Im getting a 2nd guitar for this christmas and this is what I'm interested

Ibanez RG321MH
It seems fine but the only problem with it is that in black(I dont really fancy the grains popping out) and blue.I want the mahogany oil finish.

Ibanez RGR321EX
Looks great but basswood?I dunno, but is it okay for metal?

Ibanez SA160QM
The HSS pups are making me think twice.I've the impression that HSS are not good enough for metal tongue.gif .This guitar has EMG Designed bridge pup.Is that a plus?Is it fine for metal?

Epiphone Les Paul Classic
How is it?I heard many people complaining bout under Elite Series epiphones.

Epiphone Les Paul Standard(2002 model)
I can get it,but it's the alder+mahogany model.I've tested it,but it didn't have that kinda crunch.I guess that just because I tried it thru a lousy amp.I'll try it again later

Jackson RR3
I'd love this but I don't have enough money for one of these. To continue saving,I'll have to wait till next year.Worth it?

Ibanez Dunno-what-RG 7 string.MIJ with FR.
Saw this in the local music store, and I think it's MIJ or maybe what the salesgirl meant was it's bought from japan 2nd hand.

Ibanez RG with wilkinson bridge loaded with V7 V8
I dunno the model yet,I'll ask tonight. What's so special bout the wilkinson?

Ibanez RGT42
The neck's broken but it's fixed already.Comes with an Edge III.I know that bridge sucks but the price's cheap.

So which one should I get?I know I should save up for the RR3 but I have NO guitar now.And yes,I'm gonna get a new amp to replace my Laney HCM10 after I get my guitar.I'm pretty interested in the SA160 but it's just the HSS issue and the Les Paul Classic but I think it has a rather fat neck. Thanks for the help.

Added on December 3, 2007, 6:25 pmI'll appreciate it too if you have anything in mind that you wanna recommend.

But how can H-S-S pups not be for metal..?

And EMG = Metal kao kao rclxm9.gif

But seriously, from ur list.. I would go for the Jackson RR3 if I have the budget.

Basswood... Depends la, what is your definition of metal.
Most of the "metal players" use Alder or Mahogany/maple top from what I notice.

Merry Xmas.. hands.gif

So many to choose from. I don't know jack about most of the Ibanezes you listed there but I reckon the SA with SSH are pretty cool, can play metal no problem, they're probably more versatile too.

But if I got the money, I'll get the RR3 with Duncans.

well..pretty obvious for me ..

lets just say..all the guitars you listed above..are at the same price range ..(accept for RR3) ..

means its roughly ...1000-1500 ?

the answer would be .........
....
.
.
.
..

.

Ibanez Made In Japan 7 stringer ....

2nd hand also canot get at that price...

anyway , whats wrong with basswood ..i thought alot of modern metal bands uses ibanez ...(basswood)

HSS combo..you can always change your single coil to a single coil sized humbucker

I find the most appealing to me is the RR3...
I know first hand because it's a GREAT metal axe.

I think the RR3 is the most awesome guitar, but the Ibanez RGT42 also good.

Maybe you should get the RR3,and change the pickup to EMG 81.That should be enough to play metal.

Actually, the loaded JB/Jazz combo is pretty awesome for metal.

Alder bodied guitars with EMG81 sounds horrible, to my ears to be fair. I'm no big fan of actives, so it might be me.

I dunno lah,the Ibanez RGT42 got crack before and has the Edge III bridge. I'm only afraid that the crack with sorta like weaken the neck and might break it in future.I dunno bout the Edge III.I heard that Edge III sucks bad.

I like the RR3 too,but I have to still save up till next year to get one and right now I dont have any guitar to play.

Nah,the dinky's outta my price range unless someone wants to sell one to me cheap XD

Anyway,I'll admit it,I hate the feel of les pauls. That leaves me with

RGR321EX
I like the way the RGR looks, but it only comes with black and blue and I read that the RG321MH is much better.

RG321MH
Not much of a looker, but I heard that it's highly recommended for heavier genres.

SA160QM
Right now,I'm thinking about getting this instead of the RGs.Wise choice?
I'll most probably pop some duncans or emgs in them though.

Speaking of the RG321MH ... If you ever gonna try that one out , make sure you try it with the RGR321EX (which is in the same range, fixed bridge RGs) .. You'll notice how 'thin' the supposedly mahogany bodied RG321MH sounds, and the "Mahogany" body of the RG321MH is so light.

Even the Basswood RGR321EX feels/sounds more solid than the RG321MH.. Weird.

Really makes me wonder what kinda "Mahogany" body is the Made-in-Indonesia RG321MH having? Read that nowadays certain guitar manufacturers normally will just use Agathis wood and just label it as Mahogany, because it doesn't really matter much to them already, especially when they produce low-end guitars.

I personally think the RG321MH from the U.S. Ibanez website is the real deal, although I haven't tried that one out before.

And if you throw in some duncan/EMG into the SA160QM, it will BURN. .. Literally. laugh.gif

among all those...
my pick would be the RR3.

also for Ibanez RG with wilkinson bridge loaded with V7 V8.
wilkinson what first? and what happened to the original?

the SA160 is ok, but the designed by EMG pickup is a piece of crap.
its basically the same level as EMG Select...ie. USD20 pickups.

and from your list also...i guess you're confused? since you have a list of fixed and trem guitars there.

