it all depends on the sensor. crappy ccd sensor and high MP would only make the image crappy.

panasonic LX2? a 16:9 CCD, but you still can capture 16:9 on a canon, it just crop the picture. but the widescreen lcd on lx2 is sure cool looking.
but you can get a widescreen on sony t70/200.

for a point and shoot. best image quality would be a canon. and get with an IS, image stabilizer
