Well i tried this on ubuntu, do note mine was Fiesty Fawn, not the latest version of ubuntu. Socat was not installed by default, you will have to download it. As for iptables, i am not sure.

For those whom can login into to WoW after setting up the VM linux fix, but stuck in character screen. Please check that you specify the correct IP of the server you are playing. Often times, it is due to, your iptables and socat IP specify is wrong.

I was having the same problem until i found out that WoW has changed the IP of the server i am playing on.  It used to be xxx.xxx.xxx.27, but suddenly it did not work, and after some poking around i found out it was changed to xxx.xxx.xxx.2. My socat was redirecting to 27, which resulted me stuck in retrieving character screen.
*
to add in, WoW server oftenly changes IP upon long maintainence, and/or big patch days. so as mentioned, if ur having problems connecting despite it working previously, do check if the WoW server IP has changed for you.

(besides following the steps provided earlier in this thread)

Mine dropped from 900 to about 300-400. Used to be lower, but it got higher lately for some reason. Probably suckmyx again.
Anyway, with 218.xxx.xxx.xxx i can get sub 280ms, but now i can't anymore. sad.gif

380-550ms changed to average 250ms all the time! - My experience smile.gif

Here is how I went with a lot of stuff… I spent a few *late* nights after work playing with this and this is what I found.

Before any changes to my setup I have I ranged around 380-550ms during the normal times I play which is around 7PM until 2AM most days of the week, I play on Arthus so my wow server is located in Dallas Texas in the states. Average ping I get from my house to most servers in Dallas are around 220-360ms so I was not going to expect anything lower than 250ms after all this playing around.

I’m with Internode and ADSL 8000/384kbps and located in Melbourne, Australia in the very country part of the state so regional 1 ADSL basically. Clearly getting sick of the lag as it effects my arena play a lot if anyone really know how much latency is important in arena you will know what I mean.

Anyway, 1st I applied the registry changes that where mentioned in a few posts through this thread and they DID still help as of the current patch my latency was around 320-350ms still wasn’t happy so I went out and build up a really cheap computer to put CentOS 5 on it and setup basic IPTABLES/SOCAT using the same type of setup as what was mentioned in this thread. After rebooting everything resetting my modem etc I logged on around 8PM and I was getting lowest 300ms, but it was still spiking 350ms every now and again.

Decided I still wasn’t happy and went the extra mile.. I called internode and went to see if I could get interleaving disabled on my ADSL line but its not possible on ADSL1 (anyone who uses ADSL2 disable interleaving you will get a better latency, just less bandwidth) my research defiantly points that with interleaving off your latency will be better. Seeing I couldn’t do this I decided to go buy brand new phone cables and replaced my old cables with these new ones and then I updated firmware on my modem to the latest and setup the Linux box to be the Internet Gateway as well now instead of my router. After doing this I achieved a latency of 240-280ms in most places only when I went to extremely populated areas would my latency go in the 300’s. In arena my latency was really good sitting 250ms average!

Disabling nagle Algorithm still does help IMO, so doesn’t this Linux box they probably don’t work together but it seems to work well for me, and adding the Linux box to be the internet gateway made a huge difference for some reason.

Just wanted to say thanks for everyone who contributed to helping make this possible, I found all the information useful and easy to follow, but I have a little bit of history in managing web servers so my IPTABLES skill was a little but higher than the newbie’s.

Any questions happy to answer then email me at cbaker@commtekit.com. Anyone else from Melbourne, Australia on here? I’m thinking of getting a box setup to share with 20 or so people similar to lowerping but Free and just for friends and arena players will be limited spots so if your interested let me know. thumbup.gif

Hey guys, I want to ask about lowerping. They advertised that from 437ms can go 147ms. So how good is it playing with this speed? You know, i'm thinking it would be so much better because of the cast bar appears immediately after you hit the cast button.

I'm so used the seeing the global spell cooldown reaching the 0.3-0.6 mark before my cast bar appears and I think its ok....at least its definitely better than after seeing the 1s global spell cooldown running its course still tak ada cast bar appear (1k lag) than really pissed.

I want to know if its justifiable for the extra subscription cost which is almost half of WoW monthly fees. And would having better latency prevents u from overheal too much (I'm a healer) and become more mana efficient.

Thanks,.

Do not use lowerping ..... Its useless in malaysia ,some people are lucky to get that latency about 150ms constant but most people dont get it even they pay 100USD for it.

Registry hack is also useless as blizzard already did that in their patch in 2.4

The only you can do now ... is to get tthe new line call p1max 2mbps . You get around 300ms constant without doing anything because its not using tmnet or telecom.

Added on December 26, 2008, 5:11 pmThose who get only 200-400ms in malaysia and using tmnet streamyx... Post your screenshots and ip address to prove it . My friend using 4mbps in KL ... latency was always 400-500ms.

There's a couple if guides here, which guide should I be following ?

Im thinking of running ubuntu

I'm running C2D E8400 4gb ram, should be grunty enough rite ? But I have spare AM2+ PC anyways, how can i link them up together ? I have a bro who plays WoW too.. How can both of us connect to my spare AM2+ PC if i hosted ubuntu?

How long does this take to setup ? Will I need to do minor tweaks in my settings to get best performance ?

Im a newb at linux

Reviving an old thread.

Done the registry tweak, and although opinions state that this is outdated information and changes have already been implemented with the new patches; I am now enjoying ping of 400ms - 600ms, a significant drop from the 800ms range I used to experience.

I use Maxis Broadband Wireless, and I live on the third floor of an apartment complex, and therefore am very happy with the results. Really enjoy my BG now with way less lag.

Thanks for the tweak tips.

I've tried the registry tweak on both Streamyx & Celcom Broadband (384kbps), it lower the ping for Celcom broadband by ~200ms, down from 600-800 to 400-600, smooth gaming even WG with alot of AOEs. while streamyx almost remain the same. So I think this still work well on wireless broadbond, but not on the fixed line.

Thanks for the insight. Friend says it doesn't do much for Streamyx. I am trying it on my girl's home which uses Metrofon. Her ping without it tops without the tweak at 500ms.

Don't understand why my inferior Maxis wireless connection can top 300ms in a bad location with the tweak. Then again, I am no expert in these stuff. Just cool that it works. smile.gif
