I was working rather late at the new year eve. Since traffic is all jam up, I decided to stay and wait for the count down. The fireworks were taken at my office's root top.
I set the picture mode to faithful and highlight preserve on custom function like usual. It seem the constrast is rather low for most of your taste... I guess it is what i got from the picture mode. Maybe next time can try other mode. All the fireworks were shot on ISO200, and the other street photo is all shot at ISO1600. The noise level on my 40D at ISO1600 is considered ok and acceptable. I had seen those fireworks picture on internet is so clean and perfect without smoke. How did they do that? Or just photoshop power? Because I already can see the smoke with my eyes... and how did they remove that? Is it simply snap always not good enought? Attached thumbnail(s) |

Here are some more...
And my found my 40D autofocus also not perfect... There was one picture attached actually OOF and focus on the float/bubble rather than the subjects. And in general, there are at least 1~2 pictures (in low light) out of 10 still OOF. It is still not as good as the 5D where I can get all pictures perfectly in focus.... As usual, C&C is welcome... TheVoIP....to get clean picture without the smoke, you need to use smaller aperture.

u very bad luck, the smoke blowing towards your direction.. whole klcc nearly covered in smoke, dont think there's much you can do about it, unless u superimpose another klcc on top.. haha..
increasing contrast should help bring out the fireworks This post has been edited by dx_myrddraal: Jan 25 2008, 11:44 AM |

Some I already use up to f16 liao lo... So solution;increasing contrast should help bring out the fireworks (1) Upgrade my luck or pray more before shooting... I actually forgot to pray and it did rain half an hour before the count down begin... (2) I get your idea on super-impose second image... But dunnot how to do la... especially on when the firewoks happen, then I baru re-zoom and re-compose... So a bit hard to get the same clean picture without the fireworks.... I was happen to be in MidValley on Saturday and managed to take some fashion shot, only for one session... The 5:00pm one as I wasn't expecting these... After that, I have to rush to other place with my friend.
As some of you might had pointed out that my compostion suck as usual... it is because I did not bring a tele zoom... and instead shooting with a prime. Some more all picture without cropping or any photoshop... So there are really limitation.... Hope you like it... QUOTE(shinchan^^ @ Jan 28 2008, 10:38 AM) You should be right...But the 5D's 300mm is shorter one... something like 200mm on normal croppping factor camera... Some more they got IS to compensate the shaking... I tried thier camera... really siok... you can see the IS work because shaking already reduced so much on the view finder... |

Hi,
Here is some of my pictures taken at 牛车水 last Sunday. All pictures shot using Canon EOS 40D + ISO1600 + Full Power Flash (No need ETTL nor compensation) + EF100-400 USM IS L where most pictures are at 400mm handheld. All pictures are never cropped nor photoshop as usual. I think the noise control with 40D is pretty good at ISO1600, but my pictures are not as sharp as I used to with 70-200 f2.8 because of the extended focal length and lower shutter speed (around 1/125). If you want, I can post 100% crop picture to show the image noise and sharpness of the lense at this environment. To be frank, I wish I am holding a 1D mark III that time because of the better noise control, which will allow me to use higher shutter speed or close down a bit... Let me know if you guys interested, then I proceed to upload the pictures. As usual, any comments are welcome. Attached thumbnail(s) |

Here is the 100% crop.
I know it is no longer perfect as it was shot at ISO1600, 400mm, f5.6, 1/125 with handheld. I also use flash, set to full power (no need ETTL nor compensation, just pure full power). And yes, flash recycle time is slow... because every shot are full power. I guess it is a good thing that 580 II is the fastest flash gun on market, but still certainly not fast enought. I am thinking to get those tele-concentrator to go further... I guess it is again the equipment limitation.... Ok... I guess this crop is good to show for those interested on investing dSLR and I found Canon 100-400 USM IS L is pretty useful, mainly for its focal length. Attached thumbnail(s) |

Just go to http://www.imageshack.us. Upload the photos there, you can even request them to resize the photo and then copy the link they provide (the ones with the [ IMG] & [ /IMG] tags).

I thought of borrow and use a 300 f2.8, but not sure can handheld long without monopod... Or without zoom might be a headache in composition or not... Anyway, I am not regreting on using the 100-400 IS. The focal length is fantastic! |

You managed to frame the model but it seems very tight crop give more space.. so the picture more comfortable for the viewer |

QUOTE(shinchan^^ @ Mar 3 2008, 03:22 PM) J6-J8 Thanks for your suggestion... I understand what you mean...You managed to frame the model but it seems very tight crop give more space.. so the picture more comfortable for the viewer But that's is my problem of 85mm prime on my 40D... I already distance myself max from the model... and no longer further back liao... I should be using 50mm for such shots... or best, mount the 85mm prime on 5D! |

QUOTE(VincC454 @ Mar 11 2008, 10:46 AM) I agree on that. I actually found my repeating compostion since last year liao...I guess there are few things that limiting my compostion issue; (1) always depends on autofocusing point from my 40D... I should focus and recompose (2) 85mm prime... should try other lenses like 50mm or 70-200... Different focal length sure output various results... |

The 50mm might give you a different perspective. But the 85mm is good
Sharp, nice bokeh and I think all you need to do is break out of your comfort zone. You are going back to the tried and tested because you know it works. Try something different |
