That's what we call as marketing strategy. Think about it, [For mainstream & n00bs] you bought an MX518, you used it for four years, you love it.

Plus, you know that Logitech engineers already know that the rubber will peel of some day later after a long use, that's why they still stick to the rubber, because they know that one day, the buyer will just buy a new one. Coz not many would do the same as you ian, which refurb the old mouse with a really good idea and design.
