Hi there, so you are a culinary student. Your second training would be only 2 months if i not mistaken. I will advise you to try training in restaurant such as dome, Chili's Grill and bar, La Bodega, Victoria Station Steakhouse,Shrooms, Little Havana,Eden restaurant and etc, Don't go for fast food restaurant, they are only good for management not culinary experience . Is ok to train in Hotel, do find hotel with fine dining concept restaurant. I reckon Rossini’s, Ritz-Carlton Hotel, but there are others good one to beside this. If you like french cuisine, try this http://www.lebouchonrestaurant.com/. Not guarantee some of this restaurants accept trainee. Well, all the best in finding your desire training placement.
*
My senior came to Club Med too. they train over here for 3 months...
I will choosing 2 option, Restaurant or Le Meridiante

hmm.. not very cear on that. Taylor's keep on changing concept. I heard now there isn't higher diploma. Student who finish their diploma want to continue further would have to seat degree for 2 years. The new system make student don't have cert for higher diploma. Old batch study utill degree got 3 cert, new batch study until degree got 2 cert.
*
yea heard that.
SO strange isnt it?

HM, study about Hotel,Restaurant, Kitchen. They need to know all...
But, Hotel Management is more stress and lots of work to do.

Culinary arts, focus more onto cooking, but u need understand everything to operate a restaurant,a kitchen. More concentrate of Kitchen and cooking.

Anyway today i start my term 4, Pastry teach by Karm, Eng teach by 1 indian woman, french language teach by 1 hamsap loi( he said himself as hamsap lo) biggrin.gif

can i be a profesional in the culinary course, becoz im amateur and doesnt have speciality to be a chef!

please answer me as quick as you can,please....
*
1st, u cant skip classes like Oenology, it is important for a chef to understand wine. Be open minded.(If u want to stay in malaysia without future plan then i have no answer for u)

Most of my muslim malay friend they dont drink, they just listened and understand the wine, when we serve wine that time, they just smell without tasting it.

What u mean by being a professional?
All Well known chef is work from bottom to celebrities(most of them are butcher)

I think Malaysia do not have any institution offering mainly in baking and pastries only. Le Cordon Bleu does, and CIA does also.

I dont know about the future path, but im really interested in Pastry too.
Do what u r interest dont listen to people say this or that not good.

Both of them are competitor on Culinary arts course.
What i heard from Taylors senior they said KDU is better,
and what i heard from KDU student they said Taylors is better.
So, u decide. France and Swiss.

Besides , in round one marks of KDU are the highest , higher than lots of hotels and other college included taylor i think =\.

If u going KDU please pm me.. we can earn money togeter biggrin.gif

This 1 im not sure, im not supporting Taylors(sometimes i do hate Taylors too).
but, in common sense, most of the cuisine/terminology is came from FRENCH.
and if study taylors u gonna learn french....

all of the above is just my 2 cent, although the cert/partner is swiss, all their teaching may be also base on FRENCH.

Cheers mate hope i answer ur Question.

is there higher diploma in culinary art???? not hospitality, only culinary art in Higher Diploma or Degree...
after i graduate in taylor college in culinary,i want to continue in Thames valley University,London....

how much fee to continue on oversea???
*
most of them is > 100k. i took Le Cordon Bleu and CIA as example. each sem is 30k USD for CIA and 15k AUS for LCB.

But the good thing of this 2 institution is that u could specialize on which department u gonna go for future.(eg pastry,Fine Dinning)

1 of my senior graduated from Diploma, she forward here study by going KDU partnership Uni. which is in Swiss smile.gif

If not mistaken they going to put choclate work in this syllabus also(not sure which year) I think there still got some difference among colleges, for sure3 difference college provide difference things. For KDU your last sem are working in KDU's cafeteria, which means u are the BOSSS!!!
*
almost the same,
in sem 2 we need to serve all the student, inviting our senior /juniors.
So until sem 3 we finished our restaurant, theres no more serving.
Whew finally.

and now sem 4 we operate our own Pastry shop and target for the profit.

2-is it hard to pass in exam of Oenology in Taylor college?

3-How good situation for accommoditon in Taylor college at Mentari Court??
is it SAFE?? is it COMFORT??
*
Ill answer accordingly to numbers.

