Nice pics you have there centaurfly. What do you feed your many FS? Ain't easy to be keeping so many...

Wah, viper, that is a very big female you have there? Is it bigger than the one you gave me last time? Bigger than choas? It looks like a female to me and not a male which haven't change skin. If you don't want, don't let it go leh... give or sell me.

Damn.during form1 i was catching so many of these spiders to fight them!
Just WOW!Thanks to ts for this topic.I just saw it.I still cant forget how my friends and i walked deep into the jungle just to find these spiders during fridays coz school starts late.
Anyone still go and hunt them?I wanna join!
*
You're welcome. I remember during form 2(1987) I tried to take a couple of photos of my first king then...I couldn't wait for the photos to developed...when they finally came out, all I got was pictures of blurry leaves! I was naive then and didn't understand the concept of macro focus. I tried taking those pictures too close up.
I also distinctly remember during form 6, how I wished I can capture the fighting of fs on video like those insect shows on national geography, but affordable camcorders with macro functions didn't exist back then so it just remained a wish. So when I laid hands on my first digi camera and camcorder(bought them both together for my wedding last year), I didn't wait long to capture these amazing creatures on video to share with others. Thanks to Mangrovejumper, we made our first awesome clips.

Thanks to Viper too for bringing this hobby to the next level by catching some of the fiercest fs and capturing tons of fantastic fighting clips. Viper has added more fighting clips than me and you can view his youtube channel here.

He has lots of amazing clips but my favourite would be this

Of cuz we still hunt them. Where do you stay? Good to see another local here where we could meet up for fs fight!

adrian help !! my egg batch just gave birth ! any idea where to get food for them ? =p

guess tmr i will release it out.. tongue.gif
*
woh, when did you had an egg batch? as far as i remember, ass mentioned he had an egg batch... dunno wat happened to it.

I only know of 2 types of feed u can give them, very small ants or springtails. But it is very difficult to be feeding them if you do not have a ready culture of these live feed. And even so, so far, I still have not succeeded in rearing them. So unless you see it as a challenge and take it up, i guess best you let them go. Or maybe keep just one and try to rear it up by finding at least one tiny insect of it a day and watering it daily.

If you don't mind can you let me know..

Do you know when was it laid? or did you get it from the wild, when was that?
On wat leaf was the egg batch on? Is the leaf already dried?
What container did you kept it in? Was it kept in a dark area or bright?
Did you keep the female together with the eggs until it hatch?
How many babies were there?

Hopefully you can answer these questions so that we can gather information on how to improve hatching rate.
Even for hatching in captivity i didn't have good success, hence I'm trying to find clues on what i did wrong.

I can see from you past post that also have an interest in trying to breed fs. It is certainly a worthy cause. There are many people who find fs interesting but because of difficultly in getting them, they just drop their interest. Male FS also don't live very long..to date longest is 3 and a half months from moulting...so even for hardcore enthusiast, keeping the interest is also difficult because after ur first king gets old and dies... you have to catch again and usually places you caught before won't regenerate that quickly again for you to be able to find big males again....if ever. As such, interest also vanes.
I remember at one time i was following the attempt at breeding arowanas way back in the 80-90s. Many people tried with all sorts of tanks setup but did not succeed. A japanese even documented the first(i think) breeding and posted it up on the net with pics. I followed out of interest, not that i want to breed them. Of cuz, now aros are successfully bred and sold round the world. Due to its high price, I guess it is a matter of time this will happen. However from it we learn that success comes through trial and error, learning and improvising.

So who will be the first guy to be able to successfully breed and raise fs in a controlled manner??

I got the egg batch from wild.. 3 weeks ago. its a dried leaf.
A round transparent container.. it was place on a table.. and i dont frequently on the lights cause its near window.
female was place together with egg till it hatch... around 12 babies was found.

i decided to let go all of them.. cause i got no time to take care of them.. biggrin.gif

Thanks for the info. Looks like live leave is not necessary but female is important. Lucky the female didn't decide to eat the eggs.

Today I just came back from seremban. My grandma passed away on sunday and I went back to attend the funeral. Grandma's 92 and it's considered a "hei si"(happy event) to chinese because she had lived a long life.
Of cuz, going back, with so much spare time, surely I'll scout around for fs in my grandma's garden.
In this isolated pot of neighbour's plant beside a "christmas tree"...
Attached Image
..I found a nice male which is not big, just medium size but I liked it becuz it was very healthy and active, so i took sum pics of it. Looks like it has just eaten a nice big meal. Notice how the pattern on the head of the spider differs when viewed from different angles. The first pic viewed from side, the pattern looks like longgish pattern while when viewed from the back in the last pic, it looks like a heart shape!

