Males, so what? Is it bad to keep males?

Why do you want a male and female? Prepared to have 4 cages/tanks at home to separate the mother and father, males and females siblings? Not scared of over breeding?

Hamsters fight coz they are territorial. If you put male and female together also they would fight, same with female and females. Winter Whites are territorial and if your cage/tank is not suitable for it and their living spaces are too cluttered, then of course they would fight. Please don't jump into the bandwagon of just wanting a male and female to see babies crawling around.

The only hamsters that can live in groups or pairs are RC hamsters and Robo hamsters. WW only can tolerate siblings, but petshop ones, once you bring home, they feel it is different surroundings so they would fight for new territory. After some time, even siblings that never fight before would fight in the future. WW fights till bloody. Syrians too.

Hi everyone! I got my syrian not long ago. Should be 2 months now. Whats the actual size for a 2 months syrian? 3 months? 4 months?

When will my syrian reach her fully adult size? Thank you!
*
It should be around 3 inches in length.... but once adult, it can go to 6 inches. They will reach their adult size in 4 to 5 months.

is this cage suitable for one syrian hamster?? thanks smile.gif
*
Oh no, that is not suited. Anyway, if you get a syrian from nezumitaro, she won't agree to this too. That cage is meant for dwarfs. It is an ok temporary cage or carrier cage for a syrian, but never for the next 3 years.

Hmm... I think Zoozone 1 is better to keep Nezu's Syrian if she did put your name in her list, cos her fatsoso syrian is well known of chubby. Bigger than our JackJack when fully grown.

We only keep JackJack alone in ZooZone2 as we think that it's a bit small to keep him in the 2 feet tank as he is too smart to be able to climb up to the top and bite the lid. ZooZone2 is just slightly expensive than ZooZone1 but much bigger, so we decided to buy ZooZone2 instead. Our JackJack now very happy with all his toys and hiding houses. He is the king of the 'mansion' laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif The rest os our Syrians is still babies and 2 of them still growing, will see how they go. Already uploaded some pics of them and the cages in the earlier posts biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif I'm still waiting Blurjoey to take some latest photos with his camera brows.gif brows.gif

Hey guys, it's been 2 days since my hamster has given birth now! So far I've only separated the male and mother hamster, and have been keeping the mother hamster it a dark part of the room and only been going near the cage to feed her(cause I'm scared she might eat the babies or something).

What should I do next?

I've read the rules. I just wanna know what to do after 24 days and what else to expect.
Personal experience for feedback would be useful.

What you have done is good enough. You can give some fresh veggies, bits of cooked chicken meat or dry dogfood.

You should only start to clean the cage with partial wood shaving cleans after the hamster babies are about 10 to 14 days old. Then you can start handling the babies once they are about 16 days old already.

well, when the babies have reached 1 month old, separate the males from females.. yup, u need another few cages to do that.. also never breed the female again until after 3 months at least.. just be prepared that ur expenses will shoot up double or maybe triple..

She did eat a quarter of dog food pebble tho, is a quarter enough for the whole day?? she ate only a quarter of it. another question, why isnt she eatin her fav seeds and corn and the pre-mixed??? wut is wrong wit her? do all hamsters take food from your hand just when they want to? Mine has always taken all the food from my hand but today she hasnt. could her teeth be too long or somethin?? she's still active, but she's not eatin food. I wonder where she gets the energy. and she hardly bites her cage but today she's bitin the bars like a psycho. ppl, please tell me wuts wrong wit my hamster.

its normal, nthg 2 worried about. The surrounding environment might cause the hammy did it.
As for biting cage. its more normal.. to avoid biting cage, i think u better buy some bitting bars for them.

it could be becos she has stored some food in her cheek pouches n start eating from her stored food instead of new food u give her.. nothing wrong with that.. u dun have to worry about hamster eating as long as u have enough food available.. she will find food according to her own timing..

biting the cage is a very normal yet bad habit.. to prevent it, provide mineral stone in her cage.. mineral stone can be found in pet shops, some with funny shapes like carrot n corn.. providing wood to chew on will help to a certain extent only, becos metal bars taste 'nicer' than wood.. anyway those who keep hamsters in tanks or storage boxes do not face this cage-biting problem, which is good..

Thanks nos n jayniel for the quick replies. Im glad there's ntg wrong wit my hamster biggrin.gif . im a noob at keepin hamsters. three weeks ago, i bought Chubby(or fei fei, she really very fat) and a new basic cage tht comes wit everythin but, sadly, now i need to get her a new plastic tank or somethin wit no metal bars. Argh. I wonder why ppl still sell cages when hamsters have a bad addictive habit of biting the dumb bars. I did give my hamster chew wood to wear off her teeth, bt noo, she wants the metal bars instead. Was just wonderin, is there a way to stop (or train) a hamster from bitin the cage besides placin her in a tank wit no bars and givin her chew toys?? I noticed my hamster is eatin up all the metal bar paint..even her mouth seem to be like the paint color. im worried she might get cancer or somethin...will she?

The only way to stop is to change the cage to a tank. People sell cages coz it gives good ventilation and some are not bothered with the biting.

The bar chewing is a bad habit. But the worst part is a hamster can get metal poisoning if the chewed parts are rusty. Petshops of course won't advice you, and certainly not many caresheets advice this too....

When metal comes in contact with saliva, it becomes metalic and salty, which causes the hamster to chew more coz of the taste. No matter how much wooden toys, or mineral stones or whatever chew toys, it will always chew back the cage bars.

If your hamster becomes skinnier, it would mean she got some teeth problem. Check the teeth to make sure not overgrown.
