Hi guys.
I am kinda new to photography. I just sold off my Olympus E500 and suddenly got poisoned by these 2 cameras. They are not cheap but kinda fulfill what we look for in dSLRs.

Points to consider.

Canon 40D body is cheaper. Current market price around RM4k but Canon lenses are more expensive and the flash also more expensive.
Nikon 300D body price already around RM5.6k. You can get cheaper lenses and flash but it has premium lenses as well.

There is hardly any reviews on 300D yet but everyone is talking about its low noise high ISO greatness.

So, guys, which one will you choose and tell me why. notworthy.gif notworthy.gif notworthy.gif
Oh, and correct me if I mentioned something not correct.

whoah whoah whoah now there, these two are obviously two different league of camera. If you have the budget just go for the D300 no questions asked. Its hell alot better than the 40D. you don need reviews about the D300. Its noise control is superb and IMO much better than the 40D. Its the best non full frame DSLR on the market now.

actually lens from canon and nikon are all the same. just that canon tagged most of their pro lens with the L word to differentiate the class.

for the review here's some of them
http://dcresource.com/reviews/nikon/d300-review/index.shtml
http://www.dpreview.com/previews/nikond300/ (<-- hands on preview)

Nikon have alot of expensive lens too, its all about the same. smile.gif

Hot danggg... I wish I got your kind of budget. If I were you I'd go with D300 coz I got the budget. D300 sensor is sligtly bigger then the 40D sensor and 2/3rd to full frame.

If you're going for D300, for sure you'll be going after premium Nikon lenses right?

If so, also consider A700, cheaper body, same sensor, similar ISO performance, built in IS, dual sensor anti-dust system.

Of course D300 better if money isn't an issue biggrin.gif
where u can get D300 at 5600RM smile.gif it's so cheap cause i saw 6300RM on Shashinki biggrin.gif
Canon lenses are not absolutely more expensive than Nikon lenses. The new Canon 18-55 IS & 55-250 IS even cheaper or same price as Nikon lenses at the same class ( compare with Nikon 18-70 ( new 18-55 VR still hasn't release ) and 55-200 VR ) and got very good quality smile.gif

This thread might spark up some heat. nod.gif

IMHO, go and try the cameras yourself. And I can presume that you have read reveiws from dpreview. They're very thorough.

Every single photographer has his own opinion with cameras.

You may work better with a Canon or maybe with a Nikon.

It's your choice with consideration of your own budget you want to invest on camera equipment.

This thread wont do you any good. You need to convince yourself, not others.

get the relatively cheaper ones as u can afford to go for high end lenses with your budget. buying a nikon is a huge turnover for me as i have many canon lenses already.

it's not the camera, it's the person behind the camera.

If TS worried about Canon lenses being expensive, then just buy lenses from third party instead. They are cheaper but could produce excellent results. So expensive lenses for Canon is really not much of a matter.

As for flashes, does TS wants to use one of does TS want multiple flashes for strobist.

when it comes to using flash, i always love to quote a photography old timer (name not disclosed for privacy)

WHAT'S THE SPEED OF "TTL" PRODUCE? ANS. = 1/50,000 SEC. MEANS IT'S SO POWERFUL AND NEED LOTS

so getting a speedlight is like a compulsory thing next to battery grip.

I dont own any of these two. Looking at reviews all over internet D300 gets more vote .. also Lighting system of Nikon gets more point than Canon ( only my thought) I am sure when you aim such level camera budget isnt an issue.

Get in touch with ppl have D300 .. check the thread for D300 you may get a hands on .. real users comment ... not sure if any 40D user around

So ultimate is get to know both before you jump .. it may takes week but u wont regret late.

i played with my uncle's d300 yesterday the buttons have a rather nice touch to it. as its nice to press on...

reviews wise i would personally go for d300 since ive started with a nikon system and i like the 'features' more. but its always down to you, which YOU like. go down to a shop and play around with both cams and see which you would like more.

we can always go on and on about the features ect but at the end of the day it would be u using it...

Are they really from different league? Seems like both are having the same features and stuff except that Nikon as usual has some xtra features. But in term of performance, they both are almost par (based on reviews) except on the ISO matter.

Don't think I will go for premium-premium lenses. My bro in law has some old Nikon lenses. So, I'd probably grab from him and such and buy 2-3 lenses myself.
My usual takes are people, macro and probably scenaries.
As for A700, the other day I took my Oly E500 to YS photo for trade in price. The guy's saliva almost splatted all over me. He says don't buy "lang mun" products. Get either Canon or Nikon and you will not go wrong. Which I truly agree.

Money is always problem. Who see RM1k+ on the floor don't pick up one? He! He! Afford, I guess it is at a borderline. That is why got this question come out la.
As for the price, I uess another thread was talking about the price already. No moe RM6.3k.

That's the problem... You see, I am a noob in photography. I worry if I were to buy the D300,I just disgrace the whole Dark Lords... Kakaka... laugh.gif laugh.gif

I've hold the 40D in MidValley. Its a nice feeling compared to 400D. Its big enough and nicely fit into our palm without twisting our wrist. I tried using the 400D kit lens 18-55 and it was quite fast. But since I am very new to Canon or Nikon DSLR, I didn't know all the buttons and such. So, I did not really try on all the features.

As for Nikon, I've tried D80 before and actually fell in love with the viewfinder. He! he! doh.gif doh.gif
Canon 40D viewfinder is very common but Nikon has something that you feel like you got good stuff. Ha! Ha! And I tried the 50mm f1/8 lens. NICE although it looks like a giant with small didi.

My personal preference is Nikon. Outlook, features, small details. But in reviews, Canon get the same rating as well in almost everything and of course, the price. So, that's why I come out with this thread.

well, i wouldnt know if they are doing any road show as im 1/2 a world away...

if u say that you are such a newbie in photography like you keep insisting on your posts, go with a entry level, but having done that myself, i would say your choice is a right one as i got my d50 about 2 years ago and after shed loads spent on repairs(yes i know this is odd, but what can i say, i have a very itchy hands tongue.gif ) and on equiptments, i now find myself wanting a d300 and a few more primes...

the d300 will keep you good for quite a few years in terms of actual functionality unless u dont get influenced by these guys here tongue.gif

timothyy: well when based on my needs. The D300 is much better. As I look at their functions when I compare both of them:

FPS, Commander Mode(nikon wins this one, while for canon you need extra accessories), noise control, IMO the D300 does better noise control than canon.

^this alone made me drool over the camera. If im rich enough i wont hesitate to get me the D300 and stick to it.

Im no fanboy, I love both canon and nikon. But i do believe its the person behind the camera and the lens does the matter. smile.gif

just my 2 cents.

p.s: D80's viewfinder is definitely bright and big, as I know it's the same one like the one in D200.
