I'm here to seek help from any Psychology degree seniors from IMU or HELP. I would like to know should I take Human Resource Management as a minor when I'm doing my Psychology degree. If I take a minor, I will not be able to take 4 years joint degree which offer by Flinders and HELP.

Does it make any difference if the degree is accredited by Australia university? Since I think I will not go to Australia, so I think it's not suitable for me. Is the degree which is accredited by Australia better than normal psychology degree? Which one is better? A degree accredited by Australia or a degree with a HR minor.

Btw, IMU or HELP's psychology program is better. I know that everyone says that Help is better but what is its stand out points? Should I consider HELP or IMU since the prices are almost the same if I include transport to HELP. IMU is nearer to my house, on the other hand. Any seniors from IMU and HELP, I would like to know their program structures.

Thank you smile.gif

Added on April 12, 2012, 11:46 pmAnyone from psychology course ?

what are the books tat needed to buy ?

i decide to use that RM200 to buy those ... heeee...
*
If you received the offer letter form HELP, I think they will specify the place and time to gather. Normally is at the main block, lower foyer.

For the book, it is better to buy it when you are studying at HELP cuz it will be cheaper. However, you can buy from the book provider as well (though he said it ill be more expensive if you are not buying it at HELP). You will definitely need

Ciccarelli's and White's textbook >> Psychology (3rd ed) (Not sure whether there is a 4th ed....) which costs RM 100. However, I do not guarantee that they will not change the textbook but most probably, they wouldn't change it.

http://www.pearsoned.co.uk/bookshop/detail...100000000428426

If you want the email of the book provider, do PM me smile.gif And the bookstore is EMO bookstore.... emo emo lolxd

Good luck^^

Hi, I am planning to take up the psychology programme too. But I am still making one final decision whether it is going to be sunway or help. I do know that help is really well known for its psychology programme but is the 3+0 degree recognisable overseas? If I would like to continue my Masters overseas, would they accept my help degree? Also because the degree that sunway offers is from both sunway university and lancaster university in uk, i feel much safer. Can anyone help give opinions? smile.gif
*
There are psychology graduates from HELP who managed to get into UK. I think it will all depends on your CGPA.

If you would like to pursue your studies at Australia, you will need to take the 4-year program offered by HELP partnering with Flinders Unioversity. It is a 4 + 0 program. For your information, Australia will hardly accept 3 years honour degree from Malaysia.

If you want to pursue your studies in US, I would suggest to you take ADTP.

I am not sure about Sunway's Psychology course but HELP's one is quite good so far (I've just finished my first year). You might want to post at Sunway University thread to find out more. If you want to consider more options, IMU is offering Psychology as well smile.gif

All the best ^^

Oh ya, I wanted to ask. Is there anything we would need to prepare before hand like books or will we be told on the day of the orientation? And for the psychology classes do students normally use the tablets during classes to view notes like the samsung one because i have a friend who is in the finance course in help and he said that in his classes, students usually bring their own tablets as it is easier. And if i am taking MQA, where and whom will i have to inform? Thank you
*
QUOTE(yihlingpow @ Aug 18 2012, 12:59 AM)
how about our attire on Orientation Day? Formal or informal?
*
Casual wear will do smile.gif You will get all the information during orientation (including info about MQA). No need to prepare anything hahaXD but do gear up your English (especially essay writing)

You are allowed to bring in anything lolxd unless your lecturer doesn't allow it. Ya, my frens do view their notes using tablet and notebook... but it might give a bad impression to the lecturers cuz he/ she cant really know what are you doing with your tablet.

Btw, don't worry too much smile.gif All the best^^

QUOTE(yihlingpow @ Aug 19 2012, 02:05 AM)
by the way i wanna ask about minor subjs at Help...

is it hard to tackle with the main?

im considering taking Entrepreneur as the minor...
*
Psychology with a minor in Entrepreneurship? You will have to do 11 subjects (including 3 free electives) for Psychology in the first year.

To complete a minor in Entrepreneurship, you will need to do 7 selected electives, 2 in first year, 4 in second year and the last subject in third year.

If you have the Psychology brochure with you, you will notice that there are Free electives under your module. Your electives for your minor will replace the general elective.

If you are doing a minor in Business related subject [eg. Entrepreneurship, you will most probably lose your 1 month plus holiday after your third semester unless you completed the 2 electives before your third semester (which will be a short semester)]

If you haven't completed your MQA subjects during Foundation, you will need to do it at HELP. So, you will probably need to take 2 MQA + 2 elective for minor and 8 Psychology subjects, which gives you a total of 12 subjects.

If you have completed your MQA, you will only need to take 10 first year subjects (I'm not so sure about this, I suggest you to approach the staff for better clarification).

From my experience of taking first year Business subjects, Business subjects are easier to score compare to Psychology subjects. But I'm not sure about second and third year one.

First year Psychology subjects are still ok but I heard from my senior that second and third year is the real game. Most students extend their 3 semesters into 4 (for 2nd and 3rd year) and if you are taking minor, you will be extending your semesters as well (since you need to take extra subjects for minor).

