the memory readout on unix is kinda deceptive to most ppl.

to get the actual ram that's used by your applications or daemons, you'll need to:

ram used - buffers - cached

which is just 298mb in your case, not the full 918mb that u see

good thing about linux is that, it will not waste any unused RAM. Most of the leftover memory are used in buffers and cache. This will speed up the system instead of wasting time doing swaps to secondary memory. Only recently that vista is trying to do something like this.

Speaking of which, my Xorg takes up 2.3GB RES and 4.3GB VIRT after a few hours using firefox 3 beta sad.gif I have a feeling it's due to a hack that I applied to the full-page zoom, and also due to the nvidia X server leaking.

It seems like you’re looking for specific steps to reduce memory usage in your openSUSE 10.3 KDE environment. Here are some detailed actions you can take:

1. Use Lightweight Applications: Replace memory-intensive applications with lighter alternatives. For example, you can use Chromium or Firefox ESR for browsing instead of the full version of Firefox.
2. Disable or Remove Unnecessary Services: Review the services running on your system and disable or uninstall those you don’t need. Use the YaST tool or command-line utilities like systemctl to manage services.
3. Optimize KDE Settings:
• Desktop Effects: Go to System Settings > Display and Monitor > Compositor. Disable or reduce the intensity of desktop effects.
• Window Management: Go to System Settings > Window Management. Adjust animations and behavior to reduce resource usage.
4. Reduce Autostart Applications: Go to System Settings > Startup and Shutdown > Autostart. Disable unnecessary applications from starting with the system.
5. Monitor Widgets: Remove or minimize the use of resource-intensive widgets on your desktop.
6. Adjust Power Management: Configure power-saving settings to optimize resource usage when the system is idle.
7. Clean Up Temporary Files: Regularly clean up temporary files using the tmpwatch or tmpreaper utilities.
8. Upgrade KDE: If possible, consider upgrading KDE to a newer version. Newer releases often come with performance improvements and memory optimizations.
9. Switch to a Lightweight Desktop Environment: If reducing memory usage is a primary concern, you might consider switching to a lightweight desktop environment like XFCE or LXQt.
10. Consider Upgrading openSUSE: openSUSE 10.3 is quite outdated, and newer releases have likely improved memory management. Upgrading to a supported version of openSUSE is recommended.
11. Add More RAM: If your hardware allows, increasing the amount of RAM in your system can have a significant impact on overall performance and memory usage.
