haha...new thread, new question.

i've read some guitar setup tips and some mentioned that the "knife edge" on a floyd rose bridge can actually wore out. what does this means? how can you tell?

hmmm....i don't know why, but i think schaller FR makes your guitar sounds a bit warmer, since they use diecast metal instead of stainless stell(OFR). could be just me though.

in a floyd rose system can i use diffrent string gauge?
*
yes you can, but you need to reset the bridge to accommodate the new string tension.

well, it's all about comfort really. EVH holds his picks with his thumb and middle finger. you should try every angle that you can hold it and see which one is more comfortable. don't follow other people, it may not suit you.

i thought the only reason why EVH held it with thumb and middle finger is so that it frees up his index finger for tapping?
*
well, he is an extensive tapper. so that way is probably the most comfortable to him biggrin.gif .

or we could put it that he's more comfortable tapping with his index finger, so he hold the pick that way. rclxub.gif

in anyway, it's still comfort 1st, style is just a bonus. hmm.gif

A framed guitar is a guitar that is already useless in my opinion...... ie: Ran it's life span.
Why the heck do you want to frame such a killer guitar? It's one of the best guitars that ever graced our forums, and you just want to NOT play it?

*
agreed. truly unjustified. killer guitars should be played, not stored. sure, it's not that great(and overpriced), but heck, a KH-2 never even comes close to most of our budgets and this guy just wanna frame it?

bought a jazz III pick when i was buying my acoustic strings yesterday. i was never a fan of small picks, but since most people gives good reviews on it, i decide to give one a try.

but dang i hate it! the thickness is ok, but the size is just too uncomfortable. it's really hard to hold. i think i'll just stick with my preferred JD gator grip series 2.0mm. laugh.gif

lesson: when something is comfortable enough, why change?

after awhile...u realise that the excess tip on a normal pick is useless tongue.gif
so i guess ur still missing that excess tip?
*
you mean the rear side? i like it to be there. more comfortable. although i'll use the side tips on lighter pick(.88 tortex) from time to time (in case i misplaced the heavier ones). since the thickness of the jazz III is the same as most XH pick and only slightly thinner than gator grips(2.0), i'll stick with the standard sized picks. unless using a smaller pick that i'm not comfortable with will actually improve my playing? blink.gif laugh.gif

guys,i've dunno how to play guitar
but i'd like to start playing guitar left handed style
is it easy?
*
my 1st question is: are you left handed?

since you mentioned left handed "style" i'm getting the feelings that you just want to play it with your left hand. i don't recall any type of left handed "style", all i know is that people that plays it with their left hand are actually left handed. sweat.gif no matter how they choose to string the guitar.

eh zero...guess what...im a lefty and play right handed...
guess what too tongue.gif
gary moore, mark knophler, danny gatton, johhny winters, duane allman...
yea, all lefty's who play right handed.

typical argument is always that ur dominant hand is stronger, so can fret stuff easier.
*
i can understand why left handed people plays right handed, as it's also easier to find the gear in addition to your argument above.

but why would a right-hander plays with his left hand is a bit weird, don't you think?

btw, you're left handed? wow, if you're playing left handed then u wouldn't be able to play all the cool guitars you own now huh? i can't fret a thing with my right hand laugh.gif (yup tried it some years ago). not to mentioned alternate picking with my left hand.

is it easy to play left handed from beginning?
coz i might opt for a left handed hofner bass, which cost me around rm1.3k ...
so i will not disappointed after bought the bass tongue.gif

u haven't answer the question yet. are you actually left handed? if yes then there should be no problem. if no, it's going to be harder.

always change to new string sets after buying a new guitar. you never know how long that string's been there.

new guitar is strung from the factory, if it was produced in 2006 and you bought it in 2008, do the math. there's little chance that the guitar shop will actually change the strings.

string depends on preference and setup. most new guitar are strung with .42-.09 strings. replacing with a different gauge will require some adjustment to the guitar.

Guys, let's say la if I wanna change from 10's to 11's,what adjustments do I need to do?I heard that truss rod adjustments are needed,so I'm abit scared to mess around with the truss rod.
*
trust rod is a most likely basis, it depends on the original neck relieve. and yes, don't mess with the trust rod if you've never set it up before. it needs experience. plus, the waiting period for it to set-in is a major pain.

intonation is needed. if it's a floyd, then you'll need to readjust the bridge springs too.

actions, that depends on your original setup.

i'd rather stick with p***y strings, thanks. laugh.gif

QUOTE(sean392 @ Jun 23 2008, 11:13 AM)
u need to tighten the truss rod and add a little more stress to the neck i think
i'm not entirely sure tho so go read up before you do anything

i've played with .11 for 2 years, and since i got a floating bridge i slowly dumped down my gauge till.42-.09
=/ light gauge is quite nice actually, u don't get tired, almost at all
lol
*
tighten or loosen depends on the relieve. if the original setup was a really low action, he may need too loosen it to get more relieve for the thicker strings. IMO, loosen is more likely in his case.

i've been using .42-.09 since forever. never had any qualms what-so-ever, join the club. icon_rolleyes.gif
