cool video. the male kena chop by the female.

I have since let go Berserk and Nightmare back to their original place after keeping them for 2 weeks. They leapt happily away. They are not fierce fighters, prefering to avoid each other.

Now I'm still keeping the Bavia trio, a couple of female fs and a Hyllus semicurpeous.

Big male?

Here's my DIY jumper sactuary. Took me several weeks of ad hoc planning and thinking to make in my spare time. It's a combination of many materials and widgets. The whole back of this cage is fine netting(also 3/4 of the top), so the inside is well-ventilated.
Attached Image Attached Image
Attached Image
With several openings so I can put live feed in without having to open the main door lest insects inside fly out when they are plentiful.
Attached Image Attached Image
There is a small blank ant colony inside, and also breeding fruit flies. So I don't bother feeding the spideys inside.
I am still waiting for it to mature so that the money plant which i planted at the back can grow up onto the bamboo support i placed and fill up the top part of the cage. The base is a strong plastic tub filled with black soil for a sturdy base. Hence i don't move it around, although it is light enough(but still pretty heavy) to be carried alone should i wish to.

Here is one of the female staying in a rather peculiar nest. Between the flower of the fern and one of the fern's leaf.
Attached Image Attached Image
Attached Image
Because the jagged flower cone is sandwiched in between the white single petal and the leaf, the female used it as one of her walls.

Some pics of my hyllus, i caught it in a park near where i stay.

It was cute. I realized hyllus make good pets for several reasons.
1. It is not fussy about its environment and would easily make nest between a couple of small leafs. My hyllus looks very comfortable in its environment and doesn't seem to want to try and "escape". It would just stay still for long periods of time on the wall of a container and look around slowly waiting for prey. When it is full it hides in its very private nest. When it is hungry it slowly scout around.
2. It is great fun to watch it hunt. Slow and steady.
3. Hyllus can be real gluttons. Before it moulted, it took up to 7 small crickets continuously. I didnt expect it to finish off every cricket one after another. I placed them there for reserves so that it could eat them over a couple of days but it ate every single one of them until it was fat.
Here she is eating one...

Moulted on the 20/10/08... she looks more serious now

Wah, Hyllus moulted again! After the last moult at 20/10/08, it ate a whole bunch of crickets, got fat and then went into building a tight nest. She then started to stay inside the nest for great length of time.. i thot she was laying unfertilized eggs. Today, i saw her came out, and much bigger! That's a short span of 13 days in between 2 moults. Below u can see 2 of her "tengkorak"(skull)...
She measures slightly less than 12mm, she's longer than the male spider bandar!
Attached Image Attached Image
Attached Image Attached Image
I'm having loads of self-bred crickets, this is only a small number of the total population...
Attached Image
Hyllus seems to do very well on crickets alone. She ate another sizable one today. But those Bavias don't seem to want to eat the same food day in day out. If i just keep feeding them one type of feed(crickets, roaches or fruit flies) eventually they just stop eating until i change their diet.
I think i'll have to find some time to look for a boyfriend for Hyllus.

Couldn't resist taking some pics of my Hyllus. Her eyes has a green tinge to them when light is reflected.
Attached Image Attached Image
Attached Image Attached Image
She has these couple of long thingy at the tip of her abdomen which she wriggles whenever she secure some web to the surface she is on.
Attached Image
She's a bit pinkish around the base of her legs area.
Attached Image
Guess what she's strecthing to peer at? My computer screen!
Attached Image

I'm naming her Glutty for she is a glutton. The reason i named her is because i found another one today by accident! I was just walking to my car after work and saw another female Hyllus on a lilly leave under a tree in the parking lot.
She got the slippery symptom where she cannot cling onto the plastic surface. So i put a cut root for her to cling to in her container. She hasn't eaten yet. She seems scared of the crickets i gave her. I name here Dazzy cuz she's rather dazed.
Attached Image Attached Image

Here she is compared to Glutty. Much smaller.

Woohoo, CNY 2009 is here. Happy Chinese New Year to everyone!

My friend, Dan came back from the states and of cuz by tradition, we will take at least one day to go spidey hunting!
Today, on the second day of CNY, that's what we did.

