QUOTE(tokyokiller @ Dec 28 2007, 08:06 PM) one way to know is get another wifi device to detect your wifi-enabled pc, find any "Free Public Wifi" or not..but the test method also risk getting the other device infected too if u connect to it, so dont!... |

i think this thread is kind of a waste of time, seriously.. unless u rename the topic to "Victims of Free Public Wifi"... which in the end doesn't justify its right to be in this sub-forum.. kopitiam can lar..
there are lots people infected and will keep on spreading, so just accept the fact.. (no, i'm not talking about AIDS) if we're infected, then what we really have to do in order not to succumb to the effect of virus is DISABLE any shared folders.. un-share them.. confusing? ok, i give example.. Situation (1) - Without Free Public Wifi Laptop A has shared folders, can be accessed by Laptop B through workgroup networking(My Network Places) by enabling Ad-hoc connection. Both these guys know each other and agree for the networking. Safe networking. Situation (2) - With Free Public Wifi Same as Situation (1) BUT they're both strangers to each other and does not know about the virus. So Laptop A, who has his wifi turned on, is not aware that Laptop B has connected to him. Laptop B thought he could really get free wifi service, then he figures out why isn't there any internet activity, so he starts to wander around the network, finally found some of Laptop A's shared folders. That is the effect, Laptop B might copy or modify the files inside, without Laptop A noticing it before its too late. Some of us enable lots of file-sharing(by that i mean more than the Shared Documents folder), some never done it before, also some don't even know how to access the shared files on network. So the chances of the virus "working its effect" is 50/50. With or without the Free Public Wifi, ad-hoc still works as it should be, but we have to take care of our files properly, don't be just like preparing fish on dining table and we don't expect stray cats to come grab & steal it.. If my explanation is not satisfactory, then forgive me, this is just a simple IMHO post... This post has been edited by mooze: Dec 29 2007, 10:18 AM |
