters you’re getting to play with — and it does put a few of them in a position to be explored in other areas,” teased Katz. “It nicely sets up a lot of the places for this version of the franchise to go.”

As for exactly what that direction might be, Katz said his status as a former Fox exec limited his knowledge of the studio’s plans for “Wolverine” and the “X-Men Origins” franchises — but he certainly has some ideas about where Logan could be headed post-”Wolverine.”

“I can’t speak to what’s been discussed in the interim since I’ve been gone, but Mr. Jackman certainly has a desire to go to Japan,” said Katz. “As the single most beloved member of the X-Men universe, I have a hard time believing this is the last you’ll see of Wolverine.”

Excited about “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”? Be sure to come back tomorrow for some thoughts on the film from Logan himself, Hugh Jackman! Until then, let us know what you think about Katz’ assessment of the film and what you’re taking from it!

Wolverine Trailer Confirmed for December 12!

user posted image

We have officially confirmed with 20th Century Fox that the first trailer for Wolverine will hit theaters with the studio's The Day the Earth Stood Still on December 12. The trailer will be exclusively available in theaters and will not debut online or on TV until some time later. Be sure to check your local paper or online for theater listings!

Directed by Gavin Hood, the May 1, 2009 release stars Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds, Taylor Kitsch, Will.i.am, Danny Huston, Dominic Monaghan, Daniel Henney and Lynn Collins.

Leading up to the events of X-Men, Wolverine tells the story of Wolverine's epically violent and romantic past, his complex relationship with Victor Creed, and the ominous Weapon X program. Along the way, Wolverine encounters many mutants, both familiar and new, including surprise appearances by several legends of the X-Men universe.

Wolverine Claws Onto Empire's Cover

user posted image

Everyone’s been so excited about this year’s Iron Man, and the Avenger themed follow-ups that are coming, we’ve almost forgotten completely about the mutant side of Marvel’s super-hero universe. Next year will see the X-Men franchise continue with X-Men Origins: Wolverine hitting theaters. Fortunately, Empire Magazine hasn’t forgotten about the muties, and is giving Hugh Jackman the cover treatment for its January issue.

Along with gracing the cover with claws and mutton chops, Jackman gives some insight as to what fans can expect from the X-Men prequel: "There's a scene in the first X-Men movie, where Wolverine's introduced in a bar, fighting in a cage, and you felt that he did this every night of his life. If this movie is successful, you should feel that this guy can walk straight off the end of this film and into that bar.”

Jackman isn’t the only one talking for the cover article. The magazine also talks to some of the other cast members, including Danny Huston, who plays a younger version of William Stryker, the character played by Brian Cox in X-Men 2. His comments on the character, and his conflicted reaction to the existence of mutants, sounds right on par with the character we saw in the second X-Men flick. ” The thing about Stryker is that he feels like he's got this God-given right, that he's on a crusade. He both loves and hates mutants, because his son was a mutant and murdered his wife. So he understands what they're going through but despises their force, their potential danger. It's wonderfully complicated."

Just this little tidbit is enough to remind me why we liked the X-Men movies… at least the first two of the franchise (here’s hoping Wolverine will follow in the footsteps of Bryan Singer’s movies). For more information on this prequel, check out the January issue of Empire Magazine.

Hugh Jackman On Bringing ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ Back For A Sequel…In Japan

Fresh off being named “Sexiest Man Alive” by People Magazine, Hugh Jackman has a lot to be thankful for these days. His epic Baz Luhrmann film “Australia” hits theaters today, and he’s returning to the big screen as one of comics’ most popular superheroes, Wolverine, in next year’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”

In the following video, Jackman explains to MTV that there are plenty of surprises left for the “Wolverine” audience, and not only tells us that he’d like to do another film, but teases the story he’d like to tell.

“The most intriguing thing to me was the Japan story. I love the Japan story,” said Jackman. “I wanted to do the Japan story from around ‘X-Men 2.’ Can you just picture Wolverine in Japan with the triads and the samurai? It’s just genius.”

