Rumor: Sonic to Exclusively Support Blu-ray Encoding

Inside sources have alerted Blu-ray.com that Sonic Solutions will soon announce that they are dropping HD DVD support on their Scenarist line of professional disc authoring tools. While they will continue to support existing HD DVD customers, focus will now be on generating new business for their Blu-ray encoding solution. No word on whether or not they will also drop HD DVD support on their popular Roxio line of consumer burning software at this time.

As soon as the official press release is distributed, we'll update this post with the official statement from the company regarding their change in policy.

FS Film Goes Blu-ray Exclusive

Another fallout of the Warner announcement, Finnish distributor FS Film will now support Blu-ray exclusively. They currently have distribution rights to titles from many different studios, but appear to focus most of their efforts on releasing Fox titles. Soon after Warner Brothers announced that they would support Blu-ray exclusively this summer, all HD DVD product listings on their website disappeared. It has now been confirmed that they have dropped the format in favor of Blu-ray.

Run Fat Boy Run Announced in UK

Entertainment in Video (EIV) has announced that they will bring the David Schwimmer directed comedy 'Run Fat Boy Run' to Blu-ray on February 18th. No specs have been announced at this time, but extras include audio commentary, deleted scenes, outtakes, bloopers, and the theatrical trailer. No US release date has been given at this time.

Five years ago Dennis (Simon Pegg) was at the altar about to marry Libby (Thandie Newton), his pregnant fiancée. He got cold feet and ran for the hills and he's been going in circles ever since. When Dennis discovers Libby's hooked up with high-flying-go-getter Whit (Hank Azaria), he realizes it's now or never. He enters a marathon to show he's more than a quitter but then finds out just how much sweat, strain and tears it takes to run for 26 miles. Nobody gives him a chance but Dennis knows this is his only hope to more than a running joke.

National Geographic Goes Blu-ray Exclusive

user posted image

National Geographic has confirmed that they will only be releasing high definition titles on the Blu-ray format. The decision to go format exclusive comes after Warner Brothers, the company which distributes their content, decided to go Blu-ray exclusive earlier this month. While no official press release will be issued on the subject by National Geographic, all future releases will fall under this new policy.

The first title to fall under this new policy will be the April release of 'Sharkwater' which should get officially announced soon. National Geographic is the latest studio to switch to Blu-ray exclusivity, and the third to do so under the Warner umbrella (joining ranks with New Line and HBO). The only Warner holdout left is BBC, who remains format neutral and will continue to release on both formats.

The only National Geographic high definition release thus far has been 'Relentless Enemies', which was released almost a year ago. Hopefully, with the format war finally ending, we'll see more content from the legendary company.

Confirmed: Sonic Scenarist to be Exclusively Blu-ray

user posted image

As we reported yesterday, Sonic Solutions has announced that their Professional Products Group will now focus its research and development on the creation of applications for Blu-ray authoring. Sonic will now work to create new tools to make use of BD-Live interactivity. Previously, Scenarist had support for HD DVD authoring as well, but will now cease sales of that product line.

Rolf Hartley, senior vice president and general manager of Sonic's Professional Products Group commented, "Our professional authoring customers are actively engaged with expanding their services in advanced interactive and online content creation. With a focus on Blu-ray Disc, we're able to meet this demand with new technologies and applications that leverage the growing-capabilities of the robust BD format to deliver dynamic entertainment experiences that consumers not only want, but have also come to expect from today's connected-content platforms."

Additionally, Sonic will offer customers who purchased their Scenarist HD DVD authoring applications a special promotion to exchange their current software for the Blu-ray system. Those who choose to keep their existing HD DVD software will continue to receive customer support.

Sonic Scenarist is a widely used set of video authoring tools used by consumers and professionals alike. This shift in policy on amplifies the huge swing in support the Warner announcement has garnished in only a few short weeks.

And the best movies always come from those 2 production studios wink.gif
*
Always? I disagree. Each studio has their own great movies. Just look back at your Blu-ray collection for proof. biggrin.gif

And great classic movies from Universal like Back To The Future, Jurassic Park, Jaws, E.T. etc has not even released on any hi-def disc format. Same with Paramount with Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan (practically all Spielberg's movies since DreamWorks). So we're not really losing anything as far as great classic movies concerned. nod.gif

If you look back, there are only two Spielberg movies released on hi-def, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and The Twilight Zone: The Movie (Sony & Warners). And they're on Blu-ray. So I think we'll only see Spielberg's films from Universal on hi-def only when Universal switch to Blu-ray, or at least neutral. thumbup.gif

But that day, a Mat Salleh bought The Simpsons Movie BD from there. Seems like some people find that RM149 still cheap for a BD.

LOL! Last Saturday I bought the most expensive BD ever!

I was with the missus, just looking around at Speedy.

She saw "The Devil Wears Prada" BD, and within seconds, it was already on the cashier's desk!

REGION C
Asia (except South East Asia and Pacific).

DVD

REGION 1
North America only

REGION 2
Japan, Middle-East including South Africa and Europe including Greenland

REGION 3
South East Asia including HK

REGION 4
Australasia and South America

REGION 5
USSR, South Asia and Africa.

So for DVD movies, yes it depends on where you buy the PS3. For Blu-ray, should be OK.

Try to avoid movies from regions other than the above.

But not all Blu-ray movies got region coding, usually only for new titles, when some other regions may still screening in cinemas.

DVDs almost all movies got region coding.

Sorry to say, but yes. You need to buy an upscaling DVD player for those Region 1 titles.

Or you can get US version PS3, can play both Region A BDs and Region 1 DVDs. But not region 3 DVDs of course. tongue.gif

Usually you look for title first right? But in this young stage of BD movies, look for PQ and AQ first, only then look for your favorite title.

When the BD transfer is matured, like DVD now, I think we won't have to worry much about PQ and AQ anymore. biggrin.gif

hey guys, i'm just joined the BD group~~~
Just back from bangkok holidays today, bought Spiderman trilogy, POTC world's end, Ratatooille, Pixar Short Film n Casino Royale for RM760. dunno consider cheap, normal or expensive?
*
That's good price man!!!! thumbup.gif

Here you'll have to pay RM150 per title, and I think the Spider-Man trilogy itself is about RM400 (not sure, correct me if I'm wrong! tongue.gif ).

Because there are many joing the HD world now, and many is asking, I'll try to find some time to write up something on how to order from Amazon, best price, BOGO, etc. wink.gif
