You can always uninstall service packs.

Added on December 13, 2007, 1:57 amHmm.. I stopped IE 6 from crashing by replacing the new urlmon.dll with old dll. Hopefully the next update will be fine.

I declined the update for IE7. Maybe that caused the error. I use Mozilla Firefox all these while, why should I update to the lousy but bloated IE7. tongue.gif

Can just use the DOT NET uxtheme patcher, no problem changing unsigned theme.

Installed on 3 computers.

First 3 computers, 2 laptop and a desktop, I updated everything in post-SP2 before i update SP3, everything is find and seems to run smoother than previously with SP2

Another laptop I directly update from SP2 to SP3, skipping post-SP2 update, then I check again Windows Update, all important update gone. IE7, WM11, DOT NET is not listed in Microsoft Update anymore.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 not include any major new features, but it include four minor new features that improve the system's reliability and security. Contrary to reports, Microsoft has been very up-front about these functional additions for quite some time now.

These new features include:

Network Access Protection compatibility. Announced years ago, this feature allows Windows XP machines to interact with the NAP feature in Windows Server 2008. This functionality is built into the RTM version of Windows Vista as well.

Product Key-less install option. As with Windows Vista, new XP with SP3 installs can proceed without entering a product key during Setup.

Kernel Mode Cryptographics Module. A new kernel module that "encapsulates several different cryptographic algorithms," according to Microsoft.

"Black hole" router detection algorithm. XP gains the ability to ignore network routers that incorrectly drop certain kinds of network packets. This, too, is a feature of Windows Vista.

Everything seems the same except startup is much faster now. Other than that, all just seems like how it was previously. Probably it was meant better stability purpose.

with xp3, the only problem bugging me is how the explorer handle corrupted file. it tends to restart the explorer.exe. for example, i download a pdf file. due to some reason, the file corrupted or maybe disconnected while downloading. when i chose thumbnail view of the folder contain the corrupted file, then the error message triggered. then, i remove my sp3, the explorer found no errors anymore

I have been using it since 30 Dec 2007.
I did a clean installation by using the slipstreamed disc.

So far so good... It seems to be it is more responsive than SP2, compared for both after clean installation.

I believe the service pack "indeed" improved the performance of the Windows overall and also more effective handling of other applications, thus we see the speed improvements. As we can see, this will be the last service pack for Windows XP family. So far, it explorer.exe crashed once due to the Windows shell, ntoskrnl.exe. smile.gif

It's advisable to fully patch your SP2 before attempting to install SP3. You'll regret if you didn't do so.

Patches for SP2 will no longer work in SP3.

Isn't that because of this:
QUOTE
Windows(R) XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released updates for the operating system.

Which includes post SP2 patches. Unless you're referring to unofficial patches...

Q: How do I replace uxtheme.dll?

A: This is very easy to do.

1. Download the unlocked uxtheme.dll. Extract the file to the desktop.
2. Download Replacer. Extract Replacer to the desktop (create a folder called Replacer and extract the contents of the compressed file).
3. Run replacer.cmd. A black command prompt window should appear.
4. Browse to C:\Windows\system32 and find uxtheme.dll. Drag this file into the command prompt window. Press enter.
5. Drag in the unlocked uxtheme.dll from the desktop into the command prompt window. Press enter.
6. Confirm the replacement and wait for Replacer to finish. Press any key when prompted.
7. Reboot.

already download the v3264 one some time ago, installed and using it now.

ofcoz i know it's not just number changing la!

since it's just some updates from the previous version, im looking for ways to do it without doing it from scratch.

have to download back the new 300MB++ and install again kinda annoying ma.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate 2 Refresh - Now Available On Windows Update

The Windows Serviceability team is pleased to make available Windows XP Service Pack 3, Release Candidate 2 Refresh (XP SP3 RC2 Refresh).

The purpose of RC2 Refresh is to validate improvements to the Windows Update experience with Service Pack 3. Therefore, this beta release will be available only on Windows Update, in English, German and Japanese. Beyond fixes for common Windows Update issues and the inclusion of support for HD Audio, there are no substantial differences between this beta release (build 5508) and XP SP3 RC2 (build 3311).
