GL, RM114 transferred 15min ago. Thx.
Added on September 21, 2008, 8:51 pm QUOTE(ccschua @ Sep 21 2008, 06:33 PM) Today did some upgrade for the ZERO DAC. Hi Chua, sounds like a good upgrade! Where can we buy this RCA and silver cable for our upgrade?First thing I do, remove the original Gucci RCA and replace with the RCA (free gift from Mr He). Next put the connecting wire using Silver cable. This tiny silver cable is thinner than hair and so flimsy. Next solder a wire to the RCA ground and connect OPA earth ground to this wire. Put on the volume, connect the Volex 17604 (corrected to British polarity) and off the ZERO dac sings. I was like 'shock' and awe and my jaw was wide open. The sound is more transparent with very good imaging. Worth my day. When the OPA ground is not connected, I measured some running AC voltage of about 0.15V (floating voltage). Connecting it to ground force it to zero. I prefer to connect the OPA ground to the RCA ground (not to the chasis ground). I notice that you didn't do the BA caps mod to your OPA... is that because you're not using the extension cable? As always, thanks for sharing all these valuable info! Chua, thanks! Yes, the Neutrik RCA socket at farnell is really cheap at RM6.50 each. I wonder what's available at Octave so I don't have to wait for shipping. I was told they moved to a bungalow house near Amcorp Mall, is that correct?
GL, yes, I agree Silver would place a bit more emphasis on treble. I prefer to have something more neutral like copper. The Neotech cable looks good actually! Take Five Audio also have Cardas Female RCA connectors for CAN$10.95 per pair. Vampire Cryo treated RCA is CAN$16.95. Quite a bit more than Neutrik but I wonder if it's worth it since gonna DIY once and then use for years... Or maybe can check if can bulk from Audio-GD if they're cheaper? Abel, how does it sound now after burn in? I'm actually arranging to buy the IeGO cable coz they're Cryo treated and have very good review comparable with US$300 cable. But I still need 1 cable for my conditioner... unless I change my wall plate to US-type also... |

QUOTE(GodLuvSxS @ Sep 22 2008, 11:51 AM) I think the Neotech should be quite good! OCC copper reported to be detailed yet musical! I think if possible go for copper based RCA female, those two u mentioned are brass based, based on theory the electric conductivity of copper is better than brass, best bang for the buck copper based rca female would be CMC brand - Model 805F, around USD10 per pair Vampire has a model that's made using OFC Copper but cost a lot more at CAN$23.95! The CMC at US$10 per pair is a good price comparatively. |

QUOTE(eddylws @ Sep 25 2008, 12:02 AM) Hi RAV4, Thanks for the tips Eddy, and welcome to this thread! Switchcraft sounds like just what I need. It's always nice to have experienced Sifu drop in on us with guidance. Octave have Switchcraft RCA which is very good for CD, AMP or DAC, if is not misstaken is RM35 - RM40 per pic, Is you looking for better one you ask the Boss (Mr.Yap) to order the ETI RCA for you the RCA cause RM180 per pair. Switchcraft RCA is much Natural & warm. ETI RCA is more to Clearn, Dynamic, and fast signal pass to. It is depend what is lack out from your system, that is nothing is better and better, event you can use back your original RCA and change the signal cable to sliver or pure copper cable. that will give you alot improvement already. Thanks Eddy Lim |

QUOTE(abel @ Sep 24 2008, 06:58 PM) i got lubang to get Van Den Hul Royal Jade in quite good price ... RM 100 per meter u can check at outside the price i think is RM 130 per meter hurry while stock last hheheh I've checked online, got a pretty good review but comparatively the CS-122 is overall a more balanced cable. Family resemblance is there... no point for me to change my CS-122 then. this cable give u a Plenty of detail and excitement. Soundstage is nice and deep and treble is never harsh or rough. A great upgrade for the budget restricted. Added on September 29, 2008, 10:12 pmGL, since Chua's upgrade using Audio-GD's RCA is so positive and you are ordering so many Moons, why don't you check with Kingwa on the cost of the RCA and we just get it from him as well? Then we can try Eddy's Oyaide 4N copper! This post has been edited by RAV4: Sep 29 2008, 10:12 PM |

