I was trying to look for a FS that can match Damien's size, when I found this goliath jumping spider instead.  drool.gif  Its really huge and I think it maybe the biggest species found in Singapore.

I can't find any detail of Goliath in the net. The nearest match is the Biting Jumping Spider from Australia, but the body length from that site stated 10mm.  http://www.geocities.com/brisbane_spiders/...mpingSpider.htm

I measured just the bodylength of Goliath (minus the legs), its 13mm.

Its quite docile, and willing to explore my hands without any coaxing needed..

Last pic is the size comparision of Goliath vs Damien..... hmm.gif

Caught 3 males after Goliath, at least 1 is approx same size as Damien, I thought. Turn out that new guy has a "weak heart",  sad.gif  Faced any male or female FS also run.... doh.gif

This spider i only saw it a few times in my life time, and this is the first time i see such a large and fine specimen. I caught one small one this year but let it go already. I would love to see how this Goliath would match up against a similar specimen or with another male Bavia.
You have some superbly clear macros there. Damn those fangs are awesome.
Goliath seems to be the same species as the spider once posted up by someone called Leremy

This is a male Hyllus diardi, as I have found out last week, and I was also quite interested to see how he will display against another male of the same species. I placed him infront of a mirror, and he must have noted his own refelection, ...... he started walking backward.... blink.gif

Yup its the same species Leremy has posted.

Too bad Goliath died during the transfer I intended to a new found friend for a breeding project. doh.gif

After I found him lifeless in the container, I went out in search for another Hyllus diardi.....did not find any, but caught this lovely girl, Tangy instead....dun know what species is Tangy though...she has no "horns" like Mina

user posted image user posted image user posted image user posted image

Compared to Mina (Hyllus semicupreus), which I previously erroneously posted as a Hyllus diardi.

There are definately still places u can find them but hard to find them in PJ area unless u go to those unkept areas near old housing estates.

It's amazing how many people played with FS in the past and remember them as happy events that they never forget. Here's a couple of personal emails I got recently which I hope the authors don't mind me sharing as it really illustrate the impact FS has on our childhood memories. Thanks, simon and walter. Simon is my long time fren since form 6. We never played FS together before cuz i only knew him after he had long time stopped playing FS but nice to know that you did, simon!

I am pleasantly surprised and happy to have visited your web site and to see some of your combatant jumping spiders slug it out especailly

Big Head and Archilles, both of which are beautiful specimens. Its awsome ! All these remind of my childhood days when I use to comb the

garden and neighbourhood hedges for spiders. The was 50 years ago and I'm happy to know that this hobby is very much alive and well

today thanks to people like you. I'm based in Singapore and if you are not too far north in Malaysia I would like to drive up to where you

are and with your permission watch some of you spider fights and perhaps participate in a spider hunt or two.

I look forward to hearing from you or you can text me at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely,

Walter Tan

50 years ago? Walau. I wonder spiders at that time were bigger than the ones now. I'm sure he has a few good stories to tell, hey?

Centaur:
Thanks for the pics. They are very nice macros. The Hyllus pictures look very much like the "Hantu Kuning" (Evarcha flavocincta) I used to play with, which were very good fighters. Probably a close relative.

I have got a female Evarcha flavocincta sometime back too...pretty big for a jumping spider. Those "horns" are similar to the Hyllus.

I remember trying to fight a much smaller male Hyllus diardi (but still a tad bigger than FS) against the FS when I was serving the army (around 10 years ago). FS male...in cowering mode.....the Hyllus got ready and just pounce....no chance for a fight at all.... The strange thing is the Hyllus doesn't treat them as food...just threat..as he ditch the carcass of the FS after the kill....no sucking

I plan to breed this Hyllus if possible...

Phew, 37 page of browsing and clip watching tongue.gif

Being a spider fighter during my primary school days in melaka which is around 10 years ago or more laugh.gif
My school just beside a jungle foliage rich area and they planted some shrubs beside the fence against the jungle, it was roam free with a variety of jumping spiders those days. Most common was the fighter this thread talking about (nick named King Kong among the kids) , and another type that kinda looks like the mangrove jumper but somehow a lil similar with your female bavia in shape also, but size wise very small and brown in color. Used to be mistaken as female for the King those days laugh.gif

Currently studying in Sunway college, will search around green areas in this part of town to see whether got or not and maybe someday can train up my own regiment like viper and fight with u guys icon_idea.gif

When simon emailed me about pao fu, he didn't know about this tread and the fs videos we posted. Anyway simon then recalled some pretty funny story about his spider experience with another fren called KC so here's the follow up emails i feel must be shared...hehehe