Before it becomes an anti-climax, I must say that this time round there aren't any superb clips to be shown. In total my friend got 12 males and I got 7 males for the day-end battle. Most of the fights were short push and at most single chops with several no-shows(kecut). By now, we know that generally this is can be expected of newly caught spideys. For fs to display the tenacious behaviour seen in many of Viper's clips, one will have to keep and train the fs for some time through repeated battles.

We went 3 destinations today in chronological order. LG(2 hours plus in the morning), AM(half hour, didn't plan to go there but was passing by after having lunch at SOGO and decided to drop by for a quick look) and LO(an hour plus).

Dan got 8 from LG, 4 from AM and 0 from LO.
I got 3 from LG, 1 from AM and 1 from LO. I also had 2 imports from Negeri Sembilan, Port Dickson.

In the end, one of Dan's AM male emerged as winner, being also the largest, against the single male I found from LO. It was the last fight of the day. The winner looked dazed and slow b4 the fight, and frequently missed seeing his opponent on stage. But when he finally did, he displayed an awesome stance and showed off his wide wing span which was no match for his opponent. With a short push, he emerged victorious over 19 males. I didn't managed to get any close-ups shots of this new first king because it was getting really dark by then. I'll meet up with Dan before he flys back to US and try to get some good shots.

All in all, Dan kept his king and another 2 because of their size. (He havent given them any meaningful names yet). While I also kept 3 of my best. The third one was kecut but it had size, and I reckon it is still immature. With several weeks of good feeding and sparring, he could become a fearsome contender.

The Stats:-
Total: 17 fights
9 short push(including the last fight-1st and 2nd king)
1 long push
4 no shows
3 single chops

Some photos
1)First Destination - LG

Oops, where did it go?

Me catching spiders without damaging the plants.
Orchids, suprisingly make a haven for fs.

Attached Image
Dan's a careful catcher, positioning himself at proper angles to assess the worthiness of his potential catch and its surrounding environment before deciding on a move or strategy.

Attached Image Attached Image
Dan, "Got one male"
Half minute later, "Another one"
2 minutes later, "Another one"
I was dumbfounded.
Dan was quickly maxed out on his containers. So he started culling his catch on the spot by putting caught ones in the nest of new ones to see which one wins and then he takes the winners. He only does this for small ones, big ones of cuz will be assessed back home.

Attached Image
A last minute encounter, with just a split second glance, Dan knows it is a "must" catch... a sizable one.
And he was right.

Attached Image
According to Dan, this was the type of leaf where Bighead was found.

Dan, "We have caught enough"
Me, "We have more than enough".

Attached Image Attached Image
Unloading at noon. "How many did you catch? 3?"
Attached Image Attached Image
"Nope, 12". Gasp. Spideys on my dashboard. A sizable one.

2)Second Unplanned Destination

Dan was surprised at the number of males and ease of catching for this small strip of land

3) Third Destination
Attached Image Attached Image
Only one male from here. Turned out to be my first king. But lost to Dan's first king.

Happy CNY.

Wow. 2nd day of CNY start go hunt and fight FS ady. too bad i'm at my hometown JB buzy pai nian and eat big meal.
You and Dan went few good places to catch fs and caugt quite alot too. The Menara Tinjau/Look out point area where i caught Giant Bu is from the small red bamboo plants beside the stairs on the way up to the view structure building. The place where u and Dan hunt for FS near the spider lily plants is the place i caught the green spiders last time and some small average size FS.

Wa.. you also went to the Embassy row place to catch FS.. tat place have alot female fs with eggs . There also have alot average size male FS.
Last time i caught Chaos from there, its a good FS habitat place. Hope the FS there will repopulate back. Nowdays very few place in town can find FS habitat. Even in Tasik Perdana Garden FS there is not many.

How big is the FS you and Dan caught? Is it as big as Chaos or Archilles?
*
I think so. I will try to get some close-up shots on it later.

Dan went back to the states yesterday. The day before he left, we went for a short spider hunt. He got 3 males but lost the biggest one because the net on the container was torn and the spider somehow escape from the pouch where he placed his container. I got none. Dan still proved he is better catcher than i am. The 2 new ones he caught was still no match for the his first king and my first king we caught earlier.