Hope it helps smile.gif

*
Welcome smile.gif So are you planning to take?

At first I planned to take minor in Finance but then I found that I wouldn't be able to handle stresses of not having holiday for 3 years, so I gave up the minor.

Side note: For 2nd and 3rd year, Business department has different academic calendar (when Business holiday starts, Psychology new semester starts and during semester break for Psychology, Business department will be still be having classes), so most probably there will be no holiday if a minor is taken sad.gif

Sorry for giving so many discouraging thoughts. Hope you can make the right decision.

about the holidays i dont really mind...im afraid i couldn't tackle the subjs and ended not doing well on exam...

and about the essay  writing can give me more detail...
*
Haha I also thougt I wouldn't bother about the holiday at first but I was wrong...... It just scared me out when I see that I won't have any break for 3 years.

Erm, if you really put in great effort, you can handle both your major and minor. I know a excellent senior who did good in both major and minor. So, I bet you can handle it if you believe that you can!

Just a side note again, you do know you won't be taking as much psychology subjects as your friend who don't take minor right? Since you will be taking minor subjects for your free electives and yet your friends can take all Psychology subjects for their free electives. However, some actually find that taking subjects from other departments are better smile.gif

QUOTE(mchia @ Aug 21 2012, 05:24 PM)
Hi, i am taking psychology too but i was thinking of taking a minor in either human resource management or public relations. Would it be too difficult for me to handle either one of that together with psychology as my major? And is there a difference between human resource and public relations and which is usually taken by students? Thanks a lot in advance.
*
It really depends on you. If you can handle it during first semester, you might be able to handle it in your 2nd and 3rd year. If you could not handle your minor even during first year, it would be really difficult during 2nd and 3rd year. Many do mentioned Psychology is not easy (You might hear it from Dr Goh before if you attended his talk), so it really depends. You put enough hard work, then you would be able to handle ^^ For my case, I'm concerned about holiday, so I gave up the thought of having minor. As I mentioned, if you take minor from Business department (eg HR), you might not have any holiday for 3 years.

For PR, it is offered by Communication department which I believe it has the same academic calendar as Psychology department, which means you might be having holiday^^ However, to complete a minor in PR, you might need to take 10 subjects which add on a few extra subjects for you (I'm not sure for this, please seek clarification from the staff).

I'm not sure HR or PR is better though.

All the best and hope to see you guys soon ^^

Yes, Psychology in 2nd and 3rd year are the ones that's the real game. You have to learn how to apply, read other materials, not only your text books. That's how others score. By just sticking to your texts, you'd only get B. That's why it's better to study extra harder for your first year to maintain your CGPA high because you can score easier in first year. In case of any Cs in the following years, you'd still have your 1st year CGPA to average it out.
*
However, the honour one is graduating with does not depend on CGPA but HGPA. HGPA does not include first year subjects. HGPA only include certain amount of Psychology subjects from second and third year plus third year thesis 1 and thesis 2.

Have you graduated?

Btw, thank you for the tips smile.gif

Yes, I have graduated just this year. Yes, HGPA is important because it's on your cert but when you aim for a high CGPA, you'd automatically get a high HGPA too. You can get a high HGPA but if your CGPA sucks, it makes not much difference because you would have to have your CGPA written in the resume. Both are important. =D
*
OMG.... CGPA but not HGPA will be written on resume?

So, does it mean you can get 1st class honour with high HGPA and yet a low CGPA? Is CGPA accumulative? Or it is counted for every year?

Thank you smile.gif

Yes, when you attend career guidance 3, you are supposed to prepare a resume and when you see samples, people write their CGPA on the resume. When you attend the career fair in HELP, companies want to know your CGPA, not HGPA.

You see, HGPA only takes (if I'm not mistaken) 5 of your second year psychology subjects and 5 of your third year psychology subjects plus your thesis 1 and 2. But you have more subjects than that per year. If for instance you score A for 5 psych subjects in second and 5 in third year, you will get at least a second upper (HGPA). But what if your other subjects you scored C? It'll seriously pull down your CGPA. Though it is unlikely because results are quite consistent, it doesn't vary from C- to A. It's usually one or two grades different.

CGPA is accumulative across papers from year 1 to 3, not yearly. So, don't think that HGPA is important because it appears on your cert. CGPA is as important as well.

What year are you in now?
*
Thank you so much smile.gif I'm doing my second year first semester now. You working currently?

make sure she is the one teaching you 202. you'll learn a lot with her.
She'll give tips on what to add on and what to write in lab report. Just make sure that you write down every single thing. Especially in the report part. It's really easy quite easy to score her assignments when you give her everything she needs.
though with her, it may be a little harder to score in exams but you know you REALLY earned it.
ESPECIALLY forensic psychology. it's super fun, I tell you. She's an entirely different person in forensics and you'll laugh through her classes because it's so carefree. hahaha!

Thanks for the wish!