1) French or Chinese?
Both also in a recommended by the world, French u could go to western country learn and Asian country love it.
Chinese Cuisine, u learn from si fu, go to western and open ur own shop = income

I heard rumors, now, the markets wants something special, new, exotic, delicious! something really come fresh to the market!
people now is fusion cuisine, example Chinese mix with western cuisine!

2) Japanese? to answer you is, no. japanese cuisine uh uh... (i would love to learn that as extra knowledge smile.gif)

I could help u with that also, when in the middle of the course u would have industrial Training(IT) u could choose anywhere u want to go, like Shogon Shook, even Jagoya! dont limit ur knowledge, open wide and accept anything!

3) u have to ask University Malaya whether they accept?anyway, why u want to continue from a private to local U?

Best of the Best? Nah.

---------

1) Haha, alot of people asked this question, it depends, u got the business brain or not? hmm? ^^

2) Oenology? nothing is hard if u properly interest go and study it ^^

anyway FYI we make our own wine from grapes smile.gif

3)hmmm, Mentari, not really.... But if u r a girl better stay with some guys together with ur friends.

Safe? i heard alots of news there eventually.
Comfort? Ok ok la, what u pay is what u got.

somewhere near there have new appartment, safer and more comfort but distant is further abit, and it cost more exp than Mentari court(not recommended u to choose there) if u have no choice some tips for u, rent rooms from agent instead from taylors, they charge 200% for the rent and services

QUOTE(MisterCrono @ Feb 7 2009, 08:25 PM)
FRENCH cuisine of course ... world recognized

regular? define what regular means ... fine dining? steakhouse? roadside stall? still depends la ..

mentari area? personally i dont think so .. i not exactly living in that area .. but that area is full of foreigners .. and kinda alot of prostitute area over there .. my friend -girl - live there don hare to go out alone ...
*
Not really French, Chinese cuisine will earn more than French restaurant. depends on where u open.

Furthermore it depends on what u like actually, for me i find it French cuisine is more fancy and proper, somehow i find some of the Chinese technique and equipment is very useful! especialy their Knife! u could cut everything with it! not like French cuisine require >3 knife to cut something.

(french)
De boning, 1 knife
Fish, 1 knife
Chef Knife, 1 knife

(chinese)
Deboning, Fish, Chef, Cut cooked food, 1 KNIFE!

So, guys go into the course and place where u r interest with smile.gif

Good luck Mate

They said that french cuisine is world recognized. but that's just westerner point of view .  based on what u said i agree ... french cuisine are more to presentation and all those hanky panky things,  while chinese cuisine are more to the technique .. but when u work as kitchen staff under lotsa workload , will you still use 3 different knive to do all those deboning stuff and cutting?

btw, chinese cuisine and pastry chef have kinda high in demand and pay too =) not bad actually . that's one of the chef told me (i type wrong at my previous msg biggrin.gif )

btw, munak991 youre taylor student?
*
under lotsa workload we still use 3 knife, yeah.

Chinese and Pastry is very demanding in market i think.

To share with you guys base on my EXP.
Hot Kitchen, even if u screw up the dish, u could spin and turn around the ingredients to make the dish nice.
But, in pastry, once screwed is screwed. its permanent

and yeah, im taylors student.

is oenology an important subject to be a great chef?
*
Hmmmmm,
Yes it does!
Base on my learning from oenology, why people drink wine together with eating meal?
well it because it play a role of mixing the taste well together.

i tried so many times i never experience it before.
Most of them cheese goes well with wine.

And the basic is
Lean meat goes well with white wine
whereas
Red Meat goes well with red wine.

So far i tried once! it really suit the taste with the wine!

I went Allergro, my lecturer had a wine tasting in that restaurant for us.
We had a set meal each dish has it own wine ^^

The pumpkin soup really goes well with the wine!
its a twist on my tongue after drinking the soup and a slip of the wine. WOW it really NICE!

Picture ^^ i still have it on my PC lol

what u mean by chef?
Exect chef which would earn lots of $$?
U mean graduated from High Dip then can straight away earn lots of $$?

NO!
U work from the bottom to the top! climb the stair!
Certificate which would be as a prove that u have graduated and certify.
and you will be promoted faster than others that come out just from SPM or none.
u r require to have at least a degree for being promoted to Exect Chef.

