It's not the amount of MP you have, it's the pixel pitch that counts if quality is concerned.
As a rule of thumb, higher MP means you can print bigger photos but not necessarily better quality. Sharpness do not depend on MP, it's lens dependent.
Having more MP also means that you have more freedom of cropping should you only print 4R size.
FYI, a PnS with 12MP will never outperform a dSLR with even as low as 5MP.