LP also can be made into metal...hetfield, trivium, slayer...
and mine tongue.gif

Woah, nice collection.Anyways,I've decided to get the SA160 and dump in some EMGs or SDs.Most probably SDs though.I did consider getting a guitar with FR but with my price range, they'll probably suck.I guess my 4th guitar will be an RR3 or if I have the cash,RR5 or maybe some sorta Razorback.

Hey,
pick RR3 if u gonna metal. LOL
I went to Bentley with RG1570 in mind, but ended up not buying that one bcos the sound is simply not as good as RR3 (pickups big difference).
Whats your budget actually? RGR321EX is ok, i have tested one too but maybe need to change PUPs if u want better sound. However, dont forget amps...get a decent one if possible. hehe

FYI, the SA160 doesn't have 24 frets, just 22. But it's a damn versatile and light guitar......

If you're changing the pickups, might I suggest DiMarzios?
the Evolution are a great pickup for the S series.

BTW, I can't seem to find any information on the SA160 on Ibanez's official website...... mind filling us on the details?

The SA160 is discontinued adi.It features mahogany body,HSS,SAT30 bridge.

DiMarzios are active pups right?I dunno, but I guess EMGs are outta my list. They don't sound as chunka chunka in SS amps.Is that true?

btw, about mahogany.
ie. on that RG321 or SA160.
just cos it has mahogany does not mean its going to sound full.
remember the LP was also one big thick ass slab of mahogany, that helps to give it the tone too...
whereas the ibanez is one thin ass piece of thing that loosely can be called wood tongue.gif

i'm an EMG person, but dimarzio x2n is pretty good for passive. has a ton of punch. or you can try an invader, also passive.
if you wanna give passive emg's a try, go for hz-h4. i'm using them now biggrin.gif

Methinks that you should go either for high-power DiMarzios (Evolution, X2N etc) or active EMGs (81, 85, 89). Stay away from the passive EMGs (no offence, SweetTooth! icon_rolleyes.gif ) if you're looking for that high-output sound.

Well, like Everdying said, the LP sounds like that because it's one big slab of mahogany, whereas the SA is a thin slab.

But with good EQ and good gain I'm sure you can get bone-crushing tone from the SA. (Although maybe in a direct A/B comparison, the LP will most likely sound fuller.)

Personally, I'd take feel over tone too. I think a guitar that's comfortable and nice to play with goes a long way compared to one with "better" tone. Remember, you're not going to get a Gibson LP with to-die-for tone at that price range!

(Ok ok, I admit, I detest the LP! Probably as much as Everdying detests the RG! laugh.gif )

7: Thou shalt not ask ?I like X?s tone, what pickups does he use??.

If you like said player?s tone, getting his amp will get you 95% of the way there. THEN get the pickups, and it should make up the last 5% (if your guitar is made of the same wood). Also, related to this commandment: PLEASE STOP LOOKING AT EMG?S IF YOU HAVE A PRACTICE AMP, THEY?LL ONLY SOUND HOW YOU EXPECT IF YOU HAVE A MESA RECTO, OR SIMILAR ALL-TUBE, DARK-VOICED, HIGH GAIN AMP. If you have such an amp, be my guest, EMG?s can sound huge/awesome/generally pretty darn metal, BUT WITH THE RIGHT AMP. See Commandment #1 and #2.

Copied from ultimate-guitar.True?I think it does provide a little punch though.

True, amps ARE a big part of the sound.
But if you add in EMGs compared to stock, crappy pickups, I'm sure you can tell the difference.

i'm using a SA120, also mahogany body but with H-H setting.

try fooling around with your EQ, effects, and you can get a nice tone out of it...

to me, i'll pick the RG1570...H-S-H + AANJ + prestige FTW!!

i also heard that edge III is not that good. but i just bought a rg350EX and to me i does keep my strings in tune. I know that it will not be as good as an edge pro or an FR but still does the job weel. after restringing (which some people might remember) I experimented on the set up a bit, keeping the exact same streing gauge so that i dont have to change tweak the truss rod, the thing had only neeed to be re-tune once! so i dont know weather all those people saying edge II $uck a$$ without tring it out wouldnt give it its justice. Still, if you have the money, go for an rr3 better pickups.

thinking of swapping mine with dimarzios hehe

Edge-Pro.......
Ibanez exclusively (correct me if I'm wrong) uses their own Edge and ZR Trems.

I have read somewhere (was it the Ibanez forum?) that swapping pickups in an S-body is not as easy and and as pleasure as many would think due to its thin body (less wood).

However, DiMarzio often goes well with Ibanez...generally.

i also heard that edge III is not that good. but i just bought a rg350EX and to me i does keep my strings in tune. Still, if you have the money, go for an rr3 better pickups.

thinking of swapping mine with dimarzios hehe

how long hav u been using it?
u wont b having any problem when it's new, but when it's 2-3, or mebbe 4 years.

unlike lo-pro and edge, they can last for years.

QUOTE(freakfingers12 @ Dec 3 2007, 06:24 PM)

He got his guitar already.
Since it's answered, I'll close this thread.

But freakfingers12, once you get the pictures ready, drop me a PM with the links to the pics and I'll post it up here, but you should also post it in the Show Off Thread.