Why wasn’t that story told? Jackman had an answer for that, too — one that sounded quite a bit like the answer former Fox exec Jeff Katz gave us when asked about a potential “Wolverine” sequel.

“How can you do that before you explain his origins?” said Jackman. “If we tried to mix the origin and Japan together, it wouldn’t do justice to either. So you can tell by the answer where I’d like it to go.”

If you're amped for next summer's WOLVERINE solo flick (oh, sorry -- X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE), keep your Xbox 360 or PS3 ready and waiting -- you'll get the chance to carve your foes and heal gaping battle wounds yourself.

Activision and developer Raven (the team behind past games X-MEN LEGENDS and MARVEL: ULTIMATE ALLIANCE) are hard at work on the digital Logan likeness and his lethal mutantness. The game is set for release in May 2009 to coincide with the movie's release (that's some kind of screenshot, concept art or cutscene graphic from the game above). Maybe they'll also find a way to work Mystique in the game somewhere, to satiate my blue-chick fetish.

Details, per press release: "We have an amazing team with Raven Studios at the helm, creating what will undoubtedly be the quintessential, true-to-character Wolverine video game experience that fans have been craving," said Rob Kostich, vice president, global brand management, Activision Publishing, Inc. "X-Men Origins: Wolverine amps up the action by bringing to life Wolverine's wholly unique skills such as his brute strength, regenerative mutant abilities, and indestructible adamantium claws and skeleton in an immersive experience that is fitting to one of the most enduring and popular characters of all time."

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is an epic action-adventure featuring a true-to-character Wolverine gameplay experience that takes gamers through and beyond the movie's storyline. Set in a variety of vivid real-world locales, the title challenges players to hone their animal instinct as they uncover hidden dangers, hunt and destroy enemies, and take on seemingly insurmountable situations while discovering the truth about Wolverine's tragic past. With razor-sharp adamantium claws unsheathed, the future X-Man enacts lightning-quick combat, evasive maneuvers, in-depth combo attacks, and an array of brutal finishing moves. Wolverine doesn't just deliver massive damage, either -- he also takes it, thanks to his mutant regenerative power that heals him in real time right before the player's eyes.

Extra Tidbit: In the X2 tie-in game WOLVERINE'S REVENGE, Wolvie was voiced by Mark Hamill. Of course.

Wolvie's mutant pals!

Now that the trailer for X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE is online, we can finally start to get a better look at all the mutants from the X-Men Universe who will be making appearances! I went through a HD version of the trailer frame-by-frame and grabbed as many Marvel characters as I could and I've compiled them below with a little information on each...

SABRETOOTH
user posted image

Real Name: Victor Creed
Powers: Sabretooth's primary mutant power is an accelerated healing factor that enables him to regenerate damaged or destroyed tissue with far greater speed and efficiency than an ordinary human.  He possesses superhumanly acute senses of sight, hearing, smell, and taste - although perhaps not of touch - comparable to those of certain animals, allowing him to track prey similar to the way dogs and wolves do. Currently, Sabretooth's entire skeleton has been artificially infused with the, virtually indestructible, alloy known as Adamantium.

SILVER FOX
user posted image

Real Name: Silver Fox
Powers: Silver Fox was a mutant whose superhuman powers were never revealed. She received age suppression treatments from the Weapon X Program, causing her to age slowly, if at all, over a period of decades. She also allegedly possessed a healing factor distilled from Wolverine’s. Silver Fox was an experienced markswoman and a highly trained hand-to-hand combatant.

DEADPOOL
user posted image

Real Name: Wade Wilson
Powers: Deadpool possesses a superhuman healing factor derived from that of the mutant Wolverine that allows him to regenerate damaged or destroyed areas of his cellular structure at a rate far greater than that of an ordinary human.  Deadpool is an extraordinary hand-to-hand combatant and is skilled in multiple unarmed combat techniques. He is a master of assassination techniques, is an excellent marksman, and is highly skilled with bladed weapons.

