I'm a few years to 30 and have a degree in mechatronics engineering. But I love food; not just eating them but the science behind them. I love to watch people cooking. I'd love to learn how to cook. I'm a big fan of Hell's Kitchen. My passion in food and cooking makes me seriously considering a HUGE career change - from engineering to culinary arts.

My questions:

1) Is it too late for me for a career change? I'm not married (and NOT planning to do so, soon). I did a survey of career opportunities to become a cook/chefs around KL, and I found out many successful chefs starts at early age i.e. right after SPM.

2) How long (usually) it takes to complete a Diploma/Degree in culinary arts?

3) Which School/College (around KL, please) is well-known for their excellence in culinary arts program? How much do they cost?

I really appreciate any comments and suggestions. Long live culinary arts.

Wussup dude!

I went thru the same thing, I'll be 32 end of 2010 & have worked for almost 10 years in Sales, Marketing & IT... after some serious thought, I jumped into it & enjoying the experience!

Currently I'm into my 5 month of doing my Level 1 & 2 foundation at Cilantro Culinary Academy (cilantroculinary.com) and then in October - Jan 2012 (with 6 months practical training) will be doing my Diploma in Culinary Arts. Total cost for Foundation & Diploma is about RM 25k.

Do check out each and every school before u make ur decision, it's well worth the effort.

If ur on FB, do check out the academy @ http://www.facebook.com/pages/Cilantro-Cul...my/104955041602

Hey thx, =)

Heard from lots of friend of mine from KDU.

U can pay to dine in for culinary student cook food.

But make sure u choose those senior 1 Jenior was ok if u r lucky.

For me im from Taylors u must know the person inside, like friend of urs is a student of taylors college studying hospitality or culinary art. u could ask them for dining in they would really love to look for u!!

Mostly they will belanjar u but just the drink u need to pay.

Well, ive been trough the whole CA term i feel was ok. now doing higher degree is more tougher wheeoo... thats why 3 month i didnt update over here.

*Careful, some food handle is not as hygeine as you think, because they r still practicing as stress comes in ur food gonna say bye bye too haha just my advice.

Carefull of preparing Cod fish, cod fish must be fresh to have less fishy smell.
How to get rid of fishy smell? salt water, Lemon Juice, herbs (thats why chinese use cilantro) , Herb oil is the best option for my opinion,ah 1 more thing SMOKING.

Where is ur college may i know so i can add u on the list.

haha..u know how to cook salmon? i no money buy cod la. sweat.gif

doing higher diploma means you learn more ma...not mer?if you know how to cook more, chances are you get to work in better fields.
*
In higher Dip we learn bout management which many industry ppl ask why? Cause we need the handle staff and account to enable the system and company to run. Its not easy though...

FYI...
Hospitality line is one of the highest rate of divorce in the world,
More, dont let ur family involve in ur business it will make it worst.
