Firmware Change :

R6G04 (Latest) :
~ Calendar Day View now comes in half-hour interval
~ USB charging option and USB Display on connection option is now moved to "more" menu
~ Improved overall speed
~ Much faster camera focusing speed
~ Camera focusing interface now comes with a center square bracket to let you know where you are focusing.
~ Camera focus status icon will not refresh immediately if focusing mode is changed using shortcut key (4).

How to check your firmware version
Go to Main Menu > More > System information
under the organizer, the last five words is your firmware version (example : R6xxx)

How to update the official firmware
If you do not have the latest firmware, you can simply use SONY Ericsson Update Service (SEUS) to update the firmware online. To do this, you need the USB cable, P1i with fully charged battery, a PC with SEUS installed and an internet connection. Download SEUS from http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/download/1...up-2.7.12.4.exe. After the installation, just proceed with on screen instruction and it should be relatively easy. Upgrading firmware through SEUS is an official method and is fully covered by warranty in case anything happen during flashing. Take note that upgrading the firmware will ERASE EVERYTHING inside the phone. Latest firmware does not released for all region at the same time, if you're eager to get the LATEST firmware once they are released, proceed to read about Generic World CDA and how to hack them below.

Chinese firmware
Some of the set doesn't shipped with Chinese firmware and therefore you cant read nor write mandarin character on P1i. If you just need chinese support to read the messages and characters from your files, simply go to the FAQ section below and read the instruction on how to get mandarin character reading by using the font substitution method. If you need a full Chinese support with both reading and input as well, proceed to read about CDA, methods of changing the CDA and finally flashing HK/SG firmware below.

Keep in mind chinese firmware have few differences such as i) no white borders in handwriting system ii) Slower handwriting recognition iii) no anti-aliasing support on fonts iv) have an extra lunar calendar

Tips & Tricks

* Holding the back button in standby will lock/unlock the phone
* Hold the back button to return to standby
* press Y for yes in dialogs
* Press N for no in dialogs
* Press ALT twice to turn the respective key to their alternate function permanently until you tap ALT again. (useful for java aps that only recognize numerical keys
* Press up (left bottom corner) twice to turn into capital letters permanently until you tap it again
* Disable wifi to preserve battery life, it still drain power even though in sleep mode.
* Turn off 3G to save power if you don't use it as it draws some power when the phone switching back and forth from GSM n 3G. go to Main Menu > control panel > Connection > mobile networks > More > GSM/3G networks.
* avoid using USB charging as it is reported has very short standby time even it's fully charged
* use TrackID through wifi is free

Problems & Bugs / FAQ

Known Bugs & Problem :
~Tickbox selection inside application will gone missing if you accidentally pressed and entered other thing.
~ Camera has green tint issue on lower right corner.
~ battery meter showing 98% even when fully charged (fixed in R6F41)
~ Ringtone changed to default when changing to themes with no ringtones attached. (thanks to karlcheong for pointing this out)
~ Arranged software icons inside specific menu would go back to original location if memory stick removed (if the software is installed in memory stick)
~ When a call is ended there will still be a blank dialog box shown and you need to press back again to get back to standby menu
~ Camera focus status icon will not refresh immediately if focusing mode is changed using shortcut key (4). (Only in R6G04)
~ there will not be an notification sound when receiving items through bluetooth beams

FAQ
Q : Why i couldn't login into some of the hotspot while other just work fine?
A : P1i doesn't not support flash and therefore hotspot login tat is using flash interface will not be useable. also note that if hotspot is operating under Wifi-G only mode, P1i will not be able to connect to the network.

Q : How do i view system information / firmware version?
A : go to main menu > more > system information

Q : how do i access the service menu?
A : by scrolling the jog dial up and down, do the following combination trick : up,*,down,down,*,down,*

Q : How do i calibrate the touch screen like the one in windows mobile?
A : go to Main menu > Control Panel > Other > setup wizard. It is available at the last step.

Q : How do i setup the phone for receiving Gmail?

Q : can i enable chinese support without messing the firmware?
A : you can add support to view chinese fonts but not input. download the file here unzip and then create a folder called resource/font inside your memory card and put the files there. restart your phone and voila, you should be able to read chinese words (credits to the author at http://secentral.net/forum/index.php?topic=12325.0)

Q : Why i'm not able to stream the video from the mobile youtube using wifi but it works fine with 3G?
A : The reason behind this is the port is not forwarded. If you accessing using home network, simply forward the port from the router. Public network currently has no solution yet

Q : What is the different between P1, P1i and P1c
A : There's no such thing as P1. P1i is what we're getting, the i suffix stands for international. P1c is specifically meant for china, with 3G radio taken off due to licensing problem

Q : What is the difference between P1i and W960?
A : They basically share the same hardware structure except W960i comes with 8GB flash memory, memory card slot taken off, pre-installed with Walkman 3.0 software and using normal 0-9 keypad while P1i has QWERTY keyboard, M2 slot and has business card scanner.