GAMBIT
user posted image

Real Name: Remy LeBeau
Powers: Gambit has the mutant ability to tap into the potential energy contained within an object and transform it into kinetic energy upon touching it. When Gambit thus charges an object and throws it at a target, the object releases this energy explosively on impact.

AGENT ZERO
user posted image

Real Name: Christoph Nord
Powers: Agent Zero is a mutant who can absorb the kinetic energy of an impact within certain limits without injury to himself. Zero must then release the energy he absorbs and can channel it as blasts of concussive-corrosive energy via an acidic enzyme secreted from his fingertips. Agent Zero is a deadly hand-to-hand combatant, a precision marksman, and an expert in covert operations and demolitions.

BLOB
user posted image

Real Name: Frederick "Fred" J. Dukes
Powers: The Blob could create a mono-directional gravity field extending five feet from his center of balance, rendering himself virtually immovable as long as he was in contact with the ground. His body has superhuman strength and durability; the fat tissues can absorb the impact of bullets, cannonballs, and even missiles.

JOHN WRAITH
user posted image

Real Name: John Wraith
Powers: Wraith has the ability to seemingly appear and disappear at will. He uses "shaped charges," bombs whose blasts are precisely controlled.

EMMA FROST
user posted image

Real Name: Emma Frost
Powers: Emma Frost is a mutant who possesses various telepathic talents. Emma can read minds and project her thoughts into the minds of others, project psionic force bolts which have no physical effects but which can affect a victim's mind so as to cause the victim pain or unconsciousness, and can also induce mental pain merely by touching the brow of her victim. Furthermore, as a consequence of continued mutation, Emma can now transform her skin and hair into a diamond-hard form at will.

So the official website for Marvel's upcoming X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE has come online and it's understandably bare bones right now. There's the logo, a countdown clock and the trailer. The film, of course, tells the story of how Logan aka Wolverine came to be the unpredictable, adamantium infused berserker we all know and love. Click through to check it out. Wolvie faces off against Sabretooth and a myriad of Weapon X superheroes on May 1st.

Extensive WOLVERINE Reshoots Are Happening

user posted image

Sources have informed us that Fox is conducting extensive re-shoots for "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", some or all of those re-shoots in Vancouver.  And by "extensive" we're not talking about a few days of pick-ups.  More curious was the studio considered bringing in a few journalists to cover these re-shoots.  Now usually re-shoots such as this are done quietly.  Studios don't want you to know they done f***ed up and can't get their shit together in the editing room.

As for the production, everyone (and by "everyone", I mean the world of online film journalists) knows that Gavin Hood was not getting to make the movie he wanted while on set.  There have been reports of Fox basically going around Hood and micro-managing like they always do.  Example: some sets were re-painted because it's what the execs wanted, not what Hood wanted.

user posted image

There have also been many leaked reports that Richard Donner was on the set in some capacity while they were filming.  Some in the online world have speculated that Mr. Donner was doing more than just standing around, casting long, adoring gazes at Taylor Kitsch (although he can hardly be faulted if that was the case).  We can neither confirm nor substantiate these claims about Donner since we weren't there and we don't know.  But with Gavin Hood helming the re-shoots, Fox and Hood must have come to an understanding and are clearly trying to salvage one of the summer tent-poles of 2009.  Let's hope that Fox is spending all this money to finally give fans the movie that they've been clamoring for.

This all leads to the big question: What the hell kind of "Wolverine" movie are they making?  Is it f***ING EPIC like the trailer?  Is it a softer, perhaps sillier comic book movie like "Fantastic 4"?  Or is it true to the bad-ass character of the comics that fans have loved ever since he was introduced back in 1974?  Fans want a dark, gritty "Wolverine" movie because that's what the character is.  Those adamantium claws aren't for back scratches, they're for back impalements.  If "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" is closer to the "PG" side of the tracks than the hard-"PG-13" side where fans want it, then the movie will open huge but when those other big summer releases come along, it will disappear like all off Fox's movies last year.

