Actually, I not sure that whether this guide have been posted before or not. If yes, please close this thread (thx mods). But after seeing what happen on amd_hardcore's WC set due to pump failure, I think it is better for me to post a simple guide on "How to AUTO Shut Down Your Rig IF Overheated" by using a very simple combo software; Speedfan + Super Fast Shutdown. Personally, I do think this guide is not only for Watercooling user but Air Cooling user too as fans on heatsink do break down too.

Oh ya... I am sure some of you guys going to flame me on saying that "My motherboard can auto shut down too after setting it in bios". But guys, not every motherboard have those functions especially on older motherboard. Besides that, I think there is nothing wrong to have an extra protection for our computer as it is one of most useful and expensive stuff in our house.

Cut the story short. Here its goes..

1. Download Speed Fan (Last stable ver. 4.33: DOWNLOAD LINK)

2. Download Super Fast Shut Down (DOWNLOAD LINK)

3. Install both of the software.

4. Making Speedfan to load during Windows Startup. The easiest way to do this is by adding a shortcut to startup folder. Normally under "C:\Documents and Settings\"Your Computer Name"\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"



5. Determine which temp in Speed Fan reading is your CPU, NB, GPU and so on.
E.g. Temp 1: 27'C is my NB temp, Temp 2: 15'C is my CPU temp, Core: 46'C is my Graphic Card's core temp and so on.



6. Here come the crucial parts.
Click on "Configure" button >> Go to "Events" tab >> By using the information you obtained, you need to fill up those blank space as it is the 'conditions' on when your rig need to auto shut down. Should be piece of cake to people that learn some basic programming before.

7. In order to make things easier to understand, please see the screen shot below as its clearly show my current setting. I have 3 settings for my SpeedFan.

i) IF "Temp2" > "40" execute "C:\Program Files\Super Fast Shutdown\shutdown.exe"
This means when Temp2 (my CPU temp) go over 40'C, SpeedFan will run the Super Fast Shutdown program. Thus, my computer will shut down.

ii) IF "Fan1" < "3500" execute "C:\Program Files\Super Fast Shutdown\shutdown.exe"
This means when Fan1 (my Watercooling MCP655B Pump RPM, yes MCP655B come with RPM wires and I plug it to my CPU fan plug on my motherboard) go below 3500 RPM, SpeedFan will run the Super Fast Shutdown program. Thus, my computer will shut down. This is because MCP655B constantly run at 4300 RPM, so if it is running below that. This means its going to die real soon.

iii) IF "Core" > "75" execute "C:\Program Files\Super Fast Shutdown\shutdown.exe"
This means when Core (my Graphic Cards temp) go over 75'C, SpeedFan will run the Super Fast Shutdown program. Thus, my computer will shut down.

All these setting is set according to my own setup and its only serve as reference. You can play with the numbers to suit your setup and so on. If you need more explanation on all the 'conditions', please go to "The HOW-TO is online at www.almico.com" link at the bottom of "Events" tab.



8. To test your setup, you can set your CPU shut down temp lower (like 20'C in my setup) and full load your computer using program like Orthos (DOWNLOAD LINK)

Huahuahua ......... Lawak of da year, after i install Super Fast Shutdown, I thought hav 2 run 1st to config da setting. When i click it, 'POFF' it shut down.... Super fast plak......

how to get the GPU temp in speedfan??

I thought most of the mobo provide auto power off over certain temperature u set?..

Sort of... Hahaha...

If your GPU have the temp sensor or I should say as long any of your hardware have those sensor, its will pop up in speed fan. If your GPU temp is not on SpeedFan, this means that your GPU dont have one or its already damaged.

E.g. Older generation GTS and GTX have temp sensor for its core and memory but new GTS and GT only have temp sensor for its core.

Like you said, 'MOST' mobo have that but not all. Older board or those real low end mobo dont have those auto shutdown. Anyway, using auto shutdown is sort of a must for a WC user as pump is prone to break down.

and sorry noob question here. I want to know what temperature is "DANGEROUS" for a GC. I see ur guide there right, u put 75C. But, my GC always reach that temp when playing crysis.

do this applies to vista? what software instead if we are using vista?

As long your GC temp dont exceed 100'C, it is still under safe mode. All those latest high end card have high thermal rating. But if possible, try to keep ur temp below 75'C.. I am using stock cooler (waiting for my custom GTS Ramsink) for now and 75'C is good enough for me as I set 100% for the fan and my room is an air cond room

As long you can find those shutdown program that works on Vista, you just install and change the execute path name. Then it is done

Yeah... I know 'most' of the mobo have those option but do you know that sometime those option dont work or dont kick in that fast to prevent your rig from burning especially during pump broke down in a WC cooled rig. I have seen alot of cases in other forum that their rig is damaged due to malfunctioning pump and so on.

i am using intel P35 mobo...The speed fan cant detect my core and fan?..i am using newer beta version.it can detect my core but cannot detect my fan..can help me?..i want to change my processor fan speed...

I suffer overheat problem before, my water cooling pump connector loosen and cause the pump stop function, my pc turn to blue screen and i continue press reset button until my pc can't boot any more then i noticed...the tube connected to the water block become so soft(melted), the cpu temp approximate 90-100C(the main point is i OC my P4 Prescott 3.0Ghz)...luckily the processor is "rock solid", still working now...but the fan speed controller chip fail after that event( i am using asus board, Q-fan can't auto adjust fan speed anymore), probably burned by the heat....

Check all your fan connector. Is it connected to the mobo? If it is connected and you are not getting a reading even when the fan is running, this means that your fan rpm wires or your mobo rpm reading is damaged. But it rarely happen, so please check again.

Did you set ur mobo bios to shut down ur rig when its reach certain temp?

Anyway, luckily nothing major happen to your rig. If you notice it abit later, there is high chances that your tubing will melt and burst and splash all liquid on your hardwares..

irangan i am using same processor as yours...Can i know ur processor temperature after OC and before OC?...And can intel P35 control processor fan speed?...because i ask LYN forum many days edi...no ppl know..I try to use fanspeed to control but it cant and i try to change it bios,after i change it ...it also same..it is automatically configure...got any method to set processor fan speed because my processor fan speed just run at 900+rpm...

Sorry... Cant help you on the fan question cuz i never control my fan using bios. I connect all of it to my Sunbeam fan controller.
