Microsoft denies HD DVD-equipped 'Ultimate' Xbox 360http://gaming.monstersandcritics.com/xbox3...ate%92_Xbox_360QUOTE Not one to emerge from the corporate shadows to comment on rumours - beyond the obligatory 'we don't comment on rumours' statement - American software giant Microsoft has this week broken form by responding to speculation surrounding the imminent unveiling of the HD-DVD-equipped 'Ultimate Xbox 360.'
While Net chatter has suggested that the 'Ultimate' model of the Xbox 360 is to be announced by outgoing Microsoft chairman Bill Gates at next week's CES 2008 show in Las Vegas, the Redmond-based tech company has moved to crush the growing rumours underfoot.
"We have reiterated multiple times since launching the Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player that we have no plans to integrate an HD-DVD player into the Xbox 360," a Microsoft spokesman said in a GameSpot report. "We feel that offering the drive externally is the best way to give consumers the ultimate choice to create their own high-definition experiences."
Interestingly, Microsoft's reiteration arrives alongside news that Hollywood media behemoth Warner Bros has decided to sign its HD movie content exclusively to Blu-ray from May of 2008. Blu-ray is the native high-definition format hosted as standard in the PlayStation 3 videogame console.
According to Warner Bros, consumers "have clearly chosen Blu-ray" in the HD format war, and a two-format landscape is only promoting "consumer confusion and indifference toward high definition."
Those keen to keep the rumours alive to some degree will note that Microsoft has stated that the 'Ultimate' Xbox 360 will not be announced during CES 2008, just that it definitely won't contain an onboard HD-DVD player.
According to the initial burst of speculation, which was sparked by a report in Stuff magazine, the 'Ultimate' Xbox 360 - should it exist - will arrive with 1080p, HDMI video output, built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, cool-running 65nm architecture, a "near silent" fan system, and a rather hefty 320GB hard drive.
Bill Gates is scheduled to give his final CES keynote as Microsoft Corp. chairman tomorrow (Sunday, January 06) at 6:30pm.

This is such a rumor. A false one. Something in my guts say "Microsoft will NEVER make a built-in HD DVD drive for Xbox 360"... They (or Bill Gates, who knows) keep on saying ... "We want to give gamers the choice to choose whether they want high-definition DVD drive or not. Its not really what most gamers want, so we let it be choice." But what does Microsoft say to... Blu-Ray built right into the PS3 unit? Why not just make a built-in HD DVD Xbox 360? Is it so hard ? This post has been edited by Xbox 360: Jan 5 2008, 08:28 PM

MORE SHOCKING NEWS!!http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3165235Microsoft Already Working on Game For Next Xbox?EGM's Q-man gets word that Microsoft is already working on its next console. In the latest issue of EGM, rumor hound Q-man got a really interesting tidbit from a mole at Microsoft: a secret first party sequel is already being worked on for the next Xbox console. According to the magazine, the game was originally planned for the Xbox 360, but was recently moved over to the next Xbox console. It's not uncommon for platform holders to begin working on new consoles and launch games years before they actually come out, but this could point to the next Xbox console not being that far off. So what sequel could it be? Hmmm... a new Halo? The next Forza? How about the next Perfect Dark? Oh, or maybe Fable 2? Kidding. For more rumors, not to mention an issue packed with previews of some of 2008's biggest games, check out the February issue of EGM, hitting newsstands shortly. "a secret first party sequel is already being worked on for the next Xbox console." "...denial is the most predictable of human nature..." -Anonymous

HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray ? Again ?
Both offer "almost" the same picture quality, 1080p.
Blu-Ray has higher storage space. Does not matter.
HD DVD is much more affordable.
Factory manufacturing of HD DVDs are much easier.
Blu-Ray requires an entirely new technology to make it.
As Microsoft themselves say "HD DVD can use existing technology to be built whereas Blu-Ray, you're looking at a higher price as it requires much more advanced technology to be built."
HD DVD is the way to go "If you want to watch high-definition movies without a hole in your wallet."
Or you can just get a PS3. As for me, I dislike the PS3 and its games (even on the PS2). While it has Blu-Ray, I don't mind spending a little more just to add the HD DVD drive... perhaps in the future I will, not now.

....
In the end
HD DVD = Blu Ray
Both 1080p
Happy ?
One is more expensive while the other less expensive.
One has "slightly" better image quality while the other is equally impressive.
One comes with the PS3 while the other needs to be added on the Xbox 360 which is fine.

This thread is amazing... at one point there was a heated debate of whether the Xbox 360 Ultimate is real or not ... then .... format wars... At this moment Blu-Ray > HD DVD HD DVD is still "existing", if at all something "big" happens to Blu-Ray just once more... I guess HD DVD has been entirely been defeated...
