So fellow LYNers, as you can see I am planning to upgrade and change my current rig [Roland Cube 15x] to something better. I have a few options:

1) Keep the amp and purchase a multi-fx

2) Keep the amp and get stompboxes.

3) Get a new amp.(optional)stompboxes.
-If I do get a new amp i won't have enough cash for a multi-fx.

How would you guys compare a multi-fx to stompboxes? Which is better for a beginner like me to twiddle with? I'm looking to get a versatile rig. Thanks a lot.
Cheers smile.gif

If you already know the tone you love, it's best to get individual pedals....... they always sound better.
My suggest? Get a better amp.
CK Music has some GREAT offers on the Valvetronix right now, which are AMAZING amps...... and bonus, they come with a few effects thrown in also.
You should check definitely check it out.

So if I get something like the 30watt XL series Vox + a EHX Metal Muff would it sound decent?

Metal Muff is fine ...as long as you dont get the one with the "boost"

cause the boost is fvckin horrible ..

i think the amp is most important for you. doesn't matter if you have all the effects and pickups but you're still using a small amp.
i'm still using a small 16 watter, doubt i will be buying any new effects of pickups until i get a new amp.

but i can't get a new amp until i unload my current practice amp sad.gif

i wanna buy a vox ad30vtXL but then i still have my shitty kustom with me...
its just GAS, really. don't need a bigger amp if i'm just playing at home all the time. after all, i already have a distortion pedal to beef up my tone smile.gif

Is there a big difference between the normal Valvetronix and the XL?
And are the built-in effects and amp modulators good enough to cover stompboxes? Planning on getting a 30 watt version.

The effects is enough for a beginner......
The Vox XL has better high-gain models for Metal playing.
Might I suggest, instead of an overdrive pedal, get a good wah like a Dunlop.
The Crybaby from hell is an AWESOME metal wah, but if the cost is too high for a metal wah, get the Wylde Wah instead........ no customization, but is a great metal wah.

Or, if you want a wah with an overdrive, might I suggest the new Slash Wah?

sorry to hijack your thread a bit sweat.gif
blacktrix, you think its worth getting a vox ad30vtxl even though i already have a kickass distortion pedal? means most likely i won't be using the amp's distortion or models..

Yes, yes, yes, yes a thousand times yes!
Besides, in case you feel the need to step on your pedal, just whack on clean mode!

Common man..... any self respecting guitar player should at least have a wah in their arsenal......... I have 2 Plus my various floorboards!

And a fun pedal.... it's all about the wah baby!

Vox XL pawns Roland Cube?

I'm considering a cube, but everyone seems to recommend the vox.

If you want a small 5w amp for rock/metal, then the Microcube still pwns.

But if you're going up the ladder, then yeah, the Vox AD XL is the way to go.

The vox wah is great....... but I find it more for funk or early classic rock.
If you want a more metal wah (ie, not so "breathy" and has a better wah range), go for something like the Dunlop Wylde, Slash or the Dime Wah)...... Or there's always the Morley Wahs that are EXCELLENT for Metal like the Bad Horsie or the Tremonti Wah.
