mayb from the outlook.. it "appear" to b like slr... but the fact is ... d photo taken r not like SLr. 
I think is kinda hard to get even a sony digicam below 1k. unless u dont mind the old model. my suggestion r.. If u really like slr camera quality, then go for it..just make sure u keep 2 eyes on it all the time.. dont get it stolen anymore... its aint cheap

I do agree with kelvinyam.. the powershot series (with TV AV, m Setting) r good start. and if you fully explore ur camera... d result r compatible to dslr. There will be limitation.. A650 is a good one... bt i m sure is over ur budget. Look for screen that can be twist n turn.. u'll find it really useful n u can get to shoot photos at interesting angles/
