have anyone here bought their dslr body or lens or speedlight from Japan? is it reccomended because after conversion , it's still cheaper than a 2nd hand unit.

do we really need warranty for lenses?

If you don't mind risking the warranty, of course you may go ahead since it's cheaper. If you think that warranty is crucial to you, buy local set.

Also, you have to have be ready in case item went missing or the seller went MIA.

There is no tax for camera products in Malaysia.

Canon don't provide international warranty for their cameras. Only Olympus does.

I see. Last time, I brought a Sony video camera from Hong kong and take it to local here service. No problem at all. Even they replace a new set for me after they give up the repair.

For Nikon, the body is local warranty, but the lens is international

lol. I guess this will be a very informative post for me. I'm going to Tokyo, Japan soon and is planning to get an entry level DSLR. The 400D in Japan only cost around 1.7kRM. SO tempting to get one but still in serious consideration due to the warranty. hahaa. Might get Sony A100 instead if they provide international warranty. lol. X]

LOL. I'm going with my family only le, so might be buying it for personal use. Am afraid of tha taxation too if i bring too many things back. Heard from my dad that tp get the Japanese visa done, we have to show them we already have 10KRM of cash in hand, Japan's kind of strict. But probably a lens or two i might be able to help la. Yeah, 400D but the warranty worries me. lol.

I just came back from japan, and the cameras and rechargeable batts are cheap! There is an area in tokyo where the electronic gadgets are cheap, but i cant remember the name of that place...It was tempting to get a dslr... though no money =.= but my dad did buy a nikon s200... no international warranty though, but he figured it was worth the risk. But so far so good ^^ However, i'm not too sure i'll buy an slr without warranty.. unless of course the price differents is enough to warrant another trip to Japan ^^

Alright, bro. found it like at 3.3k at kakaku.com. Hahaa. Is the price there 100% accurate or it's just some gimmicks? Finding the price for a 400D kit now. Sigh.

And Xannava, i think the gadget street you meant is Shinjuku. Heard from quite a number of my frens that Shinjuku offers really competitive prices for gadgets. Can't wait to fly to tokyo now! haha! X]