The board on second link even has the clock crystal and DAC chip isolated from vibration.this are few DAC from this DIY Online shop http://shop.hifidiy.net/product/227.htm http://shop.hifidiy.net/product/120.htm http://shop.hifidiy.net/product/50.htm (i bough the TDA 5141 OPA out put is RM380 & TDA541 tube is RM 420) http://www.lite8.com/ http://www.pacificvalve.us/LITEDAC50.html ( i bought this with RM470, I think no more production) This all are very good design. Eddy Eddy, I didn't know there are other better DACs out there at this price point. So far those I've come across are all higher cost than Zero by almost double. But these are in KIT form that's why they're cheap rite? Wish I can read Mandarin tho... thanks for sharing! This post has been edited by RAV4: Sep 29 2008, 11:49 PM |

QUOTE(GodLuvSxS @ Sep 30 2008, 09:18 PM) I will try to "persuade" audio gd to send some as free gift LOL If not, I will consider paying for it since it's manufacture by CMC, quality is there GL, looks like it's posted on it's website that it will be freebee... yes, hope we will get it also! Thanks Chua for the info. Eddy mentioned that he has some Oyaide 4N Copper. Those are really high grade cables. Maybe worth while to get those and save on shipping? I'm also more interested in copper. |

Hi Eddy, you're at Old Klang Road? Not a problem for me to go over. GodLuv is in Ipoh though...
BTW, 0.1mm is really thin. Is that sufficient to carry the signal? You obviously have tried it so what's your opinion on it? Also, how much will it cost for enough to link the 2 RCA? Thanks! |

QUOTE(GodLuvSxS @ Sep 30 2008, 03:52 AM) The audio gd's rca female seems to be quite solid, quite be quite bang for the bucks, i will try asking the price. I may go and order the OCC copper cable, anyone want to join? together share share the shipping, shipping from canada to malaysia is abit too expensive I don't mind sharing to get some since it's not expensive. GL, have you checked this out? A bit more expensive than the Take 5 one but I think cryo treated copper can make a difference. http://www.cryo-parts.com/cryopartscu.htmlThe hifidiy mini USB dac is kinda attractive, might consider bring in one unit to review it's market potential Added on September 30, 2008, 10:37 pm QUOTE(eddylws @ Sep 30 2008, 10:05 PM) Hi RAV4 That's very, very kind of you Eddy! Thank you very much before hand.Yes, Old Klang road (Sri sentosa) i dun know how much cost for it, free to charge lah.. cause the thing not cost a lot and i guess 10cm is more then enought for you. Eddy Lim Now, to do such experiments, I wish I have another Zero like Chua... haha. This post has been edited by RAV4: Sep 30 2008, 10:37 PM |

Oh, I'm not scared of the soldering. That's a simple enuf job. But to try and listen, then remove n resolder to compare .1 and .3 is quite cumbersome so having 2 units is useful for comparison. I believe that's also why Chua bought 2? ;-)
Added on September 30, 2008, 11:17 pmEddy, you mentioned about Black Gate caps so I did a search and found that they're indeed very costly and also scarce. Some are like Euro 10 each! So where do you get your stock from? Actually just curious but I think modding BG for Zero is rather extreme? Might end up to cost as much as the unit itself... QUOTE(ccschua @ Oct 22 2008, 12:36 AM) Hi abel, Hi Chua, when you said new power supply and clock, do you mean for Abel's CD73 or for Zero?audio-gd says if u add the new power supply +15V +5V , new audio-gd clock, and any times it is better than original Marantz CD17. [of course u already bypass HDAM] heard u are buying OPA. why not wait for bulk from steve I saw from one of your previous post that you're going to mod your caps. I'm wondering if can also purchase those caps together with you? I think that's the final step to squeeze the rest of SQ from the Zero. Thanks! Chua, I'm interested but the shipping is really murder! Could farnell be a better place to order from as Abel suggested? Will you also be getting the 4x Sanyo OS-CON + 4x PIO bypass as stated under "Worthwhile cost effective subs - the 4 x 100uf 25V caps around the dac chip"?

I've never done mods before so can only depend on those with the experience for suggestions so I'll just wait for Chua to confirm what to get.
Chua, if the total cost is not too much, I'll most probably get 2 set of caps coz I've ordered another Zero from Steve for office use. Can't listen to standard audio output after using Zero on my laptop. :-) |

QUOTE(ccschua @ Nov 3 2008, 10:35 PM) well , this is only phase 1 mod. Hi Chua, if you want, I can share with you to split the shipping since 1 pack has 30 pieces.I almost give up, lucky got abel help. I am more interested into this mod, putting a lot of green sausage underneath the PCB for the power supply bypass. http://cgi.ebay.com/K42Y-2-0-033uF-500V-PI...id=p3286.c0.m14 |
