Bad news for me. My 58 year old dad just got the report from Assunta Hospital. He has colorectal cancer, about where his rectum is. He has been having constipation and diarrhea for the past 6 months, and never checked with the doctors about it. Now it's discovered that the cancer is a fast spreading one.. sigh.
2nd visit to the hospital this Saturday, to meet the surgeon, prolly to determine whether or not to have the tumor removed.
Is it going to be expensive? Should I opt for chemotherapy for him after the surgery?
It depends on severity to be honest. If its early stage and the tumour(s) arent deeply rooted then surgical removal of that part of the colon would be able to remove all of them and thus chemo usually not required. However if the cancer has metastasized to other parts of the body or the progression of the cancer is long enough for a high risk of the tumour moving to other parts of the body, then maybe a chemo is opted to delay the progression or to kill off possible metastasized tumour somewhere else. Either way all of this can only be done after the doctor/surgeon diagnosed the severity of the cancer. Hopefully its not too late for your dad and best of luck, hope he recovers.2nd visit to the hospital this Saturday, to meet the surgeon, prolly to determine whether or not to have the tumor removed.