Yes...it was KC. I witnessed that incident with another boy (Dai Tau). ***ing funny. I still remember...KC that time caught a spider...was no.1 for a few days till he lose to Dai Tau's spider. He then wanna rematch on the spot and at that time...one of the way is to refresh the spider by giving it a breath fresh air. So he put the spider at the finger tip like most of us did and usually no problem. But this time...what we saw...was the funniest chapter in my life. I didnt see the spider jumped into his mouth...but what I saw was KC was spitting out. We werent looking at him actually cos was bizi trying to walk our spiders in our hands...but when he was spitting out...we looked at him. We saw KC...spitting out the legs, body parts, the "kim", all came out separately. I was stunned....but Dai Tau...when saw that...he laughed it out...and I also laughed. That was KC's most embarassing moment. From then onwards, we dont blow air to fresh up the spider. When no female spider to excite...we may resort to this idea. Hahahaha...when I told this to MC...MC laughed non stop and he alw refer to KC's "Har Har" (gesture of blowing air (..with mouth wide open)).

The Hyllus semicupreus(Mina) looks like Big spider star man.

Centaur, these spiders are fearless attackers as evident by this clip that mangrovejumper put up.

We even tested it against a bigger spider Bandar(named by viper) female. The spider Bandar female just backed away. Big spider star has guts of steel man.

Hi Mindstorm,

The Big spider Star belongs to the species Plexippus paykulli, which I have kept before. The female of these species are ruthless killers, put two in a container, and only one will emerge alive... The males fight, but are usually just show and no action....

I am intending to breed the Hyllus diardi, with the aid of my new friend. She (yeah,a girl) has succesfully raised from eggs two broods of the diardi, 3 broods of Hasarius adansoni, and I intend to let her try out Thania later....

Are you sure? I think Plexippus paykulli is a type of house spider. "Big Spider Star" is never found inside the house. They make large nests on the underside of the leaves...usually thickly webbed to the point that you can't even see the spider inside until you tear open the nest. They are also quite hand friendly, not like the house spiders that never stop jumping.

If you can take a close up photo of the Big spider star, then I may be able to confirm the exact species. I have kept Paykulli before, they do make nest on the underside, and in between leaves. After letting 6 of them go, I can still see at least 4 of their nest in the shrubs.

Initially, they jump non stop when I try to handle them, but after some time, they can be as docile as FS when they are used to me.

She is a keen enthusiast who got introduced to the spiders, when one web weaving critters spinned a web across her bed. Her parents actually prefer her current pets as opposed to dogs or cats, as they are allergic to to furry pets.

She is in contacts with some lab guys who may come up with some research paper once in a while. She was given a female Hyllus diardi by them, and it laid a clutch of eggs.....now she is very experience in raising spiderlings.

Its not a top secret project, breeding them is to eliminate the need to go hunt for one, when the current one leave you....

This the longest fighting spider fight. Break Mindstorm record ady.
FS kakis must see this fight.

Blackie vs Razer. Fierce fight where both FS chop, arm push and grab each other till exhausted, rest awhile and continued to fight back. Razer is much more stronger and in control of the fight at the middle of fight. Blackie fought hard but in the end too exhausted and have to retreat. (Blackie fought and defeated GP earlier).

OMG. If i didn't see it with my own eyes, i wouldn't have believed such a fight was possible! You didn't say it wrong when you sms me to say that ur fs fought olympic style! On this 6th day of the olympics and ur fs are in it! Even boxers or ufc has 3-5 minutes bouts. This fight beat the previous record by a mile man. Razer and Blackie is so evenly matched and so UNBELIEVABLE resilient, they simply refuse to stop. When they got tired they just took a rest, almost oblivious to the opponent beside them and then resume when they rested enough and meet eye to eye. Incredible. They did take a couple of long rests...
2.38-3.17 - 39s
3.52-5.02 - 70s
5.36-6.00 - 24s
Adds up to about 2 minutes 13s. The fight ended at 6.11s. Although there are minor breaks besides the 3 long rest... i would say it's pretty active resulting in active fighting for about 4 minutes! Insane. If all fs fights are like this, i bet fs fighting would long have been a national past time!

Which was right and which was left at the beginning of the fight? Was the blur one on the left Blackie?

0.19-0.22 - which was the spider that did the leg grabbing and which was the one that broke away first? Was it blackie the broke away? Amazing, that it turn back to fight again.
0.49-0.54 - i thought that wld be the end for the fs that kena chop... it looks beaten up...but oh no, that was just the beginning...

This fight has so many holding bites, there must be lots of venom being exchanged
0.20 -teeth biting
0.29-3.36 - teeth biting
1.13 - teeth biting
1.21-1.42 - leg biting

I also noticed...
2.55- blood spitting
by the top fs

Can see in the middle of the fight, these 2 fs are so exhausted, arms shaking and teeth wide apart as if gasping yet continue to try to tear each other apart......this fs fight is truly out of the world. I foresee this record will remain unbroken for a long long LONG time. Thanks a million, Viper for sharing this remarkable clip.
