Am curious is there any difference in owning a share from stockmarket & owning shares as a shareholder?

Shareholder gets annual dividends while also have the option to buy/sell their shares but do owning shares from stockmarket provide dividends or you can just buy & sell your share for profits?

Can you enter the board if you become a major shareholder by buying alot in the market?

If we want dividend how do we get it or the company will automatic transfer dividends into your account?

afaik owning a share from stockmarket means u r a shareholder la...

not all shares pay divvy~~ u can buy to get divvy and also sell the shares for profit.. or even both... your choice

Can you enter the board if you become a major shareholder by buying alot in the market?

you are a major shareholder if u have enough $$ to buy 5% of a company's issued shares tongue.gif... if u r really interested u can contact
their IR and do off-market deals.. maybe they'll give u some discount... laugh.gif

currently they will send chqeue to your address if u are using Direct CDS and bank in to your Nominee acc if you are using Nominee account. Transfer divvy into ur banking account is being implemented and will start by 1st september 2010

wanna ask if i bought the share at 0.40 and sold it two years later at 1.10; then in between there was two cash dividends of 0.05 and 0.10; how do i calculate the total return of this stock? any idea?

Is it [(1.10-0.40)+0.05+0.10]/ 0.40 x 100 = 212.5%

if the company gives out a net stock dividend of 2%, do we also add this 2% into the 212.5%, giving it a return

[(1.10-0.40)+0.05+0.10]/ 0.40 x 100 + 2% = 214.5% ?

Thanks. smile.gif

lanusb, the volume is the amount of stock trade, either buy or sell. Normally high volume trades are caused by institution tradings.

Added on May 5, 2010, 11:54 amevery company that you choose should pass the technical and fundamental analysis.

and theoretically speaking, let's say that we have a high volume trading event today, you would wanna be involve before the day. That way you can benefit the most because high volume trades will drives the stock prize dramatically. I'm speaking of intraday trading btw.

I suggest you read more into the stock market before jumping in. Volume itself is not indicative of how good a stock is, all it shows that it has the market's attention for the day. High volume does not mean good or bad.

Question: How do analysts, or experienced investors like yourselves, get information beyond the Quarterly/Annual report?

For example, I read in newspaper that analysts would say company XYZ will win a new contract, or company ABC's plant utilization has increased to 75%. How do they know? Did they call the management or maybe visit their factories, etc? I wonder how do small players like me can get such information.

There is a difference between an insider investor and normal traders. Insider trader can get first hand information from the company he/she invests, relatives and friends hence can benefits from this person getting the information. We call this the whisper numbers. Some institution will do research and analysis on certain company and will come up numbers, predicting the profits and losses of the company. This is called the consensus report/estimate.

However don't be fool by these numbers, because they can be manipulated. I'm not saying it's always wrong, but you have to be careful, because people like to play the "buy on the rumors, sell on the news" game. So regardless the whisper numbers or consensus estimates being right, or wrong, the game is still not going away. They can always feed the wrong information if they wanted to.

you have to do manual research to know about a company's ties and deals.

roughly speaking negative PE means the company is losing money, this does not determine the company is doing bad. There's much to be considered than just PE.

You can get a lot of information when the company does analysts briefing and factory visits. Usually the management will be more open to answer more personal questions, and sometimes they may 'leak' certain info during the conversation. Or you can organise a group of high profile investors, fund managers to visit the company and usually they are happy to accept u. And who knows, they may even offer u some private placement shares 15% below market price. Unfortunatekt for small investors, u just have to make friends or tag along with bigger players to get the info.

Some listed company got periodically analyst briefing which is part of company transparancy and effort to win or attract investors especially for large instituitional investors.

There is no such thing of negative PE.

If company is not making any profit aka loss, then there shouldn't be any PE at all. Putting a negative PE is somehow not right, should just blank the PE part.

Customers somehow a more confidential issue, but cashflow statement (overall) is available on the financial report so does debt which appeal in the company balance sheet.

Cashflow statement is one of most important factor which investors should be aware of.