Q : Nokia N95 (Symbian S60) versus SE P1i (UIQ3) versus WM6 device, who wins?
A : a very subjective issue and each of them have their own strength. Suggest that visit a proper Nokia/SE/HTC retail store and test them by urself. N95 has weaker battery life (not sure about 8GB version though), no touch screen while P1i is a lil hard to get used to for first timer and slower response time while WM6 is known for strong software library and being expensive

Q : is there any way i can turn my p1i into W960i?
A : the current answer is, no. but there are people working on it, at the mean time, you can have the Walkman 2.0 installed with some hacks. refer below.

Q : Does P1i support GPS?
A : P1i doesn't have GPS antenna and therefore have to rely on external hardware. Currently the only which has compatible hardware and malaysia map is Garmin and SONY Ericsson HGE-100 GPS adapter. There are other compatible GPS out there but i cant seems to find one with Malaysia map.

Walkman 2.0 Hacks

You need to Unlock the access to file system first before you can attempt the hack, hence i include full tutorials from Unlocking file system access to installing the Walkman 2.0 software. If you already unlocked the file access system, simply start doing from step 12

Step by Step Guide :

1) Download the Walkman 2.0 software here :  Walkman_2.0.zip ( 728.7k ) Number of downloads: 390

and AppTRK file system unlocking tools here : http://www.filefactory.com/file/06fbbc/ or here http://rapidshare.com/files/109987458/Apps.zip.html

*you need SE PC suite installed first

2) Connect your phone using PC suite under "phone mode"

3) unzip and Install AppTRK.sis on your phone

4) Install following software on your PC in order :
i) python-2.5.1 on your PC
ii) win32-py2.5
iii) pyserial-2.2.win32

5) copy 1.py to your C:\

6) Go to Device Manager on your PC, under "Ports (COM & LPT)", take note of your P1i connected port

7) open 1.py you copied previously on C:\ with notepad. search for the line "ser = serial.Serial(4) # I have COM5" (without quotation)

8) now, change the COM5 to the p1i connected port you noted from device manager earlier, and change serial(4) to the port number minus 1. Save it.
(example, you noted your p1i is connected to COM7, change the line to "ser = serial.Serial(6) # I have COM7")

9) Run AppTRK from your mobile phone with USB cable connected in "phone mode", it should be showing "connected"

10) go to DOS command prompt (type CMD in run for those who don't know) and change the directory to C:\

11) execute 1.py (just type 1.py and press enter), wait for it to run, until it showing Close, End+exit.
*you have now successfully unlocked the file system.

12) Unzip and copy the Walkman 2.0 files into your memory stick and then disconnect the USB cable

13) open a file explorer on your phone(i used Swiss Manager in this case), copy the file one by one from memory stick to C:\ drive according to their directory. REMEMBER DO NOT OVERWRITE THE WHOLE FOLDER IN C:\ IF THERE'S FILE INSIDE IT, you might screw up the whole phone.

14) Restart your phone and you'll notice a "Walkman" application under the tools menu. Enjoy.

i am really wondering is it worth it to throw my brick away for this new baby?

And is the camera's performance acceptable?

VGa Front camera how many mp erk?

If you look in the previous thread, many people complaint about the green tint problem affecting photographs taken with the P1i. It only affects like a part of the photo, usually the bottom-right section of the photograh. I find this unacceptable as it cannot even be fixed properly with Photoshop. There are people complaining about this in other forums and it is confirmed it is a hardware problem, not firmware. However, not sure if newer batches of P1i might have this problem or not. Also, some lucky P1i owners do not have this problem too when they bought the first batch, IIANM.

I was wondering if there are any users who sync with iSync on a Mac and if the calendars, contacts, to do lists sync properly ? I am currently using N73 seamlessly and is thinking to buy the p1i if it works with my Mac. Please let me know. Thanks.

if you're currently happy with what P990 offer, you definitely will love P1i.

cant really comment on N95 as i never truly owned one.
but i seriously cannot withstand the battery life of N95 i came into contact wif. The battery barely last a day with normal usage. but i believe with so many users satisfied with N95 out there, battery life should have improved along time.

Thanks for the tips. I am looking for a 'power phone' with a good camera.

