QUOTE(funkychips @ Feb 18 2009, 09:33 PM) Hi Awan, you can use coconut fibre instead, as they absorb moisture better than sand. Look for them in garden centres or nurseries, normally labeled as cocopeat. They either sell by block (you need to soak in water to loosen it) or you can buy those in packs already loosen. Very good substrate to use for other pets as well like bugs, spiders, scorpions, reptiles, amphibians etc. Still you need sand for a much suitable burrowing substrate for the crabs. Though its my first time to use coconut fibre as substrate and would like to ask, should i change it after a long term use? Will a damp coconut fibre will lose its efficiency in maintaining humidity? QUOTE(pjdude @ Mar 19 2009, 11:51 AM) Sorry for my lack of activeness in here lately. Anyway, i see alot of health violation for the crabs above. 1. colored sand : not recommended as they have low humidity control. 2. colored shells : Any paint is unsafe to all pets in general. Paint bits into the crab gills will cause swell and life threaten. 3. colored dishes : If you have painted it on yourself, uses a hard brush to brush it. Any excessive paint will fade and prevent it from drop off due to frequent crabs' shell friction. It may look colorful in that way but the key to long crab keeping is to keep the crabitat as natural as possible.

We seriously need someone to represent for hermit crab as many have yet to know about this wonderful creature. Be it land or sea hermit crabs. For land i would suggest to bring Strawberry Hermit Crab as they are easy to be hand feed for public viewing. Bump for attention. Ok, back to serious stuff. Anyone lately visited any pet shops that still sells hermit crab? Do not hesitate to share what you saw.

QUOTE(blitzboy @ May 3 2009, 01:08 AM) I have done releasing of hermit crabs a few times already. I am always happy seeing them joining to the colony in their natural habitat. And Why do I do it at night, although it is dangerous for me? It is because if I release them during the day, they would be exposed to heat and sunlight, and may die from it, if they unable to to find a hiding spot and no other hermit crabs within range. Further more hermit crabs are most active at night. You can release it in the mid morning from 9am to 11am. Best place to release them is under a shady tree or large rock spots, within minutes they will start wandering around for cool spot for burrow.

QUOTE(blitzboy @ May 5 2009, 10:31 AM) at night you can watch many hermit crabs in their natural habitat mah... Haha, thats the winning advantage Adding to your explanation above, marine hermit crab have variable life span in captivity. It ranged from 5 years to 45 years just like the land hermit crab. What pressure them is the water ph level and temperature. True marine hermit crab is easy to keep since it only requires 35% of land and the rest is water so most of their waste will be in water than on the sand.

More updates! large strawberry hermit crab on sale in Pets Family @ Taman Megah, SS24, beside Ming Tian food court! Check first page Added on July 5, 2009, 8:19 pmQUOTE(ron_see @ Jul 2 2009, 08:54 AM) from my experience, i usually use cocofibre be bedding will do. (must dry) Not only dry as we do have raining season too so it will be cold at night. Its best to have a dry and wet column for them to shift around to their needs.then juz put a small delicup to let them drink. They dont only drink the water, they do take dips to keep their inner shell moist for breathing. Being too try will kill them naturally. Best is a dish of sea salt and fresh water, deep enough to submerge the largest crab in your tank. If you have any micro to small crabs with the big ones, put bedding in the dish.feed them with rice , bread , fruits will do. Personally i have not try rice but hermit crab generally eat anything, raw.Hope this put a clearer direction to new hermit crab keepers This post has been edited by onscreen: Jul 5 2009, 08:19 PM

QUOTE(Lawrence93 @ Aug 7 2009, 08:50 PM) hello guys , may i know what to feed hermit crab other than tortoise food , coconut , apple ? please tell me more Generally hermit crabs eats anything. I used to feed mine with banana, soft apple (red ones, avoid green ones), honey drips, coconut flakes, honey coated bread, hermit crab pellets. They eat tortoise food too but depends on their appetite. Dont feed them the same food always, spread out the variety to keep things fresh. It is advisable to have 2 food dish in the tank, 1 with the pellets and the next with fruits etc.. change both every 24 hours or else ants will hitchhike the tank.

QUOTE(ruzman2008 @ Jan 4 2013, 11:07 AM) can mix small n medium? can they live together wihout fight? anyone got experience? Sorry for the super late reply! Hardly check this thread and will make sure I bookmark it for constant checks You can mix both medium and small hermit, as long as you put in the appropriate sized shells for them to change. That way, they won't fight. Hermit crabs are very friendly and close knit to each other. As long as there is a lot of shells for them to change, they will live in peace