FYI
For Exect Chef....
u need to wait until the chef die/retire then only u get promoted as a exect chef.

Hey guys, I'm 17 now and I have a big interest in culinary arts. But I have some questions that is bugging me recently.

a) Do you guys who are taking/took culinary arts course undergo Pre-U courses before getting the diploma/degree?

b) I'm pretty sure I'll be going to Taylor's as it's much easier to get a scholarship at there. So, do we undergo this course in the main campus or what? And do we go to France?

c) I have next to zero experience in the kitchen (don't even know how to hold a knife properly). Will the lecturer teach you the basic stuff during the first few weeks?
*
1)Nope, straight forward 2 years diploma program. If u had Pre-u/STPM u could skip Diploma and take Higher Dip 3 years to finish Degree.

2) Its on Setia Jaya near Mentari Court there. not the main campus. France it just a tour to there have a experience on France, how the Toulouse Student life there experience the life over there. and its just like a vacation of course.

3)yes, step by step basic. Advance baking and pastry learn by ur self. i learn all the stuff by myself. trough books and experience. i have less interest on hot cooking but then i still like it so much. because i loveee Cooking.

Hei? guys?

I got a few question, to those who took culinary arts.

1.Is it fun?

2.How much will ptptn loan cover the fee? I heard it grant you only 20k lol

3.Can anyone start working after culinary art diploma? or you need to go into higher diploma and then degree before working..

4.There are no degree for this course in malaysia, am I stuck to overseas or degree in hosp?

5.If I enter degree in hosp. management without culinary art(diploma) and kitchen knowledge can I still be a chef or I go straight to bellboy??

anyone ever visit this thread? lol..it almost look like a graveyard
*
1) it depends, 1st u feel the fun by then u feel the suffer. it could be ur hobby? or will u be it a job for u? hmmm? think about it. Dont take hobby and job together its big different.

2)it depends on ur result SPM/O level/ STPM / A-level. Most of my friends get scholarship o loan.

3) yes u can, but then if just DIploma u cant get to Exec Chef which is the highest rank in kitchen. but then if u got experience to open ur own shop why still need degree? hmm?

4)yup, taylors trying to get Degree in CA what i hear the rumors talking about it.

5)plz state ur question clearly, but then if u got Degree u sure got the knowledge about cooking. and depends if u take Taylors Degree program they got 2 choices, OPtion a/b. which is Management or Engineering F&B

QUOTE(julnoel @ Apr 4 2009, 11:57 PM)
Answers

a) Nope, no PRE-U necessary. 3 credits in your SPM are the minimum requirements to take a diploma in culinary arts/hotel management/tourism management. To continue on to degree, you'd need either STPM or your diploma which you have taken smile.gif

b) Taylor's College school of Hospitality and Tourism operates in the PJ campus, namely the Bali building or Kurnia. Its located in Setia Jaya and is accessible by KTM via the Setia Jaya station. You go to France for a 2 week residency program at the end of your degree year, which is your fourth year smile.gif However you can opt to go for industrial trainings in France provided you are really really good at what you do.

c) Yes, the basics are covered but if you have zero experience/knowledge what makes you think this is the course for you? Trust me, just liking to cook is not necessarily good for you. But they will teach you anyways. smile.gif

Added on April 5, 2009, 12:00 am

1) yes its quite fun if you enjoy these kind of things. however, if you think its just pure cooking then you're wrong because they actually teach you many other things like food science and business math so you turn out to be an all rounder who can not only cook but do a lot more.

2) um this one im not sure smile.gif sorry

3) yes you can opt to work with a diploma smile.gif

4) degree in culinary arts has not yet been introduced yet but the degree that the college offers has 2 options for you to pick. If you graduate with a diploma in Culinary Arts, you are usually allowed to choose between option A and B, and B is the food part of this degree. Option A is more for the rooms division etc students smile.gif

5) Uh i dont understand your question

For question 5, I'm stpm student so it's possible to skip diploma and head straight to degree level but without diploma(basic skills of kitchen) can i still opt to be a chef?

I was told that going this route would lead me to a 3 year degree program in Taylor, instead of 2 year. the option of A or B is supposed to be in year 2 tho

As i said Taylors offered Degree program Op A/B they will cover cooking teaching from basic to the end. NO ned to worried. Cheers