The Day the Earth Stood Still
Marley & Me

Other than "Marley & Me", this is the gang that couldn't shoot straight.  The quality of these films ranges from mediocre to holocaust.  It is one of the worst slates in recent memory and Fox needs to do something and they need to do it with "Wolverine".

user posted image

"Wolverine" is important for multiple reasons: first, if "Wolverine" doesn't go over well, then not only do sequels for that character go away, but other potential spin-offs, such as Deadpool and Gambit and other mutants, also vanish.  Second, if Fox screws over a character as popular as "Wolverine", then compounded with the ill-will garnered by their behavior with "Watchmen", the geek community will have their biggest punching bag since George Lucas.  Every film that tries to appeal to the coveted 18-34 male demographic will be an uphill battle in terms of marketing and getting that demo excited.

So with these re-shoots, as with any re-shoots, Fox is trying to "fix" the problem.  Granted, the problem seems to be their own doing, but at least they're trying to hit the undo-button.  Hence, that's why journalists might be invited to the set during the re-shoots—to show everyone how Fox is trying to make good on this movie.  Fox is going to spend millions more to make the movie they were supposed to make in the first place.

user posted image

Sounds great, right?  Fox may have finally pulled its head out of its ass.  I know I'm giving 20th Century Fox a lot of shit but look at that list of films again.  A good handful of those films aren't just bad or forgettable.  They're abominations in the eyes of the Lord.

We contacted Fox before running this story to get their comments.  Their response is that these shoots were always planned and are intended to capture specific weather conditions.  Personally, I think it's better if they're trying to turn a corner in the way they're planning to make movies, but "weather conditions" is their official reasoning for these shoots in Vancouver.

So if Fox is turning a corner, then more power to them.  I want to see a great "Wolverine" movie as much as you do.  But trust isn't earned overnight and we'll keep following leads and talking to sources to see if Fox can redeem itself with this highly-anticipated movie.

Email from Hugh Jackman regarding WOLVERINE reshoots!

Hey folks, Harry here... Apparently Hugh tried to send this to me yesterday. I never received his email. Today, a concerned fairy godmother connected loosely between myself and the man-god Hugh Jackman, tells me that apparently I'm ignoring an email from Hugh Jackman. Interesting... so we begin a series of communications via another party between Hugh and I... and sure enough we discover that I can not get mail from FOX.COM. Apparently they can't send out to me, yet I can mail in. INTERESTING. Suffice to say, we worked out the tech angles and I got the email and the picture from Hugh.

Now, before we go on to this - you should know that officially this is what is happening. You won't hear from any official source the problems that have occurred on this film. That said, there is very very good news. DARK KNIGHT's rather phenomenal success is helping the creatives behind WOLVERINE to unleash the sort of Wolverine that we're hoping for, let's hope for the best, cuz honestly wouldn't we all want an amazing WOLVERINE movie... set in Japan... ahem. HELLFIRE CLUB... well, if we are ever to see any of that - this one has to work. Let's hope that the work in frozen Vancouver will do exactly that.

Hey Mate- Would you mind posting this? Thank you for your support! HJ

Hey everyone -

It's Hugh Jackman, sending this note from freezing Vancouver. I have read a lot of your online comments regarding the footage that we are currently shooting and I share your passion for the Wolverine character and the movie - I owe it all to you guys!

I wanted to reach out and let you know that due to scheduling conflicts with certain cast members and location/weather considerations, we had to wait until now to shoot a couple of scenes. Please rest assured that WOLVERINE will be badass and hopefully meet all of your expectations. I am stoked by the positive response to the teaser, which clearly reflects the tone and scope of the film. If you like that, we've got much more in store!

In the meantime, here's an exclusive shot of some characters you may recognize...

Cheers,

Hugh

IESB Exclusive: X-Men Origins: Wolverine Update! More Deadpool Added!

Thanks to IESB reader DPfan (I am assuming he didn't think real hard about that handle – it means Deadpool fan right?) we've learned exclusively that more footage of the DEADPOOL character played by Ryan Reynolds has been added to the X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE film!