I also revisited the nest i saw 2 weeks ago and yeah, they hatched, looks like all hatched and counting the egg shells, more than 10
Attached Image Attached Image
Attached Image
One sling was left there... it had a red abdomen

Another bigger sling on the same plant

I also checked out the fs population at the back of the garden. Found many of young and juveniles among the creepers growing beside the banana tree...looks like a healthy young population. Unfortunately no males.

..a juvenile eating what looks like some kinda small fly

There was female with eggs. The egg nest was also on the underside of the top leaf.

Another female which attempts to build its egg nest underneath the top leave too.

Yesterday I went to Viper's house to see his giant bu. When I reached there, Viper just came home from work and was feeding his giant bu fruit flies.
Walao...really huge. To me, I think it is ANOTHER species of Thiania. It was very healthy and its jump is really heavy when it lands on your hand.
Viper gave me his giant bu. Thanks man. Below I post some close up pics of the giant bu.

Besides its obvious size unseen in normal fs, there are some other morphological differences compared to normal fs female...
1. Notice the 2 blue lines that run towards the tip(end) of the abdomen, sort of merges at the tip. In the normal fs, these 2 lines disappear under the abdomen and do not meet at the tip.
2. Also there is a clear light coloured turf of hairs clearly visible below the eyes, similar to the one shown here from India. http://salticidae.org/salticid/diagnost/th...m-kerala-ph.htm
3. Notice also the light blue color markings at the joints of its forearms and the second pair of legs which is very much more prominent compared to a normal fs female.

Attached Image Attached Image
Attached Image Attached Image
Attached Image Attached Image

Compare its size to a normal sized female
Attached Image Attached Image
Attached Image Attached Image
Attached Image Attached Image

Compared to bighead...the giant bu's head is bigger!
Attached Image

Here a clip of the giant bu. Despite its huge size, giant bu is not ferocious. It tends to avoid the much smaller female and never once did it try to bite it even at close proximity. Once a while it may just show angry face. Giant bu is a gentle giant!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfxOmHq6LH0

I was once told by a seremban guy, after I showed him Bighead, that the fs he caught were much bigger..about the half size of his thumb. He also said its abdomen is more brownish in color. I found it hard to believe him then...but after seeing this female...what he said is probably true! Man, I wonder what a large male of this species looks like!

----------------------------------

Viper also gave me a male fs which he wants to let go. It was the fiercest one he had but he thinks it pales it comparison to the legends he had in the past. It wasn't named so I named it Riper. It end up beating the 2 fs I had, Nicey from seremban and Whiteleg. Whiteleg is now black and old. It was no fight against Riper. Bronze died of old age a few days back.
Here's the fighting clip, viper.

Incredible macro photos you have there, centaurfly. Very sharp.

Wah, your Canon PowerShot S3 IS can capture vids so close up and sharp also??

Your clip [Goblin won Harry, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5b4Ic_K4wEc] was beautifully taken.
I especially like the angle and closeup. You got a really good close up clip of fs chopping... not easy to take because for me, many times those fs would easily disappear out of screen when I tried to shoot too near. I have always imagine taking this kinda shots but with even higher fps... imagine being able to view such action slo-mo with perfect clarity! But those require really high end cameras. Anyway, great work man.

Jabber really got balled up in that fight. Superb chop.

Viper, nice 10 second fight there. Unknown is chop? Looks like infinity is too big for him.

Have to resize the video coz youtube reject the full video coz too long 25mins.
The later part of the video i edited /cut off showing Riper eating Unknown back abdomen.

Holy crap.. Riper is damn fierce killer. Good thing you didn't let him go. U could have save Unknown from death if you blew on them the moment he got grab from the back.. or maybe also will die. But unknown would have been worth saving considering it is a chop.

Another death match to list.

Thanks for the pics, Centaurfly.  I could tell Goblin is a chop (sup pow) just by looking at it.  Nice dirty face characteristic of chops.

If you go back to earlier posts by Mindstorm, there are descriptions and pics of food breeding.  I agree it can be time consuming if you have to feed a lot of them as well as clean their containers individually.

Your plan of propagating the gene line is the easiest way to approach breeding, I think.  Better if you're able to find some bushes that are FS-free, or clear an area of previous residents (so you can pre-select your gene line by putting only your males and females there)...and let nature take its course.  Check in regularly to remove predators.  Mindstorm's idea of breeding in captivity is a much tougher task.
*
When I looked closely, I realized the reason behind the dirty face....missing white hairs!! How they get missing, that I have no theory...

