Hi! I'm new here. I recently bought a COMPAQ PRESARIO Notebook , model F731AU and I have installed all the drivers. The main problem now is I do not hear sounds (except sound system -BEEPS) and my I am not able to play music, or recording sounds .

My audio driver is Conexant HD-Audio SmartAudio 221,(sp 37789)(downloaded from HP website). It is stated to be working properly in Sounds & Audio Settings in Contral Panel, but I don't hear anything ,except the BEEPS.

> I have tried re- installing the audio driver, No Changes
> I have also tried to install other CONEXANT AUDIO DRIVERS that might be compatible with my audio hardware ,such as Conexant Audio Driver (32-bit)(sp35940), other previous versions (sp33543,sp37981 ,and etc.) ,but - No Changes also!

I'm currently using Windows XP SP2 , and I read from other sources that this notebote model is designed for Vista only.

So, if anyone here has been through this problem for this notebook and has resloved this audio problem ,or if anyone who knows how to fix this problem, please help me out!!!

the yellow icon means the driver for the audio is not installed properly. have you un-installed all the previous audio driver before installing the driver i gave you?

Attached Image trinityz , I tried to install using your drive but it came out like this ( I have no audio device at that time).

That is also what happened when I tried to install the audio software from the given cd.

I think my Windows have been updated before, I think it's the incompatibility of the driver to my audio hardware, cos many owners of this notebook model are also having this problem. And ,I am also one of them. sad.gif

From your link , I read the post ,but don't really understand the whole thing ,especially

''To get all the XP drivers downloaded & installed required only about half a dozen inf file edits. But most of the driver installs were just stock package downloads.

The only items requiring inf edits were the 3 Conexant HD audio & modem packages, and the Nvidia SMBus & wired NIC drivers.

There are no "other" or "unsupported" devices listed in my device manager ''

Can you explain to me briefly ,what should I do?

u definitely installed the wrong driver.
i had the same problem with my asus laptop before. hd audio with microsft qfe installed properly but no sound. even the atheros wifi driver installed properly but can detect any router around.
after a hard time searching for the driver online, finally managed to get it done.
google up for suitable driver, or you may used other driver mean for acer laptop with same specs. in fact, my atheros wifi was using driver provided by acer.

I got this fixed on my in-law laptop, got from net and it works with me.

download here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwar...3180330&lang=en

Install MS UAA first (sp32646.exe) with a reboot before install Conexant driver (sp34386.exe).

If you get an error when installing...force install the conexant sound drivers.

Extract sp34386.exe to C:\Swsetup\sp34386

go to Device Manager>Audio on HD

Right click, Update Driver

Say "no, not at this time" for connecting to Windows Update

Install from a list or specific location

Don't search I will choose the driver to install

In the list of common hardware types, scroll down and select Sound, Video, and Game controllers

Remove the check from "Show Compatible Hardware" and click on "Have Disk"

Next...browse to C:\Swsetup\sp34386

Choose the "inf" and ignore any protest from XP

Hope that'll help!!

Sorry for my long absence .I've been very busy late with work and I have not solve this issue yet.

UPDATE of mhy current LAPTOP situation ,since I started this post .
YES, i can hear the audio now :-but
there still 2 problems unsolved.

1) The mute problem is going on . When i plug my head to the lap top, there is still sound from my laptop speakers. But if I mute it manually thru Sounds and Audio Settings in control panel ,then both laptop speaker and heatset have no sound.

2) my internal microphone is not working .it can detect any noises from outside. Under the volume setting ,the playback entry is grey in colour,. Under Sounds and audio Settings in Control Panel,I cannot adjust the advanced settings of the audio input(microphone) . You can view the screen shot below.

So,if anyone has a permenant solution ,please reply in this post!!!!IT'S BEEN FEW MONTHS ALREADY!!!

this issue till now have no proper solution even from HP.b4 or after this post, many forumer stil post up to ask the same problem and the sugestion i gave them is stil same.there 2 way.1 upgrade back to vista and use the driver provided oficialy by HP.this wil solve the issue once and for all.2ndly use USB sound.then u can hear through headset and record through microphone.until today...HP stil don`t want or even haven write the proper driver for this sound driver to use in XP.regards rclxms.gif