I thought your avatar looked familiar...

yes... i was playing with these long time since school days (form 2 & 3) in a sec school in SS3. Our hunting ground was near a water tank in SS3, behind some terrace houses. Normally the residents would setup some fences or plant plants near the water tank. We would all enjoy our ponteng sessions and catch them and store in matchboxes, and bring them to school to fight.

I had rared many of them in matchboxes, and put a soaked cotton ball for it to drink. And catch some females for the males to have "fun", or to gain confidence after losing a battle, and by gently pressing on its legs so she can't run. Yea...that was rape...and it was the first time seeing how spiders mate... with all the wriggling and stuffs tongue.gif

Thanks for the posts.  It was an enjoyable trip and not as hot as the last time.
The failure to catch any chop this time around is a good indication of how hard it is to find a chop.  It's so much easier to convert them than to find them in the wild.

The first king was initially named Ampang4.  I'm not very creative with names.  I'm having a hard time coming up with the two I have right now, including Baby (house spider I've kept for 8 months now, still a baby) and the one the Hyllus I brought back on this trip.  Hopefully I can get the Hyllus to adulthood, although I think it's a different species (not H. diardi) than Drag0nette's so it will be smaller.

Here are some of my pics to contribute to the thread.
1.  Hantu Kuning (Evarcha flavocincta) female.
2.  Hantu Kuning male eating small fighting spider male.
3.  Unidentified jumper eating a big bluebottle fly.
*
Wah... that last pic is astonishing man...the size difference btw the predator and the prey.

Ur Hyllus is a semicupreus, same like the one centaurfly showed us last time
http://centaurfly.blogspot.com/2008/08/min...emicupreus.html
and same like mine too. I see Drag0nette updated her blog with a new Diardi now which name sounds like her favourite one that passed on.

Nolar, its average size only, not big size. The FS is about Hope size. Its abit old ady coz its arms bend in most of the time while walking but still show angry face when face it opponent.  Check out the videos i've uploaded today.

I've released the FS near my house with a female FS 2gether yesterday. This morning when i go jogging, the male FS is still there in between the big leaves.
I also found some male FS with female FS in nest nearby my housing area .. all mostly average size only.
I hope the FS at my housing area will breed and multiply more.

How many FS you have currently?
Have new FS videos?

yeah...maybe u can go back to Archilles place!

3 only. The first king given by Dan is quite old already.

Got a few...but nothing compared to ur videos u made last time.
I got time i will load some of the more interesting ones bit by bit.

i no longer trying to breed FS cuz lack of suitable garden. They are almost impossible to breed in captive as i have written many of the problems.

Yes, we (Mindstorm & I) got one last year (Cam, the Cameron Highland male) and another a few weeks ago at Lookout point, a female.  I don't have any pictures though.  Here's the youtube link for Cam.
Cam

It's a different species of Thiania.  Wikipedia says there are 17 species of Thiania.  It's sufficiently different from T. bhamoensis that they may not even recognize each other.  The female was chased away by a male that I had without a mating dance.  Viper's giant Bu was yet another species but we couldn't find any of those.  I doubt they are better fighters though.

Some pics of my new setup for the sub-adult Hyllus (moulted yesterday).

Nice setup man! Wah...ur hyllus moult so fast! Hyllus seems to have no problems adapting to captivity and seems to grow quite fast if u feed it well.

Well, no one has yet explore fully the other species of Thiania... but by logic, since Bhamoensis is the most wide spread one, I guess Bhamoensis must be the most adaptable one and maybe the better fighter among the all others species, hence securing more nest to live in and propagate.

So which is bigger?

Here is where i was keeping Bighead all along, in a small pill container. Dan was one surprised dude when i showed it to him, hehe.
Attached Image

Still keeping my first king, the one caught from lookout point. Maturing nicely. Eating mostly ants.

Welcome back and congratulation on ur new born baby.  rclxms.gif

1st King died coz old ady? Man.. i thought wanna look at ur 1st king with my own eyes to see its actual size... now he's gone.  sad.gif

From the pic u show its head is almost as big as BigHead.  shakehead.gif
Its arms and legs all bend in position.. ur BigHead arm and legs position different...  hmm.gif
All the FS i played bfr during skool days, when they died, their legs and arms will bend in just like ur 1st King.
Some after lost in fights and injured badly.. the FS will walk limping and after awhile bend their arms and legs in...dead. I feel the FS suicide coz both their arms bend deep inside their mouth.. shocking.gif .