To keep a lot of fs(or any animal), one must move away from needing to clean and feed each animal individually. The topic of husbandary design for fs is another great topic to get into, i can probably fill many pages if i were to write the advantages and disadvantages the various possible designs. Until i test the some prototypes, I think i better not get into it.

"Everything is built twice. Once in the mind, then in reality"

Added on July 18, 2008, 12:42 amToday is a sad day for me. Big bu died! Sorry viper..

Actually today i set up the big container for Big bu and put in a lot of plants. Big bu was healthy and move around a lot in the container. I also place a lot of fruit flies in the container for her. But i made a mistake is that i put too much water in the glass container for the plants and some spill out. The water that spill out was very shallow and only covered parts of the container floor(maybe 15%). I didn't expect to come back and find Big bu drown upside down in it! My guess is that Big bu slip and fell backwards into the puddle and was unable to turn right side up to crawl away. Damn. (I noticed that while Big bu was very healthy, walk with jerkiness, it had difficultly clinging onto plastic even in the small container. My guess is because of her heavy weight!)

This is my second mess-up with fs since i started this tread. First one being blurman ran away.

Well, just to let others know so they don't make the same mistake like i did. Fs clearly need to drink daily, but fs actually can easily drown if container has too much water. I remember once one male died after i caught it and place it inside a plastic bag because the plastic bag was wet.

Sigh...

The earlier FS i caught look very weak, i've already release it back to the place i caught it last time. Its size quite average size, maybe not chaos.
How is Zenith doin?

When u free? I want to pass back Riper 2u.

Zeith is doing fine. Ate a mosquito today. It beat Nicey but lost to Whiteleg.

The hatch date was unknown.. a span of 10 days from first saw as egg till when caught it. If taken arbitarily as 5 days, then the first moult would be around 3 weeks after hatching. As of today, i have kept a sling the longest, for 20 days. Hopefully to adult.

I was trying to look for a FS that can match Damien's size, when I found this goliath jumping spider instead.  drool.gif  Its really huge and I think it maybe the biggest species found in Singapore.

I can't find any detail of Goliath in the net. The nearest match is the Biting Jumping Spider from Australia, but the body length from that site stated 10mm.  http://www.geocities.com/brisbane_spiders/...mpingSpider.htm

I measured just the bodylength of Goliath (minus the legs), its 13mm.

Its quite docile, and willing to explore my hands without any coaxing needed..

Last pic is the size comparision of Goliath vs Damien..... hmm.gif

Caught 3 males after Goliath, at least 1 is approx same size as Damien, I thought. Turn out that new guy has a "weak heart",  sad.gif  Faced any male or female FS also run.... doh.gif

This spider i only saw it a few times in my life time, and this is the first time i see such a large and fine specimen. I caught one small one this year but let it go already. I would love to see how this Goliath would match up against a similar specimen or with another male Bavia.
You have some superbly clear macros there. Damn those fangs are awesome.

There are definately still places u can find them but hard to find them in PJ area unless u go to those unkept areas near old housing estates.

It's amazing how many people played with FS in the past and remember them as happy events that they never forget. Here's a couple of personal emails I got recently which I hope the authors don't mind me sharing as it really illustrate the impact FS has on our childhood memories. Thanks, simon and walter. Simon is my long time fren since form 6. We never played FS together before cuz i only knew him after he had long time stopped playing FS but nice to know that you did, simon!

Big Head and Archilles, both of which are beautiful specimens. Its awsome ! All these remind of my childhood days when I use to comb the

garden and neighbourhood hedges for spiders. The was 50 years ago and I'm happy to know that this hobby is very much alive and well

today thanks to people like you. I'm based in Singapore and if you are not too far north in Malaysia I would like to drive up to where you

are and with your permission watch some of you spider fights and perhaps participate in a spider hunt or two.

I look forward to hearing from you or you can text me at your earliest convenience.

Yes...it was KC. I witnessed that incident with another boy (Dai Tau). ***ing funny. I still remember...KC that time caught a spider...was no.1 for a few days till he lose to Dai Tau's spider. He then wanna rematch on the spot and at that time...one of the way is to refresh the spider by giving it a breath fresh air. So he put the spider at the finger tip like most of us did and usually no problem. But this time...what we saw...was the funniest chapter in my life. I didnt see the spider jumped into his mouth...but what I saw was KC was spitting out. We werent looking at him actually cos was bizi trying to walk our spiders in our hands...but when he was spitting out...we looked at him. We saw KC...spitting out the legs, body parts, the "kim", all came out separately. I was stunned....but Dai Tau...when saw that...he laughed it out...and I also laughed. That was KC's most embarassing moment. From then onwards, we dont blow air to fresh up the spider. When no female spider to excite...we may resort to this idea. Hahahaha...when I told this to MC...MC laughed non stop and he alw refer to KC's "Har Har" (gesture of blowing air (..with mouth wide open)).