I am loving my P990i for its capabilities, but hating it for its sluggishness due to its lack of RAM.

sluggishness still exist in P1i but should be better than P990i as the extra 64MB ram make it virtually can run tons of things at once. One thing you will like P1i over P990i is its incredible stability.

Speaking of camera,i'm actually kinda very satisfied with the quality as the green tint wont be really noticeable unless there's a lot of similar color across the whole photo.

I noticed that on the live pictures of your p1i, your keypad doesn't have an extra symbol on it. Mine does.

Hmm, for example, on the number 6 pad, there is a question mark symbol above the 'k' letter.

The P1i has more RAM and a faster processor. It will be faster, but not by a lot due to the limitation of the Symbian UIQ 3 operating system.
I think better if you just keep your P990i. The P990i is a lot better compared with the P1i when it comes to making calls and typing out quick SMS due to the flipped mode.

Same for my P990i, I almost always use the phone in flipped mode because it feels so much faster than the non-flip mode. It is just like using a K750i/K800i. I think you know this too.

I just change my cda from HK to GW1 last nite (@2-3am) and then update the firmware to d latest one..to da max.....yeeehaaa..thanx dude for the step by step instruction on d 1st page..
but 1st time after change the cda,i check my system information it got weird cda,organiser version there.after i restarted n update the firmware then it become normal..is it always lke that?

i dun think the processor is faster but the RAM is definitely doubled from P990i

the answer is no.. cuz i was using a spare fon... so all my contacts should be there... i have yet to try placing another simcard in... at work now.. cant play with it... >.<

..so hapy wit my new CDA..no more chinese keyboard n chines handwriting..i discover that with this now my handwrtng recognition is much faster n more accurate..another thing is the virtual keyboard key is much bigger and easily used (since there is no more option to change to chinese language)..

hmm. that's weird, my phone is fine with copying contact. i'm just a lil bit annoyed by it being so picky about how to determine the first name and last name.

i just flashed to sg chinese firmware. i'm happy with mandarin word accuracy but i'm fed up with english alphabet have to spare some lagging time between words.
also, i noticed the white borders is gone in SG firmware. i cant see shits when i'm in dark theme.

the answer is simple..urs is just like mine.both our phone is chinese based phones..like from HK or SG..for normal phones from other non chinese language dont have those weird red symbols on the numbers keys..(ur question mark on the 6 key is red color isnt it? n another question mark on P key is white color..)

Bout ur contact problem..i think d contacts from simcard was not fully saved from ur previous hp..thats y just partial got into ur P1i..bcoz P1i contacts shud ave no problem and since from the end of startup wizard the hp asked u to copy contacts from sim..i did twice since i bought n reflash CDA..no problem..

just my thougth tho..

if normal SMS + music + browser ?

i think latest firmware should be R7A, my s'pore CDA is showing R7A...

Browser : Opera 8.65 tends to slow down when loading page with complex scripts. read that opera mini 4 is better but i haven't try it out.

i know thats not the prob.. cuz i moved my simcard from my n80 to another fon.. *while waiting for my P1i*... and all the contacts were there just fine.. and i jus tested with another simcard.. same thing >.<

what firmware u're using?
try upgrading your firmware first if it is the old one. if problem still exist, most probably its a faulty phone.
The first P1i i got was faulty. hanged everytime i try to copy my contacts

hi, i have a very stupid question here, as i m noob in this areas, and willing to try out this p1i, can this phone install messenger which support msn, so i can msn via wifi, and do this phone support microsoft office?...

ok, there's a lil problem right now... am not sure it's the firmware problem or the phone problem
recently seem like there's intermittent issue on my phone to detect the m2... sometimes it seem like cant detect the m2 and all i need to do is took the m2 off and plug it back again...
symptom like :
1. out of sudden ur ringtone change back to default(if u set the ringtone already)
2. if u're using gdesk, ur whole screen will turn blank and white, cause it cant locate the gdesk design file, can cant even close it, need to force shut down by took off the battery
3. all the app u install restore back to the tools folder eventhou u already move them to other folders


anyone encounter the same problem?

hi all, may i know how 2 change the icons for p1i? as i dl some themes from a site, the photo shown in the site that the icon is different. but when i installed and apply that theme, my icon still remain the original 1? how can i change it??

Most probably going to get it, cause GF say it looks cool and no need to learn how to use the software since I am using P990i.

BTW, is it difficult to adapt to the keyboard?

