Hello, i am really new to the world of photography. I barely shot some pictures using my dad's old Nikon F355. I am considering a new DSLR for myself. Among them are D70s and D80. From the Nikon official site, i hv compared on both of them, and i like D80 for its higher megapixels and wide ISO range and other new features. But one thing that worries me that will the limitation for the camera is its lower range of shutter speed that covers 30 - 1/4000 only as compared to D70s which covers 30 - 1/8000.

My question to all of you as a more experienced photographers as well as professionals, how important is that speed range and should i get it (D80)? Thank you very much.

hmmm, i dont think you'll be utilizing those high shutter speed often, rarely even. So just get the D80 instead. Its a very capable camera. And furthermore you can have the extra battery grip to make your vertical shooting easy breezy. And D80's commander mode is just simply super.

The commander mode allows you to control multiple flash at a distance, the D70s have it too but the D80's 1 are more advanced. smile.gif

true, i havent even used 1/4000 shutter speed in my D80, most of the time 1/30-->1/400 only. D80 uses SD card , which commonly cheap n smaller size.

price for D80 body now rm2800 , i m getting for my fren next week. feel free to join our bulk for other stuff , better bargain.!

hardly use more than 1/4000
unless in my experience
shooting Super GT
using ISO 100 at 1/4000 i still getting overexposed.
so what i need to do is down the aperture.

A used D70s is around RM1800-2000.

For a mere RM400(used)/RM800(new) difference, D80 is the obvious choice.

All price quoted body only.

The difference between D80 and D70 is obviously the megapixels, The 11-AF points, B.grips and some few other stuff.

Ask yourself.

Unless you crave an affordable 10mp camera, go for the D80 but ask yourself do you need the extra features or are you just another casual shooter, if yes, get the D70s then. I even use my old faithful D50 for studio shots till today. The amount of money that you save from buying a d70 could be used to get a decent flash and to start things off get a 50mm 1.8 .

rock on!

Don't u think those features are worth the extra RM400?

Besides the already mentioned, other differences include AF module is the Multicam-1000, viewfinder with larger magnification, slightly lighter body, higher capacity battery, better high-ISO performance.

As a D70 user myself, I root for D80 but I won't buy it.

Cos my next upgrade would be the DX00. Haha.......

Thats what i am thinking on that as well. RM 400 could get me support for a flash that i would need it for quite often, since i am looking for to shot in events like performances, dances etc.. But as scorgio mentioned, those enhanced features are worthy as well especially the 11 AF points..lol..hard to make decision.

i've used both SLR n i say both are good. currently i own D80. yep, D80 is better compared to D70s (megapixel, high ISO handling, AF points) even though loosing on shutter speed (1/4000 compared to 1/8000). D80 have more features. moreover, i love the color D80 produce. but if budget consraints, (RM400 difference is a big amount for some ppl, even for me) D70s is good to go.

If money is an issue, skip D70s.

Look for D70 instead, it's made in Japan, less to no QC issue.

Difference with D70s is only the 0.2in LCD & remote cord slot.

Price for used body alone is only RM1500.

Still got balance to get a SB400, SB600 or other 3rd party flash.
