I'll be looking to purchase a new iMac and the only thing that's keeping me from getting one at this point is the lack of stock and the whole Leopard OS issue.

My main question here regarding the Leopard OS is,
- how would I know if the OS has been factory pre-installed or simply installed by the distributor upon arrival?

As for as I know, the current batch of iMac's do not have Leopard pre-installed but distributors are offering to install it for you with the CD provided by Apple. Based on past experience, I would prefer to get one that has the OS factory pre-installed but I wouldn't know how to check if it was done that way.

Would appreciate it if anyone would mind to explain to me on how I could verify this. Thanks! notworthy.gif

not much of an expert but I would say the iMacs (and other macs) shipped with Leopard will have the leopard desktop background on the computer on the packaging box.

according to the distributors the macbook & macbook pro's are already factory pre-installed with the leopard OS.

as for the imac, stock might arrive in time for the PC fair. smile.gif

new iMacs bought from October 1st is eligible for leopard upgrade if i am not wrong with a fee of course...but i believe all the iMacs now should be leopard pre-installed...

the way to differentiate a pre-installed system is... when you first boot up a pre-installed system it will ask you for the language selection for the system... if it is installed from a media, the language selection is done at the first screen of the bootup from the installer... that is if my memory serves me right and this is based on tiger and panther...

if they installed from those retail version... you might not have some applications like iWork (needs to purchase anyway) and the full iLife 08...not to mention photobooth and the media centre like application (forgot what it is named)

anyways.. i prefer to re-install the system again anyways for my own specific personal reasons... and also the whole load of applications that might not be used is installed with the pre-installed OS... i can save about 10gigs by not installing stuff like garageband, jingles and themes for iDVD and many other small applications that might contribute to space wastage... and not to mention language files, printer definitions, office 2004 test drive, filemaker, omnioutliner and a whole load of other stuff...

Bought a new iMac yesterday (yipee!!!) and it is pre-installed with Tiger. I agree with ButtHead. I would rather install it myself and save myself like 7 Gigs by not installing any printer drivers and languages that I don't need. (I don't print anything btw, purely video/audio workstation)

While you are on Leopard install page, lookout for the CUSTOMIZE button. You should be able to uncheck the languages pack and the printer drivers.

If you have install Leopard I think you can use this software called MONOLINGUAL to remove the language packs. Not sure if it is compatible with Leopard yet but you can try. Just read the manual very cafefully. My friend system crashed when he 'tercheck' on of the English packs.

i think you should still be able to launch the installer from the OS itself...from the installer media... then you can choose to uninstall or install additional applications...i might be wrong about the removal part... additional part i am quite sure...

and you can also check on \Library\Receipts

for residues left behind...it could take up some space if you are ultra space conscious...

i think English option is not available right...at least if your language is English...

hehe... just give it a try lar... belum cuba belum tahu... you rather screw it up now when it is new than when you have 100's of gigs of files stacked up in your HDD... worst come to worst is just give it a fresh re-installation...