Centaur:
Thanks for the pics.  They are very nice macros.  The Hyllus pictures look very much like the "Hantu Kuning" (Evarcha flavocincta) I used to play with, which were very good fighters.  Probably a close relative.

The Hyllus semicupreus(Mina) looks like Big spider star man.

Centaur, these spiders are fearless attackers as evident by this clip that mangrovejumper put up.

We even tested it against a bigger spider Bandar(named by viper) female. The spider Bandar female just backed away. Big spider star has guts of steel man.

Phew, 37 page of browsing and clip watching tongue.gif

Being a spider fighter during my primary school days in melaka which is around 10 years ago or more laugh.gif
My school just beside a jungle foliage rich area and they planted some shrubs beside the fence against the jungle, it was roam free with a variety of jumping spiders those days. Most common was the fighter this thread talking about (nick named King Kong among the kids) , and another type that kinda looks like the mangrove jumper but somehow a lil similar with your female bavia in shape also, but size wise very small and brown in color. Used to be mistaken as female for the King those days laugh.gif

Currently studying in Sunway college, will search around green areas in this part of town to see whether got or not and maybe someday can train up my own regiment like viper and fight with u guys  icon_idea.gif

I'm sure Viper will await your challenge!

Hi Mindstorm,

The Big spider Star belongs to the species Plexippus paykulli, which I have kept before. The female of these species are ruthless killers, put two in a container, and only one will emerge alive... The males fight, but are usually just show and  no action....

I am intending to breed the Hyllus diardi, with the aid of my new friend. She (yeah,a girl) has succesfully raised from eggs two broods of the diardi, 3 broods of Hasarius adansoni, and I intend to let her try out Thania later....

Wow, that's interesting... is she into jumper research from the uni or something? or just a keen enthusiast?
Wat's the purpose of the breeding? Research paper?...or maybe top secret...

Blackie win. GP tried to fight but still lost.

YouTube Video

This the longest fighting spider fight. Break Mindstorm record ady.
FS kakis must see this fight.

YouTube Video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cU-QHrgZH04
Blackie vs Razer. Fierce fight where both FS chop, arm push and grab each other till exhausted, rest awhile and continued to fight back. Razer is much more stronger and in control of the fight at the middle of fight. Blackie fought hard but in the end too exhausted and have to retreat. (Blackie fought and defeated GP earlier).

Great fight!

OMG. If i didn't see it with my own eyes, i wouldn't have believed such a fight was possible! You didn't say it wrong when you sms me to say that ur fs fought olympic style! On this 6th day of the olympics and ur fs are in it! Even boxers or ufc has 3-5 minutes bouts. This fight beat the previous record by a mile man. Razer and Blackie is so evenly matched and so UNBELIEVABLE resilient, they simply refuse to stop. When they got tired they just took a rest, almost oblivious to the opponent beside them and then resume when they rested enough and meet eye to eye. Incredible. They did take a couple of long rests...
2.38-3.17 - 39s
3.52-5.02 - 70s
5.36-6.00 - 24s
Adds up to about 2 minutes 13s. The fight ended at 6.11s. Although there are minor breaks besides the 3 long rest... i would say it's pretty active resulting in active fighting for about 4 minutes! Insane. If all fs fights are like this, i bet fs fighting would long have been a national past time!

Which was right and which was left at the beginning of the fight? Was the blur one on the left Blackie?

0.19-0.22 - which was the spider that did the leg grabbing and which was the one that broke away first? Was it blackie the broke away? Amazing, that it turn back to fight again.
0.49-0.54 - i thought that wld be the end for the fs that kena chop... it looks beaten up...but oh no, that was just the beginning...

This fight has so many holding bites, there must be lots of venom being exchanged
0.20 -teeth biting
0.29-3.36 - teeth biting
1.13 - teeth biting
1.21-1.42 - leg biting

I also noticed...
2.55- blood spitting
by the top fs

Can see in the middle of the fight, these 2 fs are so exhausted, arms shaking and teeth wide apart as if gasping yet continue to try to tear each other apart......this fs fight is truly out of the world. I foresee this record will remain unbroken for a long long LONG time. Thanks a million, Viper for sharing this remarkable clip.