There are software that can support not only msn, but also yahoo, skype, google talk and icq. eg Fring (most popular), eBuddy, EQO

This phone does not support microsoft office, but it have Quickoffice which can open and edit microsoft office file (word, excel, powerpoint) If want more powerful tools then use Document To Go

i dun feel any difficulty to adapt to the keyboard...i love this keyboard, it real easy to use...i dun even use the stylus at all...

If u r talking about the shortcut icons in the standby menu, then its easy, copy the icons (PNG or JPG) from PC to M2, select the icon by scrolling with the jogdial, select more>edit>shortcut icon>Browse....there u have it

i haven't used HK firmware before but between my previous USA, GW1, SG English and SG chinese firmware, GW1 happens to be the most problem free and fast firmware. It should be slow at first startup, once loaded inside ram it's going smooth

seems like your slot is starting to have problem.

your firmware is already latest.
try reflashing as mentioned by d@odao, following the on screen instruction of the SEUS program is a very easy process.

if yours is original try and go to the service center and see if they would change the camera module as someone overseas reported that SE actually acknowledge the problem and change the sensor for free

yday notice that if sms come in, it doesnt give any indication or sound at all, even though i already double check the setting, not sure is bcoz of the new theme i appy, but after changing back to default theme, new sms still no indication. i only manage to resolve it when i off and restart the phone.

Why is that? anybody exp. it b4?

Hy guys..anyone has change their P1i main menu icons?? quite interesting

I went to the authorized SE service center, I'm told there's no solution YET on the camera issue. They don't have any other camera module to exchange cos is all the same. I'm told to wait while they will pass this matter to the SE. Heard all cybershot having the same problem, but is the yellow tint. Any other solution on this?

I don't there there's a solution as the problem should be hardware-related.
I've been searching everywhere online for a way to fix it because I also want to buy a P1i.
But then I can't seem to find anyone with a solution to fix it.

According to the service personnel, many cybershots models have the same problem. Is that true? This is a serious quality control issue. Can't believe it happens in a Top Japan corporate.

I don't think so. The K800i/K810i does not have this problem. Not sure about the rest.
But the problem is so obvious, I can't believe their QC passed it.

Well, I think they aren't making that much money anyway. A lot of their models are nowhere near compare to rivals such as Nokia.

SONY has a reputation of mass producing garbage imaging sensor. remember the case where all the CCD sensor in almost every major brand camera have to be replaced? It's a SONY

Is ur's a ori or ap ? How much did u get it for?

Yeah. I remember that. lol. Furthermore, those sensors were used as OEM in Canon cameras too.

i was actually shocked to knew that canon uses sony sensor. i thought they were the expert. but the fact is canon is the expert in CMOS not CCD
hmm...maybe next time SE can uses canon CMOS sensor. less problem

the icon on the standby menu are all exchangeable.

so meaning I have to LIVE with the green tint? Oh no. Luckily, I seldom use the camera and still a conventional camera believer. But, I will not give up, I'll keep pushing the SE. I'm gonna write a complaint to their world wide SE service center now!

i been using my old junk P900 for almost 3 years..so far so good....somehow planning to switch it to P990 but sudd i saw all the good review of this P1i...so do u guys think for a person like me who like all the features in P900, should jump to P990 or P1i??

if P1i, beside than warranty,whats the diff between AP and Ori set since there is diff of few hundred between this 2?

skip P990 and straight to P1i.
P990's little ram and stability issue is not worth it anymore as AP set is just few hundred difference with P1i.
Ori you get top notch warranty service. AP some provide you with 18months warranty now but sometime their service can make you vomit.
go for ori if you can afford it.

I don't like Fring, less features. I prefer Slick. I can add emoticon & do nulge. It only supports yh & msn msg though. I use iskoot for skype. But if u like me, who only use msn, slick is better and is free.

Added on January 8, 2008, 3:25 pmTo me, I have not used p990. I used few smarts phone like the old N70 & N73. IMO, i think P1i is the best smartphone I've used so far. Is very responsive & stable. My phone had hang once so far, and it was becos I was testing the max out of it by opening many many applications. After off and on, everything will go smooth. The price for AP is PURFET. I am a bit regret to buy original, cos it doesn't help me in my problem, the one and only problem, GREEN TINT! I say go for AP set. The phone just too good to have problem in 1 year time, I think. U won't need the warranty.

However, if you r not a wifi user, and a intense multimedia lover, u should consider LG Viewty. About the same price with the ori P1i. Heard many good things about it. But not my choice, cos it doesn't has the wifi.

alarm having problem? i nv notice this as i seldom use the alarm function. Already went to the shop where this P1i was bought, they will replace one new unit for me if there is new stock by tomorrow, hope the one they are replacing me will not having green tint issue anymore