We are told Ryan Reynolds was busy a guy in Vancouver during the extra time the production spent there shooting some added footage for his Deadpool character! Apparently most of the footage shot included Reynolds and Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman.

This isn't your mother's cameo...Deadpool is full on! Reynolds will appear in the film even more than originally planned!

Reynolds beefed up a la Blade Trinity for the role of the antihero to play opposite Jackman's Wolverine. The Merc with a Mouth can't have wimpy girlie arms next to that guy!

IESB has contacted 20th Century Fox for confirmation, will update if we hear anything so check back!

This healing factor also affords Deadpool a virtual immunity to poisons and most drugs, as well as an enhanced resistance to diseases and an extended life span. Unlike Wolverine’s natural healing factor, Deadpool’s is mentally driven to a partial extent.

Due to the presence of this superhuman healing ability, many of Deadpool's natural physical attributes have been enhanced. His natural strength, agility and reflexes have been enhanced to levels that are beyond the natural limits of the human body. Deadpool's agility and reaction time are superior to those of even the finest human athlete.

First Wolverine TV Spot: Outcasts

user posted image

Fox aired the first of it’s special new, X-Men Origins: Wolverine TV spots during Family Guy tonight. This first one, entitled “Outcasts” focused in particular on Wolverine’s childhood, and did a pretty good job of hinting around at the notion that they’re setting Sabretooth and Wolverine up as brothers. Also, it’s worth noting that a man who appears to be Wolverine’s father, bears a very strange resemblance to Sabertooth, right down to the haircut.

Watch the first of Fox’s three X-Men Origins: Wolverine TV spots below. They’ll air the other two this coming Monday and Tuesday night.

20th Century Fox aired the second of three announced 60-second television sports for X-Men Origins: Wolverine. You can watch the first titled “Outcasts” , which aired during Family Guy at this link. The second spot which premiered tonight during House, is titled “Brothers”. The story begins after the first clip, where Wolverine and his kid brother run away from home and find themselves at War. The third spot will air on on Tuesday (February 17th) during American Idol. I have a feeling that the third spot is going to ruin some of the film’s climax… I could be wrong. Watch “X-Men Origins: Wolverine - Brothers” after the jump.

The third spot which premiered tonight during American Idol is titled “Legends” and set-ups the team of Mutants that Wolverine joins along his journey: Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Taylor Kitsch as Gambit and Tim Pocock as a young Cyclops. I think it’s kinda funny that Fox tried to do a spin-off film and has resorted into selling it based on the other X-Men “cameos”. Watch “Legends” after the jump

2 French Wolverine Posters

Fox has released two new French posters for X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Or is it Le Wolverine over there? Croissant Claws maybe? There, I’ve officially exhausted all of my French.

The first one has Wolverine pissed off because god has decided to rain on his picnic. The second one seems to be trying to show us what it looks like when Wolverine shaves. He doesn’t even use a mirror! No wonder Logan always looks so scruffy.

Final Wolverine Trailer and Character Photos Revealed

user posted image

20th Century Fox has released six new character photos and the final movie trailer from X-Men Origins: Wolverine on USA Today. The photos include Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Liev Schreiber as Victor Creed/Sabretooth, Lynn Collins as Kayla Silverfox, Taylor Kitsch as Gambit, Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Will.i.am as Kestrel.

The new trailer concentrates a lot on the story bits shown in the Fox 3-minute preview, with a lot more action from the additional mutants, and nearly every effects shot from the film cut into a fast montage. I think I even saw some footage from the recently filmed reshoots. Check out the trailer after the jump and tell me what you think in the comments!

They say that all legendary figures are the creation of great tragedy and perseverance. But what about Santa Claus? Imagine, if you can, Santa Claus as a superhero, out for vengeance. Imagine, if you will, a movie trailer mash-up featuring The Santa Clause and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Imagine, no more. You can watch the real origin story of Santa Claus, after the jump.