Now ur current FS fight normal or chops alot? Any new good fight videos?

My FS all quite weak .. just do some arm pushing or 1 chops except Repco abit fierce type.
Yesterday when i let my FS spa under a torch light, Repco saw its own shadow and wanted to fight wit it also.tongue.gif

Added on February 21, 2009, 1:02 pmYa Mindstorm..
Yesterday i chk my FS videos, some of the fight videos i didn't upload yet in youtube..

Xonan vs Hades 9Apr2008
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ny4r82h1qOc...re=channel_page

You can upload in 1st page under Small win Big videos.
=========================
These videos you can also add to ur 1st page FS fights videos.

Big vs Big FS
Celltel VS Riper
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nz0AxjR2xM...re=channel_page
1 arm lock, 1 arm pushing
Riper vs Unknown..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uC0XePQ6OQ...re=channel_page

10-15 secs fight
OneTeeth vs Hope
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y05u-6BHbjk...re=channel_page
*
i dont think it is suicide la...just that when fs dies, it will dry up which causes its forelegs to bend inwards pointing towards its mid torax or mouth.

Uploaded Xonan vs Hades but actually the other 3 clips i already uploaded as

14seconds
Celltel vs Riper (30July2008)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nz0AxjR2xM

Other good fights(less than 10 seconds)
Riper vs Unknown Rd2 (15July2008)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uC0XePQ6OQ

12seconds
Oneteeth vs Hope (17May2008)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y05u-6BHbjk

I uploaded again under the heading which u said for the first and second ones but the last one(Oneteeth vs Hope) is already there.

caught one new male that had just chng skin, still thinking of a name that suits him.. Outlaw's size is between the small male viper just caught and the bigger one he showed... He is more fierce with a female inside the nest... he used multiple chops against the new Male i just caught... but in the end still lose.. i think he was out of bullets  whistling.gif

i think i'll name him Reddie at the meantime cuz his legs are still abit red. He's stronger than outlaw but he lose to outlaw when it comes to females, outlaw only fights right when it comes to mates.  tongue.gif

After i fed him a juicy flies... the diffrence in size between my 2 FS is now observable.. Reddie's arms are longer.
Don't have a camera yet , cant show u guys the pix  cry.gif  i want a camera~~ cry.gif  cry.gif

Viper : I saw viper's former kings... Bighead Bigguns, and some other strong ones like archilles , Jack etcs. they are all heavyweights... i think i nid to spend some time b4 i can compare with those heavyweights...  hmm.gif

I noe where are the big ones located in my area.. but there got too many leeches... nearly got sucked by one.. one of the FS kaki got sick being sucked by one.. now scared xD
*
Wah, which part of malaysia are u from? If u got big ones, u're lucky man. Not easy to find.

Wear rubber boots and spray with Baigon la... leech won't dare to climb up. One experienced fishing kaki told me.
Or like me, i use a mosquito repellent called Off... i smear on my shoes... leech won't climb. Or if manage to climb, i jst smear some on it, sure drop.

Last time i also find it hard to catch those big flies to feed my big King FS. I use rubber band to lastik the flies when hingap at table..  the injured flies i just take and drop it infront of my FS. My FS saw and jump chop eat the flies. laugh.gif  Sometimes if  i'm lucky to scope flies into a transparent plastic case den i put my FS inside.. more fun coz can see my FS wrestling with the big flies.

*
Lastik also can ah? For me, easiest way to catch flies is use a transparent plastic bag.. slowly, very slowly put over a standing fly. 99% sure catch. Then after that just take off one wing and throw to spider.

Great to have you here man. Now Viper and me have another kaki near us where we can set up fights.

Nice story u have there. Looks like chop is quite ubiquitous. I didn't know can let spider fight with mirror. I know they will react but i don't remember letting a fs engage with a mirror. ur fs must be damn fierce like fighting fish if can attack mirror too.

