M3A-H/HDMI won't be good.

M3N-HT DELUXE will be, and also Crosshair 2 lol.

The cheap choices (790FX MSI/DFI), you HAVE to use a 9850's unlocked multi to bypass the 233Mhz HTT limit.

hi guys, any good mobo recommendation for phenom X4 latest stepping? I've always inclined towards ASUS but would be good to hear opinions about other good MOBOs too. Anyway, what's the best mobo for phenom X4 in ur opinion?
*
790FX- not Asus
780a- Asus

780G- forget it.
770- lawls.

He asked for the "best", not something that *suited* him. wink.gif

And really, 780Gs can handle X2s and X3s, but get overpowered by the decent X4 processors.

Quad Core Showdown: AMD Phenom X4 9850 vs. Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2282395,00.asp
user posted image

The Core 2 Quad Q9300 is an interesting beast, as it only has half the L2 cache per die of the more expensive quad core CPUs in Intel's product line. For example, the Core 2 Quad Q9450, clocked at 2.66GHz, has 6MB of L2 cache per die, or 12MB total. But the Q9450 also costs about $80 more, so the Q9300 is aimed at a more budget-minded audience who might desire quad-core performance.

Of course, AMD's Phenom X4 9850 Black Edition is even more affordable, at $235, give or take a few dollars. The X4 9850 is a 125W TDP part, while the Q9300 is a 95W TDP processor, and both seem to be fairly overclockable, though the edge in overclockability most likely lies with the Intel CPU—that 45nm high K plus metal gate technology has been quite the boon for overclockers.

That's pathetic. Using DDR3 for Intel while AMD gets lame DDR2-800 (Off spec DDR-1111, I'm sure it doesn't run on 1066 without config).

Of course I'm not surprised. Extremetech gave the Prescott Pentium 4 an 8, while the Extreme Edition got a 9. laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

The Phenom's 4th core leaks a lot- see the 3-core vs 4-core power usage figures.

But I'm used to high power usage stuff already. I just use less air conditioning when I sleep, and it's even (take that suckas!)

Hmm... 9950 seems to be a better chip (mature stuff it seems) as every review I've seen says it can get to 3Ghz stable (with stock volts it seems)

3.2Ghz-3.4Ghz is a risky bet, but when the new SB750 + 790FX/GX motherboards come out, I think the Phenoms will hit it. At 3.4 you better WC it though.

Oh, and if you're wondering, your 6400+ handles games JUST fine. Get a Rad 4850- 50% performance increase, spend much less than a Phenom. wink.gif

another noob question:
given the high TDP of those higher end phenom procs, can those mainstream mobo support those procs? e.g. ASUS M3A
*
M3A hell no.

Right now, Thundermatch's only selling the MSI 790FX mobo at RM500, it's quite worth it if you just want a stable system without OC.

However, if you can wait, 790GX is going to pop up soon. It's like AMD's P45- easier and better (also more stable) overclocks, able to do Crossfire, and also should be cheaper than most 790FX boards. 790GX is slated to start from RM400.

man, i knew it's way too early to purchase the mobo with SB600 on it... sad.gif

yea, it can't oc phenom well enuff n my target for phenom if oc'ing is around 3.4 - 3.5GHz. yea, u're quite rite guys, my current 6400+ is damn powerful enuff for games d imo. the only thing that's making the system slower is my gc now. instead of buying 4850, i'll jz cf my 3870 with another 1,lol  laugh.gif

Not worth the extra power. laugh.gif
Try to target elegance, 4850 is a better buy I have to say.

Oh, and good things come for those who wait:

About the same as 8800GTS 512/9800GTX.

Only ~15W higher than a 3870, still very cool.

Mmm... I don't think so.

Current 790FX chipsets are VERY picky. Either you get a 780a, or you wait a while and see the new 790GX chipsets that should be able to get you to 2.8->3.0.

Phenom 9950 popped up on Thundermatch's pricelist, RM775, grossly overpriced.

If you're getting a 790GX, no point getting the 9950.

At max OC your difference will be really small, ~100Mhz max.

But if you want 9850 BEs, get them now. Future versions will not be black.

the 9950 not BE version? i tot suppose to have BE.. correct me if im wrong.

The 9950 will always be black.

I stand corrected on the 9950- it OCs a LOT better, with ACC it is very near a Q6600. It is definitely better than those "landmine" Q6600 G0s that are increasingly common.
