bath them in filtered water or bottled water.

tap water contains chlorine that is hazardous to the hermit crab's health.

Mine bath by ownself. They would just sit in the water dish as they are in a bath tub, soak awhile and crawl out of it. biggrin.gif Fromy my speculation, it soak inself 2 time per day.

Currently both of my crabs is prepping to go through its 6th mouting session.. so i cant do anything or any shifting.. sigh.. so bored biggrin.gif

great to hear that your hermies are molting! biggrin.gif i read that jumbo size hermie molts for 2-3 months! that means you cant get to play with it for so long... >.<

anyway, i got a minor problem here guys. my crabitat will smell even after one day. is this normal? i think its because of the crabworx food+wet subtrate that make it smell.

how ar?

that's why, when you feed your hermit crabs, the food is to be place in a feeding bowl , you need to observe the feeding patern. initially all of them will gather around the food and eat together.

you need to remove the food left overs, when you see your hermit crab isn't paying attention to the food. remove the food bowl, and food bits & shreds on the sand bed. I admit it is a tedious thing to do, for housekeeping your crabitat.

rotting and decomposing organic matter such as food waste will surely make your crabitat smells.

there aren't many shop selling shells for hermit crabs. The shop in 1-utama is so far still selling,

shakehead.gif i am afraid it is due hermit crabs keepers are among the very few of us, and in our population there aren't many of us who really serious about keeping hermit crabs, many have died in captivity because sold to inexperience keepers who just buy it on impulsive or just because hermit crabs are cute. doh.gif

i wonder what impact of us keeping them towards the hermit crab population in the wild. As I said, no one has even captive bred land hermit crab ever in this whole world. Therefore all hermit crabs are collected from the wild.

this afternoon i went to mv pets wonderland. got myself another exo terra water dish and normal salt. (red sea salt package too big and $$)

is normal blue salt ok?

then i got myself another exo terra container which 5-6 times bigger than my previous container. superb quality thumbup.gif best buy!

got myself white sand as the substrate as well. wanted to get the exo terra cave but the entrance is too small to go in. sleep.gif

lastly, went down to carrefour and got myself another two new hermit crabs!! biggrin.gif:D

what do i need for my crabitat some more?

i think they need some ice breaking atm, the bigger ones keeping pushing the smaller one. poor crab.

hi...
almost all of use Red Sea sea salt, normal blue salt is not advisable, however it is only for temporary.
bigger hermit crabs will often push smallers ones away claiming terratory, and right of walkway and also hidding spot.
it is normal, and u will see they will communicate using claws and antennae when they bump into each other face to face. icon_idea.gif

are you saying that red sea salt is still the best? then maybe next trip. but the blue salt wasted la...

btw, one of the newly bought always sit nearby the salt water dish and dip his face into the salt water. he can do this for hours..... is this okay?

when i brought them home, they were so hungry they ate the apple tidbits and crab pellet that i gave them non-stop! honestly this is the first time i saw they eat in front of my eyes hahaha

Added on June 24, 2008, 10:18 pmomg, i went to the shop in 1u that sells hermit crabs...

very disappointing shop.... 5-6 small crabs only. and the shells sold there all round opening and small.

wasted time and $$ purposely went to that shop..zzz

blue salt? is it the RM1/ packet for the fresh water aquarium one? If yes, better throw it away.

By the way, how big the D shaped shell you need? I mean the opening.

2 inches? i look around first. btw, is there a fish picture on the salt packet? Anyway, I dont think you should use it. It could be dangerous. Why not buy a big packet? They last for a very very long time. Or you could share with your friends.