I'm sure cheras which is quite an old place have lots of area to catch. If u daring like viper, can go people's backyard to find also, haha! I not so daring, but daring enuf to go dangerous places.

Remember, if can, show us ur fs fights with clips or photo also la. If no record, once a great fight is fought, it can only be enjoyed by whoever is there at that time and will be gone forever.

haha!! i found ur recent hideout...

Great revival of ur tread, man! Been busy with many other stuff in my life recently(baby, work, projects etc). Decided to google a bit on spiders just now and found ur tread. I loved the stories told by ur fishing kakis. Imagine what an impact fighting spiders had on kids(or even teenages or adults) during the past before computer were invented. I especially liked the one from BigTom and his 3 ferocious battles with his brother! Wonderful of u to started that tread. Also shows how fs was such a craze in Singapore once upon a time.

i tried logging into the forum with a pass ID but somehow cannot go in. Same thing as last time, tried to go in to contact u but also cannot, dunno why. That's why viper eventually pm u.

Anyway, i just wanted to say hi and also thank u for ur referral here.
Also, on fs, i don't think "females" change to males. Those that do are actually males to start with. Just before the last moult, their pedipalps(where they store sperm) are actually much bigger than that of females. Just that before the last moult, their face is not white, hence morphologically looking like a female.... but in strict biological sense, they are actually males.

Ur one arm blue is definately the most awesome one arm bandit ever seen!

Wah u are really coming out with very good fight clips! One of these days when i free, i will link up the good ones in the hall of fame too. Many of them definately deserves to be there.

I also plan to group together all the links about fs(stories, other forums, photos) that are scattered all over this tread and put it in front page for easy reference.

My Hyllus is doing really well.  The weather has warmed up and it's now easier to find food for her.  I no longer put her nest in the bottle because she won't wander far from the nest.  So the fake plant just sits on the counter in the spider room.  She'll only come out if the sun is shining on the leaf, and then go back in when it's shaded.

I liked the clips u took of hyllus. Is she bigger now?

Guess wat, i am still keeping one of the male fs we caught in Jan(the kecut big one, but eventually won ur first king)! I released him onto my plant in my porch i think for 2 weeks already, and he is still staying in the same mansion nest, eating ants as they passed along. I will get a snapshot of it tomorrow. he is 3 months old now.

Maybe we not yet able to find good FS habitat or leaves which have big/large chop FS.

Some of the FS i caught that shows some partial chop are from rough leaves surface. The FS size about average size.. not too small.. bigger than ur smallchop of coz.. eg. like Kaizer, DarkStar

Like Kelapa sawit, daun nipah, sugar cane leavesm..

Discovered this thread while google for fighting spiders. Took quite sometimes to read through the threads. Very interesting. It reminds me of my childhood days of catching FS. It's an interesting sports though u got to bear through the hot sun and mosquitoe bites.

Last but not least, kudos to mindstorm and viper88, u two guys provide a very detailed adventures on hunting and fighting FS.

Added on April 22, 2009, 11:17 amCaught afew FS last two weeks. All looks like avg size or smaller. Fight wasn't that good. Hopefully after keeping them for sometimes, their fights will improve.

KopPao, you are in SG ? Hope one day can meet up with you guys to hunt for spiders in sg.
*
Wah, if u read through this tread, then confirm u are also another hardcore fs kaki like us. How come u suddenly decided to google fighting spiders leh??

thanks for the praise. Anyway, i went to ur tread to which u started in arofanatics and left a comment there. Great man, u are again making the interest come back again in Singapore. don't forget video clip if fight, once good fight fought, will be gone forever if no clip.
For the benefit of other readers here.
http://www.arofanatics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=368934

Anyway, interesting to know now got a TV series in Singapore called "Fighting Spiders"!
http://fightingspiders.mediacorptv.sg/about.htm
But of course it is more on people la...but i think sure got some parts depicting school boys playing with fighting spiders. I saw some parts in youtube but didn't really see any parts showing any REAL fighting spiders. Did u follow the series, got any part showing REAL fs fighting ah?? I also wonder who is the director, script writer and how their inspiration for such a drama come about. I think it is from a book...cuz i know of a book that is written by Singorean also got mention about fighting spiders being an influence to boys in olden times. Do you know?
